Chapter 576 Father-Daughter Relationship
Paxon blinked a few times, his bright eyes shining. "So, Theodore gave you and your mom matching earrings, huh? Guess he's getting smarter."
Kaia stared at the earring for a moment, then shook her head. "Nah, my mom's earring wasn't bought. It was passed down from my grandma. She lost one and feels really bad about it."
Just as she finished speaking, Theodore's deep voice came from behind. "Kaia, what did you say?"
Kaia turned around quickly to see Theodore walking towards her, his eyes filled with excitement; he couldn't hide.
"Kaia, did you say your mom has an identical earring?"
Kaia nodded softly. "Yeah. Why does Theodore have the same earring as my mom? Is it something your mom left you to?"
Theodore's eyes were stormy with emotion. This earring was left by the girl from that night. If Kaia was right, it was Wilhelmina's earring. Why was her earring in his room? Theodore didn't need to think hard to figure out what was going on.
He stared at Kaia's cute little nose and her lips, which looked a lot like his. He clenched his fist tightly. How could he have been so foolish? How could he have been deceived by Wilhelmina?
After that incident, he had asked Wilhelmina to find the girl. But she reported back that the hotel surveillance had been deleted, and the girl couldn't be found. So, for years, he had been searching for the other earring. Theodore never imagined that his little secretary had orchestrated everything so perfectly. No wonder he couldn't find any information about the girl. If he had found anything, it would have been a miracle.
Theodore's emotions were turbulent. He couldn't afford to be careless with the child. He needed to do a paternity test first and then confront Wilhelmina.
He hugged Kaia tightly, his voice filled with excitement he couldn't hide. "Kaia, would you like to stay here with Paxon tonight?"
Kaia looked at him in surprise. Was she going to stay with Theodore? That was her biggest dream. She stared at Theodore's handsome face and softly said, "I want to stay, but I'm afraid my mom won't agree."
Theodore kissed her little face and smiled. "Don't worry, I'm her boss. She won't say no."
He then called Wilhelmina, his tone icy. "Wilhelmina, Kaia is staying here tonight. You don't need to wait for her."
Wilhelmina sounded nervous. "Mr. Vale, Kaia doesn't sleep well at other people's houses. I'll come get her."
Theodore ground his teeth in anger. "Do you think this is someone else's house? Why do you always stop me from being with Kaia? Are you hiding something from me?"
Wilhelmina was speechless and could only agree to let Kaia stay with him.
With her mom's permission, Kaia excitedly hugged Theodore's neck, rubbing her little face against him affectionately. "Great! Can I sleep with Theodore?"
"Sure, tonight we'll all sleep together, and I'll tell you some stories. How does that sound?"
The two kids clapped their hands in excitement. Theodore smiled and ruffled their hair. "Alright, let's wash up and get ready for bed."
He told them several stories, and by the third one, Kaia was asleep, hugging a teddy bear and murmuring "Daddy" in her sleep. Hearing this, Theodore felt a pang in his heart. He wondered how many times Kaia had dreamt of this over the past three years. He kissed her forehead tenderly and whispered, "Sweetheart, I'm sorry for all the hardships you've endured."
Just then, Paxon spoke up. "Theodore, Kaia is your daughter, isn't she?"
Theodore thought Paxon was already asleep, but found him wide awake, his eyes big and bright. He pinched Paxon’s cheek and smiled. "Why do you say that?"
Paxon blinked a few times. "Because you and Kaia's mom have the same earrings. She's the person you've been looking for, right?"
Theodore kissed his cheek. "You really are the son of a great lawyer, with such strong logical thinking. I'm just suspicious; I need to do a paternity test. Kaia's birthday doesn't quite match."
Paxon was curious. "How doesn't it match? Does being your daughter mean she has to be born at a specific time?"
Theodore chuckled. "Yes, according to my calculations, my child should be two months younger than Kaia."
Paxon thought for a moment and then said, "Kaia told me her birthday is the same day as her grandma's death anniversary. She wasn't supposed to be born then, but her mom was so sad that she gave birth early."
Hearing this, Theodore's eyes darkened. According to Paxon, Kaia was a premature baby. Wilhelmina must have used this to confuse him. Knowing his daughter was right there but unable to acknowledge her made Theodore's heart ache.
He gently patted Paxon's head. "Don't tell Kaia about this yet. I need to think it through."
Paxon looked at him in surprise. "Why not tell Kaia? She always wanted a dad. She said her birthday wish every year was to have a dad."
Theodore's heart ached even more. Such a small child, always thinking about finding her dad. How could Wilhelmina be so cruel and not tell him the truth? If he hadn't found out, would she have let them meet without recognizing each other?
Thinking about this made Theodore furious. He ruffled Paxon's hair. "I need to find a safe way to handle this. Wilhelmina must have her reasons for not wanting me to know. Even if I know Kaia is my daughter, she won't marry me."
Paxon sighed. "You adults are so complicated. Theodore, you need to work hard to win Wilhelmina's heart. If she loves you, she'll marry you."
Theodore put Paxon to sleep and took a strand of Kaia's hair to the lab for a paternity test. The next afternoon, he received a call from his assistant.
"Mr. Vale, the test results are in. You and Miss Kaia are indeed father and daughter."
