Chapter 45

Luther
I was working with my dad on Alpha training while Lexi was in class. I would rather be anywhere but here today. Don’t get me wrong and I look forward to becoming the next Alpha. Though my dad is leaving behind some big shoes to fill, I will do my best to make him proud and to serve my pack the best I can. With Lexi at my side I know I can. But I had know idea how much paperwork dad had to do. There was paperwork for people asking for permission for their mates to join our pack. And some that just wanted to transfer packs. There was paperwork for the school and pack hospital for more supplies or equipment.

Then there are reports from the warriors about training. Who was ready to move up and who needed more training. And now there was an extra report for those that wanted to participate in special training to be guards for Lexi when she takes over as Luna. They were training with the elder about Lexi’s powers. And they amped up their regular training. They are even learning about different ways to defeat vampires. I asked dad when he started this and he told me he didn’t. When a few of our top warriors heard about Lexi they came to dad with a proposal to start this. “ I swear all of our top warriors are on the list. And there is even a waiting list. It has gotten all of our warriors in training to work harder hoping for a slot.” dad said.

I was amazed at how our pack was going to extra lengths for Lexi and no one was asked to do it. They are doing it themselves. After we go over maintenance reports and approve repairs that are needed I point to a pile we haven’t gone through yet. “ What are those?” I asked. “ That is your mother’s pile. Your mom is in charge of the pack house. As well as all the she-wolves and children in the pack. She makes sure the house runs as smoothly as it does. She ensures every member of this house and pack have what they need. From the college kids needing extra money for books to the kitchen staff having everything they need to provide us with meals.” Dad said.

Dad picks up a small pack “ This one is the budget and invasion list for Lexi’s birthday. She wants me to over it in case she missed anyone.” “ What kind of party did mom decide to do?” I asked. I know Lexi was hoping to keep it small. “ A casual ball is what she is calling it. Dressing up nice. That reminds me you need to make sure your suit is ready.” dad said. “ And Lexi is okay with this?” I asked. I know Lexi said my mom could do what she wanted but mom gave Lexi final approval. “ From what I understand, yes. She thought it would be fun to get a little dressed up. Your mom told me that when Lexi heard about how many of our pack that hadn’t found mates she became worried and thought inviting all the packs might help fix that.” dad said.

I smile “ Dad, you know Lexi might be right. We never interact with other packs. And they may be having the same problem. Some of our members may have mates in other packs and didn’t know it.” Dad nods “ Son you have yourself a fine Luna. And your mother agrees. She adores Lexi more and more everyday. She has even decided instead of completely retiring when you take over she is going to stay on for a little while to help Lexi transition. She said Lexi has too much going on right now your mom doesn’t want her to worry about Luna training.” I have an awesome mom.

I’m about to ask another question when dad gets a mindlink. “ It appears we have a visitor.” dad said. He stands up from his leather chair and walks around his maple desk. I get up and follow him. We leave his office and head to the living room where one of the guards has our visitor. I wonder who it could be. Neither one of us was expecting anyone. When we get there I see Aiden sitting on a chair. “ Young Alpha, how can we help you today?” dad asks. Aiden stands and bows showing respect to my dad. “ Alpha, sorry for intruding. I was hoping to talk with Luther for a few minutes.” Aiden said. He looked at me “ I would have called but I don’t have your number.”

That explains why he just stopped by but what does he want? “ Is Lexi alright?” I asked, my first thought going to my mate. Freya is on campus but can’t go in the classroom with Lexi. I know Jesse has some classes with her. “ Jesse checked in twenty minutes ago just before going into Standish’s class. He said she was fine.” he said. That makes me breath easier. “ I wanted to talk to you since we have a mate in common. You know I’m doing my best to keep her from accepting the rejection.” he said. I nod for him to continue. “ I think another way for me to do that is if she sees we are trying to get along. I’m not saying we have to be best friends. I have one of those. I thought we should at least get to know each other. So I would like to invite you to have a drink with me. I also want to see if you would be willing to take Lexi on a date with me.” Aiden said.

Aiden turns to dad “ I would also like your permission to observe and join in Lexi’s training. I want to help in any way I can.” After what I heard when Aiden took Lexi out the other night none of this surprises me. I can see he is genuinely trying for Lexi so I’ll give him a chance. “ I’ll take you up on the beer and date with Lexi. But I want to make myself clear. I’m only agreeing to this for Lexi. Otherwise I have no desire to get to know you. Not after how you treated her.” I told him. “ I did expect otherwise. But thank you.” Aiden replied. “ Since you are Lexi’s mate and are trying to do the right thing I have no objection to you being here for her training.” Dad said.

Aiden is about to say something else when his eyes glaze over. I see his face change and know something is wrong. I can feel it. “ Mate.” Diesel whines. I can’t say anything because I get linked. “ Luther, we are headed your way. Lexi collapsed.” Freya says. “ What? Who is we?” I asked. “ Jesse was with her in class. He yelled for me. He said they were talking to Standish and she just went down. I have already alerted the doctor.” She said. “ I’ll meet you. How far out are you?” I asked. “ Ten minutes tops. I’m driving.” Freya said. I normally don’t like it when she drives because she had a lead foot but now I’m grateful.

I didn’t notice my dad had been linked as well. Aiden looks at me “ Let’s go.” I said. We take off out of the back of the pack house with my dad directly behind me. When we get to the hospital I see our pack doctor standing out front with a nurse and a gurney waiting. We are all looking in the direction Freya would be coming. Diesel was whimpering in my head worried about Lexi. “ We will make sure she is taken care of, buddy.” I told him. I look over at Aiden and it looks like he is trying to keep Razor from taking control. My dad is watching both of us in case he needs to intervene. He could command our wolves to stand down.

In the distance I see a cloud of dust. It takes less than a minute and Freya is almost in front of us turning her jeep to the side so we have access to the passenger doors. The rear passenger door flies open and I see Jesse scooting out with an unconscious Lexi in his arms. Aiden and I ran up to him at the same time. Jesse ignores both of us, runs past us and places Lexi on the gurney. I wanted to grab Jesse and knock the shit out of him for disrespecting me like he just did. But I could see his first priority was Lexi. He is her Goddess appointed guardian. He was doing his job. So I let it go.

Once Lexi was on the gurney the doctor took off inside with all of us following. The doctor was asking Jesse questions as he raced Lexi down the hall. “ How long has she been out?” Doc asked “ Twenty five minutes.” Jesse said. “ Did she ever stop breathing?” “ No.” We got to the exam room and the doctor didn't even bother moving Lexi to another bed. He just moved the bed up to the wall and began his examination. “ Young man, I need to know exactly what happened just before she went unconscious.” doc said.
