Chapter 582 Paxon Goes to School
Sebastian was in the middle of putting the kids to bed when he heard the shout. He shot a glare at Paxon.
"I just got Zaid and Ingrid to sleep, and now you've woken them up again."
Zaid and Ingrid seemed to understand, their eyes wide open as they looked at Paxon, grinning at him.
Paxon walked over, grabbing their little fingers. "Zaid, you're gonna be a big brother, and Ingrid, you're gonna be a big sister. Now there's one more person to call me big brother. Isn't that awesome?"
Zaid and Ingrid, who had been sleepy just moments ago, kicked off their blankets and started waving their arms and legs, as if celebrating their new roles.
Sebastian looked at Paxon in surprise. "Bianca's pregnant?"
Paxon nodded enthusiastically. "Aunt Bianca just called Grandma to tell her. I rushed to share the good news with you. Aren't I great?"
Sebastian was naturally happy to hear the news. With a baby on the way, Bianca and Edgar's relationship would become even more solid. He wouldn't have to worry about Bianca's love life anymore.
He playfully knocked Paxon on the head. "So, what are you trying to say?"
Paxon grinned. "Dad, you see how sensible I am. How could you bear to send me to preschool? You and Mom would miss me so much you'd cry. Zaid and Ingrid would cry too if they couldn't see their big brother. So, for the sake of family harmony, I shouldn't go to school."
Sebastian laughed, amused. He pinched Paxon's little nose. "I knew what you were up to. Don't worry, once you start school, we'll all be fine. No one will cry missing you. But you, don't cry looking for Mom and Dad, or Zaid and Ingrid will laugh at you forever."
Seeing his plan fail, Paxon tilted his head defiantly. "We'll see who cries."
He ran back to his room to continue packing.
The next morning, he was up early. After getting ready, Paxon grabbed his little backpack, kissed the still-sleeping Zaid and Ingrid, and whispered in their ears, "Zaid, Ingrid, I'm off to school. Don't miss me. I'll bring you some treats."
Then he dashed downstairs.
Seeing Paxon not fussing, Sebastian was surprised. He walked over, picked him up, and kissed him. "Paxon, when Mom and Dad drop you off at preschool, we'll leave. Don't cry."
Paxon shrugged nonchalantly. "Whoever cries is a puppy."
"You said it. Let's go."
The three of them drove to the preschool. Paxon had already attended three half-days to get used to the environment and teachers.
When he arrived, the teacher greeted him with a smile. "Welcome to your first day of school, Paxon."
Paxon politely replied, "Hi, teacher."
The teacher put a sticker on his shirt. "Paxon, you're awesome. No tears on your first day. This is a reward. If you get five today, there's a special gift for you."
Kids are always curious, and Paxon, who never lacked anything, was excited about the teacher's gift. He waved to Sebastian and Joyce. "Bye, Mom and Dad. Go take care of Zaid and Ingrid. I'm off to school."
He turned and left with the teacher.
Watching Paxon's calm demeanor, Sebastian, usually stoic, felt a sudden pang of sadness. His throat tightened as he looked at Joyce. "Honey, why am I sad when he's not crying?"
Joyce's eyes were red too. She held Sebastian's hand. "We should be happy. If he cried and fussed, we'd feel even worse."
They stood at the door, watching Paxon's back until he disappeared from sight.
Sebastian felt an emptiness inside, like something was missing. He turned to Joyce, his voice tinged with sadness. "Honey, do you think he doesn't love us anymore? Other kids cry and fuss, but he's happy as can be."
Joyce felt the same. They had always doted on Paxon, feeling they owed him for the time he wasn't with them from birth to age two. They tried to make up for lost time, but worried about spoiling him.
Fortunately, Paxon was healthy and lively, without any of the negative effects they feared.
Joyce linked her arm with Sebastian's. "He's just being considerate, not wanting us to worry. Let's go. We'll pick him up early this afternoon."
Back home, the house felt empty without Paxon's voice. Sebastian was distracted all day, constantly checking the classroom video feed on his phone.
Before school was even out, he was ready to drive to the preschool.
Theodore, who had just come in, was surprised. "What's the rush?"
"Picking up my son from school. You wouldn't understand. You're single. You don't know the joy of being a father."
Theodore kicked him playfully. "Look at you, all smug. Let's go. I'll come with you."
They drove to the preschool. After waiting a while, they finally saw Paxon.
Sebastian quickly got out of the car and walked over. Seeing Paxon's unhappy expression, he was worried. "Paxon, did you miss Dad?"
Paxon shook his head, his eyes fixed on a little girl next to the teacher. She was cute and pretty, with a classic Southern charm.
Sebastian frowned. Could Paxon have a crush on his first day of school?
He asked the teacher, "Is there a problem? Why does Paxon look upset?"
The teacher smiled. "Paxon was great all day, very independent and friendly. But he spilled milk on Kaia Fairfax and gave her a massage, saying he was giving her a milk bath. Her clothes were soaked."
