Chapter 534 The Truth About the Donation

Leonard's face lit up with a huge smile the moment he saw Paxon.

He bent down, scooped Paxon up, kissed his cheek, and said with a grin, "Missed you too, buddy."

Paxon immediately pointed to Orla, who had followed them, and said, "Uncle Leonard, this is Orla. She's starting college here all by herself, so you gotta look out for her."

Leonard glanced over at Orla as she walked towards them.

Orla was rocking trendy jeans and a simple white t-shirt, her hair pulled back in a ponytail.

She looked young and full of energy.

Sebastian brought Orla over and said in a serious tone, "She's your responsibility now. Tomorrow, take her to handle the enrollment stuff. Tyler will come to see her in a few days."

Leonard's lips curved into a smile. "It's been two years, and you've grown up. No more tears, huh?"

He ruffled Orla's hair.

He clearly remembered the first time he met Orla; it was a rainy day.

Back then, Leonard hadn't yet reunited with the Winters family.

On his way home from work, he saw her crouching alone in the rain, crying.

She looked so pitiful that Leonard couldn't help but stop.

He asked her for a long time, but she wouldn't speak, just kept crying.

Leonard had no choice but to take her home.

Later, he found out that Orla was Tyler's niece, and she was crying because she had seen the kidnapper who had taken them years ago, bringing back memories of her parents' tragic death.

Using the clues she provided, Leonard caught the criminal who had been on the run for years.

It was a comfort to her deceased parents.

Recalling these memories, Leonard's eyes showed a hint of elder care for the younger generation.

Orla looked up at him, her bright eyes sparkling with intelligence.

She softly called out, "Uncle Leonard, please take care of me."

Leonard responded with a smile, "Of course, I'll look out for you. No one's gonna mess with you. Let's head home."

He led the group out of the airport.

Just then, Sebastian's phone rang.

Seeing the caller ID, he immediately answered, "Theodore, what's up?"

Theodore's voice was hoarse with fatigue, "Sebastian, are you here yet?"

"Just got off the plane. Is Mr. Vale not doing well?"

"My dad fell down the stairs last time, and there's been bleeding in his brain. Yesterday, he fell in the bathroom again, and he's still unconscious. I want you to bring Paxon to see him."

Hearing this, Sebastian frowned. "Give me the address, I'll bring Paxon over right away."

Sebastian received the address and headed straight to the hospital with Paxon.

In the hospital room, seeing the unconscious Darren, Sebastian felt worried, "What's wrong with Mr. Vale's eyes?"

Theodore shook his head, "I don't know. The housekeeper said it was a car accident, and his retina detached. They didn't tell me at the time. When I saw him again, he was already like this."

"Retina detachment? Didn't you take him for a check-up?"

"I suggested it, but my dad insisted on not going, saying it couldn't be cured."

Sebastian felt something was off.

A car accident without informing his closest family, and blindness without anyone knowing.

Was it that he didn't want to tell, or was he hiding something?

Thinking of this, an unbelievable idea suddenly flashed in Sebastian's mind.

With this thought, his heart felt like it had been hit.

Sebastian couldn't help but mutter under his breath, "It can't be."

Theodore immediately asked, "What's wrong? Is there something odd?"

Sebastian looked at him with a complex expression, "Where's the housekeeper? I need to ask him something."

The housekeeper was called over by Theodore.

Sebastian stared into his eyes and asked, "Housekeeper, tell me honestly, what's really wrong with Mr. Vale's eyes?"

The housekeeper hesitated for a long time before saying, "It was a car accident that caused the retina detachment, and Mr. Vale didn't want to treat it."

"When did the accident happen? Where was it? Who was involved? Did you pursue it? Can you tell me?"

The housekeeper was stunned by Sebastian's barrage of questions.

Seeing his hesitation, Sebastian's mind became clear.

He couldn't help but clench his fists.

Sebastian's voice came out low and hoarse, "So it wasn't a car accident that caused the retina detachment, but he donated his corneas to me, right?"

This statement shocked not only the housekeeper but also Theodore, who looked at him in disbelief.

"What did you say?"

Sebastian's eyes were filled with complex emotions, "I've been searching for the donor for a long time, but couldn't find any information. On the day of my surgery, I distinctly felt someone standing by my side, watching me.

Thinking back now, that person must have been Darren. He donated his corneas to me."

Hearing this, Theodore immediately turned to the housekeeper, "Is this true?"

The housekeeper's eyes filled with tears, "Mr. Vale didn't want anyone to know. He didn't want Ms. Blackwood to forgive him out of gratitude. He just didn't want Mr. Winters to be blind, and for Ms. Blackwood's newly found happiness to be disrupted again.

Mr. Winters, Mr. Vale truly repented. He lives with guilt every day. He even learned to pray, asking God to forgive his sins and protect you all."

Confirming this, Sebastian felt an indescribable pain.

A normal donor usually has some defect and is at the end of their life.

But Darren was a living person.

He still had decades ahead of him.

Yet, to prevent Sebastian from living in darkness and to ensure Joyce wouldn't have a blind husband, he donated his corneas.

Plunging his own life into darkness.

Sebastian's eyes reddened as he looked at the unconscious Darren, his voice hoarse, "Mr. Vale, why did you do this? How am I supposed to bear this?"

Hearing his voice, Darren slowly opened his eyes.

When he realized Sebastian and Paxon were by his side, tears slipped from Darren's eyes.

His voice was hoarse, "Paxon, can you call me Grandpa?"
