The Beta's Game
Renee's POV
When I woke up, the world around me was cold and dark. My head throbbed, and it felt like my limbs were weighed down by invisible chains. I tried to move, but my body felt sluggish, my muscles weak like I'd been drugged.
My breath came in shallow gasps as I tried to push myself upright. The cold cement beneath me was unforgiving, and the darkness around me felt suffocating.
I blinked several times, my vision blurry as I struggled to adjust to the dim light that barely flickered from a single bulb hanging from the ceiling.
I wasn't alone.
A voice echoed in the distance, low and menacing. “Welcome back, Cleopatra's substitute. You shouldn't have interfered and now, it looks like you walked yourself right into the lion's den.”
I whipped my head towards the direction the voice came from and saw a man's figure looming by the entrance.
The voice echoed again, closer this time. “You really thought you could pull something off, didn't you? Brave, but reckless.”
I gritted my teeth, willing my body to respond. My arms trembled as I finally managed to sit up, my back pressing against the rough wall behind me. I expected this much at least. I tried to stay sharp, to observe how many of them were there and what my next move should be.
My fingers brushed the cold metal on my wrist. Handcuffs. But they didn't bother to tie my legs. Did they really think I couldn't break out of this? Or were they counting on the effect of the drug they probably injected me with?
“You're lucky Simone hasn't arrived yet,” the voice continued a hint of amusement in his tone. “He's going to enjoy dealing with you personally, though. He had big plans for Cleopatra but you fell right into it, on your own.”
I smiled slowly. They wanted Cleopatra? Well, too bad they got me!
The figure finally stepped into the weak light, revealing the rogue who had pinned me before. He was tall, with rough features and a predatory grin. His eyes glinted with malice as he studied me like a hunter sizing up a wounded prey.
But I wasn't the prey. They are.
“You should have stayed out of this,” he said, crouching down to meet my gaze. “But since you didn't, I guess we'll just have to make use of you in…other ways.”
My jaws clenched. I could still feel the knife hidden in my boot, though getting to it would require a distraction and speed. The drug coursing through my system made me feel heavy, but my mind was clearing and sharpening.
Like I said, I saw this coming.
I met his gaze, forcing myself to speak through the dryness in my throat. “You're suddenly acting like the boss because…what did you call him again? Simone? Yes! Because Simone, your boss isn't here?” I spat, hoping to buy myself some time.
His grin faltered, just for a second, but it was enough.
“You don't know anything,” he hissed, his eyes narrowing. “I am the next in command. Do you know what that means? I am the boss when he's not around.”
I shifted my weight slightly, my hand itching towards my boot. “Fun fact? I'm also the next in command. So, in this case, we both are bosses, right?” I taunted with a sneaky grin.
His expression darkened, his lips curling into a snarl. “Shut up.”
My fingers brushed the hilt of the knife. Almost there. I needed to push him further and make him lose his focus.
“Hey, pussy! Ever felt like you're been used?” I continued, my voice steadying despite the pounding in my head. “Like you'll be discarded just like everyone else if he doesn't see the need of having you around anymore?”
That did the trick.
He lunged forward, grabbing me by the collar and lifting me slightly off the ground.
“I said, shut up!”
But he'd made a mistake. His grip was too focused on intimidation, and he hadn't noticed my other hand slip the knife free.
In one swift motion, I plunged the blade into his neck, slitting his throat. Deeper than I even wanted to.
The rogue gasped, his grip loosening as the shock registered. I twisted the knife, pushing him off me with a surge of strength. He staggered back, clutching his wound, blood seeping through his fingers.
I didn't waste a second. I ripped the cuffs off, adrenaline now surging through me, fighting off the last of the drug's effects. My vision cleared, and I scrambled to my feet, watching as he struggled to stay upright.
“You…bitch,” he coughed with fury in his eyes while blood seeped out of his mouth. But he was weakening, his movements slowing as the blood loss took its toll.
He wasn't even the main person? Did I just waste my fucking tactics? Could it be he suspected something like this was going to happen and decided to send someone else?
Without much hesitation, I moved towards the door, keeping my eyes on him as I backed away. “You should've known better than to underestimate a beta,” I said, my voice cold.
The rogue collapsed to the ground, his breaths shallow, his eyes still fixed on me with a mixture of anger and disbelief.
I didn't stick around to watch him fade. I bolted out of the room, my legs shaking due to the effect of the drug. I had to find the so-called Simone or at least, rescue Alex.
But before leaving, I reached inside my bra and turned on the second tracker with a menacing smile. Like I said, I saw this coming.
The halls were dimly lit, shadows stretching across the floor as I made my way through the maze of corridors. This doesn't look like their home, more like a hideout.
My mind raced as I navigated the unfamiliar space, every corner a potential trap. But that didn't scare me. I am right where I wanted to be and I can't leave without finding their leader.
The sound of footsteps echoed in the distance. Reinforcement? Or Simone?
I ducked into a nearby dark room, my back pressed against the door as I listened. The footsteps grew louder, and my heart pounded in my chest in anticipation. Dear moon goddess, please let it be their leader. But how do I know it's him? The guy I just killed had the same tattoo as well.
Just then, I inhaled the most delicious scent I've ever known. It was intoxicating in a way that knocked the air right out of my lungs. I turned my head around the room frantically until my eyes landed on a figure.
Mate.
