Chapter 68
Ryan
I am Ryan McCallister. I’m twenty five and the Alpha of the Iron River pack. I know it is young to be an Alpha but my dad wanted to retire to spend quality time with my mom. I had proven myself to my dad and he felt comfortable handing over the pack to me despite the fact I don’t have a mate. Well, I did. I met her when I was eighteen. But she rejected me because she was in love with someone else. I wanted to be mad that she was going against the Goddess but I could. I respected her choice and accepted the rejection with hope I would be given a second chance mate. So far it hasn’t happened but I still have hope that she is out there. Until then I focus on running my pack.
I’m meeting with the Alpha of Riverclaw to discuss some odd things that we have been noticing at our pack. I brought my beta Tyler and one of my Gamma’s Isabelle. We are taken to the Alpha's office by the future Beta Scott. My wolf Stone has been bouncing in my head like a puppy since we got on the pack’s land. I could even feel the change in energy when we crossed. But I don't know what it is. It doesn’t feel threatening. “ Stone, what is going on with you?” I asked him. “ I don’t know yet. I’m just happy. I feel like something is going to happen. A good thing.” he told me.
Just before we get to the Alpha’s office I look over at my Beta and Gamma. I see they are talking to their wolves as well. “ Is something wrong?” I link them. “ Crimson, is suddenly jumpy. He says something is going to happen.” Tyler said. Isabelle said “ So does Delilah. She says she feels the need to protect.” “ Let’s get through this meeting then we will figure it out.” I said as the door opened.
Alpha Riverclaw stands from his desk holding out his hand “ Alpha McCallister, welcome.” I shake his hand “ Thank you for agreeing to this meeting.” Alpha Riverclaw waves his hand like it is no big deal. When it actually is. None of the packs that I know of have ever interacted with each other. As long as the packs don’t cause problems we leave each other alone. “ This is my son and future Alpha Luther and you have met his Beta.” Alpha Riverclaw said. We shook hands and Alpha invited us to sit down. “ So what can I do for you?” Alpha asked.
“ Well, I came to see if you were having any problems recently.” I said. I explained to Alpha about the wild wolves we have seen in our area. Normally, that isn’t a big deal but these wolves had bright red eyes, were in bad shape and the oddest part was they seemed to be looking for something. They would sniff around then move on. Alpha Riverclaw and his son looked at each other. Luther nodded and Alpha said “ I’m sorry you are having these problems. We hadn’t realized it was affecting other packs. The wolves won’t harm your pack. They have a spell on them and they are looking for something. Since you don’t have it they will move on.” “ So you know what is going on? And you are sure they will move on?” I asked. The wolves have moved on, or at least the first set did but we are seeing more of them.
“ Dad, tell him. They have a right to know.” Luther said. What is going on? I look over at my Beta to see if he is picking up something but I see him staring out the window behind the Alpha’s desk. Alpha looks over at Tyler “ Something wrong Beta?” Tyler doesn’t take his eyes off the window “ Excuse me Alpha but I could have sworn I saw a glowing light outside your window.” I expected the Alpha to brush it off or think Tyler was losing it but he asked “ What color was it?” Tyler didn’t miss a beat “ Light blue.” Alpha turns to the window and so do I just as a flash of light blue happens. What the hell? Stone steps and looks “ That is cool.” Luther just smiles like he is used to seeing. Alpha shakes his head and laughs “ Someone is happy.” The light means someone is happy?
Alpha turns back to us. “ What do you know about the Prophecy Child?” he asks. What does that have to do with anything? “ It is a myth.” Isabelle said. We have all grown up with stories from the Elders about the Goddess prophecy. Some great being that will unite the packs to bring down Valerose. But no one has seen or heard of this being. “ That is where you are wrong, miss. But I think it would be better if we showed you.” Alpha said. “ If you will follow me,” he said. Stone steps forward “ Yes, follow the Alpha. We need to see this.” I am curious myself but now that Stone is urging me I really want to see.
My Beta and Gamma follow me as Alpha, Beta and Luther lead us down the stairs and out the back of the packhouse to a field. I saw four people standing around. I saw a woman glowing light blue. She pulled her arms back and pushed forward. I saw the glow leave her hands and go into a guy about my age. He didn’t look hurt. But what the fuck was that? “ Get closer to girl.” Stone urged. I felt drawn to her as well. “ Lexi, try again.” I heard the older man say. The glowing girl did again just as we were about to approach them.
Suddenly laughter broke out. All of them were laughing except the guy she hit with the light. “ Come on, Lexi. Did you have to do that?” the guy grumbles, crossing his arms over his chest. The girl that is glowing is laughing so hard she is bent over holding her stomach. It is a musical sound that is pleasant to my ears. Stone stands up in my head “ I could listen to that sound all day.” Since when is he so sappy? “ I’m sorry,Dean.” she gasps. “ I didn’t mean to do that.” she gasps again between bursts of laughter. The other girl there is on the ground laughing “ That was fucking funny.” she gasps.
I have no idea what is going on but the glowing girl's laughter is infectious. I’m trying to hold it in though. I see my Beta and Gamma are trying as well. Luther on the other hand isn’t holding back at all laughing his ass off. “ Lexi, show us how happy you are.” the older man said. The glowing girl, Lexi, raises her hands in the air and sends three short blasts up. Then she aims at the guy again. “ Oh, no you don’t.” he says and ducks just in time. Problem is the blast hits Beta Scott. He starts to purr. Lexi looks over at Scott and begins another laughing fit.
I can’t stop the smile that forms. Alpha walks up to Lexi and pulls her into a hug. “ I see my girl is having fun,” he says. She smiles up at him and I swear the sun gets brighter. The wind shifts and my nose is filled with the intoxicating scent of warm sugar cookies. I sniff around trying to find the source and it leads to the girl in Alpha’s arms. I hold back a growl. This pack is larger than mine and I don’t need a war. The fact that he is looking at her like she is a child and not lust helps. “ Oh, you have guests. I’m sorry Evan. I didn’t know.” the girl says. She didn’t address him as Alpha and he isn’t upset or offended by it. That’s odd.
“ No worries.” Alpha said. He brings Lexi over to us and the smell gets stronger. It is definitely coming from Lexi. Stone goes berserk when she is in front of us. “ Mate. Mate.Mate.” he shouts in my head. This enchanting beauty with fiery red hair is our second chance mate. “ Lexi, dear. I want you to meet Alpha Ryan, his Beta Tyler and Gamma Isabelle. They are from the Iron River pack.” Lexi looks me over and that is when I notice her eyes are glowing too. But she isn’t responding to the mate bond. Why not? Lexi holds out her hand for me to shake it. I grab it and kiss the top. I feel the sparks instantly and they are powerful. My entire body feels like it is being lit up in a good way. I know Lexi can feel it too because her eyes get big. “ Mate.” Stone growls out getting past me. Alpha chuckles “ Alpha Ryan meet your mate, Lexi. The Prophecy child. And the reason you have been seeing those odd wild wolves.”
