The Poisoned Truth

Kane’s POV

I tried to calm my racing heart but it wasn’t working. Of all the people that could have overheard us that night, it had to be Dylan?

How do I work past this? What should I do? I pinched my brow anxiously, pacing back and forth.

I haven’t heard from him since the invasion that shook all of us. Everyone thought the vampires were all dead, only to be attacked from nowhere.
Why is he threatening me all of a sudden when we both left on a good note the last time?

“Is everything okay?” Jack asked carefully not to upset me further.

“Is there any other message aside from this?” I asked, my voice reeking of uneasiness. He must want something in exchange for his silence right? Or should I just kill the bastard?

“Nothing else, that was all that came this evening,” he replied, still looking at me with a worried and confused gaze.

“Get Simone on the phone. Tell him I want to see him as soon as possible,” I ordered and started walking away.

“That reminds me Alpha, he dropped a message after telling me about Cleopatra that he would be off the grid for a while, said he had some…personal issues to attend to,” he quickly added and walked away without getting a dismissal from me.

What personal stuff is he attending to? Has he decided to turn his back on me too? I started biting my fingers anxiously, a habit that has stuck with me since I was a child.

What if he decides to use Alex against me as well? Why are all the loose ends not properly severed?

I started walking to my quarters and went straight to the bathroom. As the cold water poured down on me, a thought formed as well. What if, just what if, I get rid of both of them at once.

For that, I’ll have to get to Cleopatra before they do.

First, I’ll tell Cleopatra that Alex is not dead and I’ll let her know who has him. Although this would ruin my plan to destroy Williams now, that can be easily arranged later.

And for Dylan, I had told Cleopatra that he and his men handled the Night Wolf Alpha. So, I could tell her that he’s conniving with the night wolves and that they are not yet dead. That can’t backfire right?

She would be furious and devastated but I’ll try and calm her down. I’ll make her trust me blindly at all costs. I could get them out of my way with these plans. All I need for the plan to be perfect is Cleopatra.

Why isn’t she back yet?

I need to be subtle about this. If they happen to get to her before me. She might not trust me ever again, or worse, even seek revenge.

With a grim determination, I stepped out of the shower and dressed. I knew that I had a lot of work to do and I can’t let anyone in on this. I have to do this alone.

But how do I convince her that Alex is not dead?

As soon as I got out of the bathroom, my phone rang. Dylan. I steadied my breathing, trying to control my temper and sound unbothered.

“Kane,” Dylan’s voice was a low growl. “Cat got your tongue? I can see you got my message.”

“What do you want?” I asked, my tone icy.

“You know what I want. And I demand to have it arranged, except you want Cleopatra finding out about your dirty secrets,” he hissed.

I gripped the edge of my bed in anger, still trying to steady my breathing. I needed to know the extent he heard and what he really knew about the discussion.

“What are you talking about, Dylan?” I drawled nonchalantly.

“You think you can wiggle your way out of this one?” He yelled into the phone.

“Listen Alpha, I’m not interested,” I said coldly. “Find someone else you could piss off,” I added, taunting him further so he could tell me all he overheard. I patiently waited for him to fall for it and he did.

“You know what I am talking about so stop this messed up act! A little birdie of mine told me that you’ve been poisoning Cleopatra so she would stay loyal to you and keep doing all your biddings!” He barked out angrily.

Wait, that's it? That was all he knew? Nothing about power or wolves? You gotta be kidding me. So I was worried for nothing?

I threw my head back and laughed so hard that my stomach hurt, all the while he was shouting and threatening to expose me to Cleopatra.

“You think you can get out of this? Just hold on until she finds out,” he threatened and I stopped laughing.

“For a second I thought you were threatening me, Alpha Dylan but you’re merely barking. She knows about the vial, in fact she asks for it herself. So you can go ahead and yell all you want, it doesn’t change anything,” I said amidst trying to stop the laughter building up in my throat.

I was worried for nothing. But I still have to do something about Dylan. I’ll proceed as I planned, I can’t keep leaving loose ends.

“What do you mean by that? How will she let you poison her? You sly bastard! You think that I can be easily tricked? I will expose you, Kane, and not just to Cleopatra, what would Williams think about this? Last I remember, he’s particularly fond of Cleopatra. You think he’s going to let it slide?” He said defiantly.

I thought about it for a moment. That is indeed a problem. Williams might get suspicious if he finds out and starts digging. He could find out more than necessary and that could ruin everything.

“Go ahead and tell him. Let’s see who he would believe between you and me,” I growled coldly.

“And what does that mean?” He asked.

“Everyone knows you’re practically obsessed with Cleopatra. So the idea is that you threatened me to make Cleopatra your chosen Luna and I refused so you decided to blackmail me. It’s really easy Dylan,” I said, my voice dropping dangerously low.

“How did I not see what a monster you are?” he screeched angrily and I held the phone out of my ear.

“Listen, Cleopatra can testify that it wasn’t poison. So stop this nonsense and focus on your pack,” I said dismissively and hung up on him.

I heard a soft tap on the door and then it swung open. Beta Jack stood by the doorway, his expression blank.

“Alpha,” Jack began, his voice hesitant. “Cleopatra is here and she looks…different,” he said.

“What do you mean by…” I froze mid sentence as my eyes landed on her approaching figure.

"what the heck."
