Chapter 573 Edgar's Guard
Smith smiled and brushed her hair lightly. "Don't overthink it. You know how it is in high society—love and favor are fleeting. Once you're out, everyone turns against you. That's where I am now."
Bianca asked, "Doesn't that make you really dangerous?"
Smith replied, "Don't worry, I know what I'm doing. I won't act recklessly. I still have to protect you for a lifetime."
Bianca gave a knowing smile and led Smith into the room.
Allegra stormed into the house and glared at Caspian lying on the bed. "This is all your fault! You came up with that stupid idea to let that woman's son replace Smith. Now look, he's lording over us. This time, it was deliberate. He wants to kill us all to avenge that dead woman."
Caspian, wincing from the pain, asked, "Bianca refused to release Emilio, didn't she?"
Allegra snorted angrily. "She's teamed up with that jerk now, spouting a bunch of high-sounding nonsense. She brought you ointment and supplements. That woman is tougher than I thought."
Caspian's eyes darkened. "Don't worry. I've found a miracle-working doctor. He says he can wake Smith with acupuncture. Once Smith wakes up, we'll switch identities, and that jerk will be out of the picture."
"What if he tells Bianca about us?"
"Relax, dead men don't talk."
Back then, Smith was gravely injured. To ally with Bianca, Caspian had no choice but to let someone else take his place. He thought the guy was just an actor, easy to control. But to his surprise, the jerk got too deep into the role and wanted to completely replace Smith. A child born of a lowly woman, how dare he?
Smith helped Bianca with her bath and lulled her to sleep. Just as he was about to lie down, his phone rang. Seeing the caller ID, he walked into the study and answered.
His assistant's urgent voice came through. "I heard Caspian found a miracle-working doctor planning to use acupuncture on that guy. If he wakes up, they'll definitely kill you."
Smith's brow furrowed tightly. He had anticipated this. It seemed his plan needed to accelerate.
Bianca woke up in the morning to find Smith already gone. After freshening up and getting dressed, she was about to head to the dining room when Smith walked in with a tray. On it was a pie and her favorite side dishes. The sight of the sumptuous breakfast instantly whetted her appetite.
She smiled and walked over, asking, "Wasn't it tiring to make all this by yourself?"
Smith placed the tray on the table and tied her hair with a band. He kissed her forehead gently. "My wife wants to eat, so it's worth any effort."
Bianca eagerly sat down and took a sip of the soup. The delicious broth opened up her appetite. She then bit into the pie, the tender and flavorful meat filling surprising her. The taste was familiar. When she was trapped in Snowpeakia, the pie from a nearby restaurant tasted just like this. It was special, reminiscent of her mother's cooking. She had comforted herself with this pie, feeling her family was always with her. But how did Smith know this taste?
Bianca's grip on the spoon tightened as she looked up at Smith. He was serving her some side dishes. Sensing her surprise, he smiled and asked, "What's wrong? Doesn't it taste good?"
Bianca shook her head and asked, "Who taught you to make this? It's so delicious."
Smith laughed and ruffled her hair. "Maybe I'm just naturally talented. I learned from watching a few videos."
Bianca argued, "But I've tried so many times and never succeeded. How come you can? It's so unfair."
Smith chuckled indulgently and replied, "You're meant to be my woman. As long as I can make it, that's enough. Now hurry up and eat. We have a meeting later."
Bianca finished the pie and ate a lot of side dishes. When she was getting dressed, the maid even suspected she was pregnant. A day of intense work left her exhausted. Returning to her room, she was about to sit down and rest when her secretary reported, "Your Majesty, a woman named Sarah is here. She says she used to be your nanny."
Hearing the name, Bianca immediately responded, "Let her in."
Sarah was the nanny Bianca had brought from home. When Bianca was detained in Snowpeakia, Sarah took care of her. After Bianca became queen, Sarah returned home to help her daughter-in-law with her newborn. They hadn't seen each other in a long time, and Bianca was excited. She held Sarah's hand, asking about everything.
Seeing Bianca's longing for home, Sarah couldn't help but wipe away tears. "Ms. Winters, being queen here is glamorous, but you're like a bird in a cage, unable to do what you want. Seeing you like this breaks my heart."
Bianca smiled. "I'm doing well. This morning, I even had a pie made by Smith. It tasted just like the one you bought for me. Sarah, can you tell me where you bought it? Then Smith won't have to work so hard."
Sarah hesitated, her eyes evasive. Bianca sensed something was wrong and asked, "Is there something wrong with the pie?"
After a long pause, Sarah said, "Ms. Winters, I'm sorry. There's something I've been hiding from you. Edgar didn't want me to tell you."
Hearing that name, Bianca's eyes tightened, her heart seemingly stopping. She felt she knew what Sarah was about to say. She clenched her fingers and asked hoarsely, "What is it? Just tell me."
Sarah sighed and said, "When you were detained for less than a month, I met Edgar on the street. He gave me Snowball. He said you were lonely and Snowball would keep you company. He said Snowball was born from the dog you two raised together. It would bring you joy like its mother did. I saw you were depressed and worried you'd get sick, so I accepted it and lied, saying I found it."
Bianca's buried memories slowly resurfaced. She and Edgar had indeed raised a dog together, one she found abandoned on the street. It witnessed their entire relationship. After they broke up, she left it with Edgar. She remembered finding a male dog online for breeding. But she left before the puppies were born. She never expected Snowball to be one of those puppies, raised by Edgar for years before coming to her.
Thinking of this, Bianca felt a mix of emotions, making it hard to breathe. She looked at Sarah and asked, "So the pie wasn't bought from a restaurant but given to you by Edgar, right?"
Sarah nodded without hesitation. "Edgar said he made it himself, using a recipe from Mrs. Winters. He wanted you to feel at home, knowing the Winters family was in crisis. He thought tasting your mother's cooking would comfort you."
