Chapter 585 Paxon
After about ten minutes, Theodore pushed open the door.
He saw Wilhelmina with blood streaming down her forehead, using a towel to wipe it off in front of the mirror.
The room was a mess, as if a fight had just taken place.
Kaia stood beside Wilhelmina, tears in her eyes as she looked at her.
The pitiful scene of mother and daughter made Theodore's heart ache.
He immediately walked over, hugged Kaia, and looked at Wilhelmina, asking, "What happened? Who did this to you?"
Wilhelmina was a bit surprised. "Mr. Vale, why are you here?"
"I'm asking you, who did this?"
Wilhelmina's eyes lowered for a moment, then she said, "My dad."
"Why did he hit you?"
"He lost money gambling and came to me for money. I didn't give it to him, so he tried to take Kaia to pay off his debt. I wouldn't let him, and we fought."
Hearing this, Theodore's brow furrowed deeply.
What kind of father would try to use his own granddaughter to pay off a debt?
He was nothing short of a monster.
Theodore glanced at the wound on Wilhelmina's forehead and asked, "Do you have any medicine at home?"
"Yes, I'll get it."
Wilhelmina took out a first aid kit from the cabinet, finding a bottle of antiseptic and some ointment.
Just as she was about to apply it herself, Theodore suddenly took the items from her.
He carefully opened the antiseptic, dipped a cotton swab in it, and applied it to the wound.
The cold sensation and strong sting made Wilhelmina gasp.
Theodore looked at her coldly. "Does it hurt?"
Wilhelmina nodded. "A little."
"Well, bear with it. You had such poor judgment back then, choosing such a loser, quitting a good job to marry him. If you had stayed working for me, you wouldn't be in this situation now."
He could see that Wilhelmina wasn't doing well.
A woman raising a child alone, with a greedy father.
It was clear how tough her life had been.
Hearing his words, Wilhelmina's heart suddenly felt sour, tears welling up in her eyes.
She didn't dare look into Theodore's eyes, afraid she wouldn't be able to control herself.
She lowered her gaze, her lips curling bitterly. "I can't predict the future. How was I supposed to know I'd choose the wrong person?"
Theodore applied some ointment and then placed a bandage on her wound.
His dark eyes glanced at her coldly. "What about that man? Does he not care about his own child?"
Wilhelmina smiled slightly. "My daughter, I'll raise her myself."
Theodore frowned. "Where are you working now? If you need a place, you can come work for me."
"No need, I'm a secretary at a private company. The boss is nice, and the pay is good. Thank you for your concern, Mr. Vale. It's getting late, please go home."
Theodore looked at her, sensing her distant attitude, and didn't say more.
This was her family matter, and he was an outsider.
He bent down, pinched Kaia's cheek, and said softly, "I'm leaving now. Call me if you need anything."
As he was about to leave, Kaia's big eyes blinked, and she asked, "Mr. Vale, can I kiss you? To thank you for helping my mom."
Hearing this, Wilhelmina immediately stopped her. "Kaia, don't be silly."
She knew Theodore was a germaphobe and wouldn't have close contact with others.
But Theodore ignored her words and pointed to his cheek. "You can kiss here."
Kaia immediately hugged his neck and kissed his cheek.
A warm feeling suddenly passed through Theodore's heart.
Why didn't he feel repulsed by Kaia?
It was like he felt with Paxon.
Was it sympathy for her not having a father, or something else?
Theodore stared at Kaia's cute face and, almost instinctively, kissed her cheek back.
Then he smiled and said, "Returning the favor."
Kaia excitedly grinned, hugging his neck. "Mr. Vale, think about what I said. I can do all sorts of things, like massage your back when you're tired, make instant noodles when you're hungry, and get you water when you're thirsty.
Don't worry, even if you get old and can't move, I won't pull your oxygen tube."
Kaia spoke seriously, her little mouth moving, her voice soft and girlish.
It melted Theodore's heart.
For a moment, he thought her proposal wasn't bad.
He smiled and said, "Seems like you're better than Paxon. When I don't buy him toys, he says he'll pull my oxygen tube when I'm old."
Kaia looked at him seriously. "So you should consider me."
Wilhelmina immediately picked Kaia up, patting her little butt. "Mr. Vale has things to do; don't bother him anymore."
Kaia, though reluctant, nodded obediently. "Goodbye, Mr. Vale."
Theodore ruffled Kaia's hair a few times and looked at Wilhelmina. "If you need help, call me."
"Okay, thank you, Mr. Vale."
Watching his departing figure, Wilhelmina pinched Kaia's cheek and asked, "What did you say to him?"
Kaia's big eyes widened, and she said seriously, "I'm finding you a husband. Paxon promised me that if I let him help me with my milk bath, he'd introduce his uncle to you.
Mom, I think Mr. Vale is great. He's handsome and rich. If he becomes my dad, you won't have to work so hard anymore. If Grandpa comes to cause trouble, Dad can help us."
Hearing this, Wilhelmina's heart ached.
Since Kaia became aware, she had been asking for a dad.
She could only make excuses, saying that her dad didn't want them.
But Kaia was quite open-minded, even comforting her, saying that if her dad didn't want them, she'd find a dad herself.
Since then, whenever she saw a handsome man, she'd chat him up, asking if he had a wife.
Seeing Kaia like this, Wilhelmina felt both heartache and found her adorable.
She kissed Kaia's cheek and said softly, "I know you want a dad, but not everyone is suitable. Mr. Vale isn't an option."
Kaia looked at her, confused. "Why? Don't you like him?"
"It's because he already has someone he likes. We can't pursue our happiness at the expense of others. If we did, how would we be different from those women who steal other people's husbands?"
