Chapter 16
Luther
I was a little disappointed when Lexi first turned me down for a date. But when she explained why and she wouldn’t blow her school work for me I was proud of her decision. She was holding on to what is important to her and wouldn’t put it off. And I was pleased when she said she would go out with me the next day. When she walked away to check on her other customers I turned to my friends. Keeping my voice low so Lexi couldn’t hear us, I asked “ So what do you guys think?” I brought them here to meet Lexi and find out a little more about her. I told them about meeting her and our interaction.
Scott answers first “ She is more than human. I can feel it. So can Damon. Damon says he can sense a little bit of wolf in her but it is like it is asleep or something. We both feel protective though.” Freya speaks up next. “ I feel protective too. And those eyes. I thought you two were exaggerating. But wow. I feel bad for her. You could tell by the way she reacted Lexi is used to having to hide them. It is a shame. They are so pretty.” Freya turns her head like she just thought of something. “ And relaxing. I felt calm when Lexi looked at me and her eyes were glowing.” I know what she is talking about. I felt it too when I first met her.
I look over my shoulder when I hear her laugh and see she is talking and smiling with Patsy. Lexi smiling makes me smile. “ She really is your mate, isn’t she?” Scott asks. I turned to him, “ Yea, she is.” “ So what are you going to do about it?” Scott asked. “ What do you mean what am I going to do about it? I’m going to accept her. I don’t care if she is human. Or mostly human. The Goddess gave Lexi to me so she has to be a good match.” I said getting angry Scott would even question me.
Scott smirks “ Good man. And I give you my word I will protect my future Luna.” “ We may have a problem?” Dean said. I looked over to where he was pointing. There was a guy walking up to Lexi and he was definitely a wolf. I could feel it. I turned my ear to listen to them. I didn’t like spying on Lexi but I needed to know what I was up against. “ Hey, Jesse I’m almost done. Why don’t you grab a back booth and I grab my books in a minute.” Lexi said. “ Sure.” the guy, Jesse said. “ Jesse, Lexi eats before studying. She thinks she can fool me but an apple is not lunch.” Patsy says. I have to hold back a laugh at how Pasty is mothering her. Jesse salutes Pasty “ Yes ma’am.” before going to the back booth.
Lexi makes a few rounds before she comes over to us. “ Here guys. I’m done for the night but wanted to give you your check before I go.” she said. I reach into my pocket and pull out my wallet. “ Let me give you your tip then.” I said. Lexi shakes her head “ No that’s alright. Leave it for the next girl. It will start her night off on the right foot.” All I can think is Lexi is perfect.I feel a wolf presence and see that Jesse guy beside Lexi. I don’t like it but hold back a growl because he is her study partner.
“ Everything ok, Lexi.” Jesse asks. “ Just fine. Dropping their check off. I’ll be done in a minute.” Lexi answered. Jesse puts his arm on Lexi's shoulder. Diesel was pissed at this wolf touching his mate. He growled as I got up. Jesse growled back. My friends got up ready to defend me and their Luna. In the blink of an eye Lexi was between Jesse and I. How did she get there so fast? She had a hand on our chests. Lexi’s eyes glow and I feel heat from her hand. Not burning, just warm.
Lexi whispers “ I don’t know what is wrong with both of you, but you will stop this instant.” Lexi’s eyes glow brighter as she turns to Jesse. I see his eyes go wide in shock. “ Jesse, it is nice you want to protect me. Thank you. But you will not harm my new friends. Do you understand?” Lexi said. Her voice was full of authority but she never raised her voice. She didn’t have to. Jesse is shocked when he bows his head. You can see it in his face.
Lexi turns to me with a sweet smile that could make the hardest heart melt. “ Luther, Jesse is a friend and study partner. He is just checking on me. There is no need to start anything.” Lexi rubs a small circle on my chest and I feel Diesel purr. He is already whipped. I’m not far from it myself. “ Please Luther, just relax and finish your dinner. I’m fine.” Lex says. And just like that I'm calmer. I pulled her hand off my chest, brought it to my lips and kissed the top of her hand. “ Of course, Lexi. Forgive me?” I asked. Lexi squeezes my hand and says “ Of course.”
Lexi turns to my pack mates next “ Thank you for wanting to step up and help Luther in protecting me. While it is not necessary I am thankful you have Luther’s back.” I watched all them bow their heads at Lexi even though there was no power behind her words. She didn;t force them to bow, they just did it. Or their wolves did. I watch Lexi’s eyes slowly go back to normal. “ I need to study. Have a good night. And Luther, I look forward to your call.” Lexi said.
She walks away and we slump in our chairs. “ What the hell was that? How did Lexi do that?” Freya asked first. “ I have no idea. We need to talk to the Elders and do some research. But I do know one thing. My mate is awesome.” I said, making them laugh. Research is definitely needed. There is a lot more to Lexi than even she may know.
