Echoes of the Unknown

Cleopatra’s POV

Rob is my mate? Why am I not excited about it? My heart ached so much thinking about Alpha Williams but why should that bother me? He’s the enemy! My enemy!

Rob noticed my frozen stance and threw his head back in laughter.

“I don’t mean that type of mate you’re thinking of, Shadow. I am to you what Lucien was to your mother,” he replied, making me even more confused.

“What?” I said, feeling a strange mixture of relief and disappointment. Rob might not be my mate after all but I can’t deny that he’s goddamn gorgeous.

“Lucien will explain everything to you later. For now, allow me to feed you,” he said with a playful grin, pulling me towards a direction I figured the kitchen would be.

As we walked downstairs, I tried to process what he had said earlier. What could he possibly mean by being to me what Lucien was to my mother?

My head was spinning with questions. I didn’t even know who my mother was to begin with. I needed answers, but my stomach growled louder than my thoughts.

Rob led me into a somewhat cozy kitchen, which was surprisingly warm and inviting compared to the creepy stares I’ve been getting all day long. He busied himself with preparing something, his movements fluid and confident.

“You’re fixing something yourself? Where are the kitchen maids?” I asked and he looked at me with a smile.

“It’s past dinner time, everyone else has eaten and retired downstairs for game night.”

“Do you have any idea how to cook?” I asked and he clutched his stomach as he laughed out loud.

“Why don’t you take a seat?” he said, gesturing to a comfortable-looking chair by a wooden table. “I’ll whip up something…edible that’ll make you feel right at home.”

I sat down, watching him with a mixture of wariness and curiosity. “What did you mean by being what Lucien was to my mother?” I asked, not being able to hold myself back.

Rob glanced over his shoulder, his eyes softening. “It’s not an easy thing to explain, and it’s not my place to fully discuss this with you. But know this: I have been tasked with guiding and protecting you. It’s my duty and a bond that goes beyond just the physical.”

“I think I’ve been doing a good job protecting myself all these years, don’t you think so?” I asked, my voice dripping with sarcasm.

“My job is to protect you from a lot of things but mostly, from yourself. There are certain…things you’re not aware of yet and I’m here to make sure it doesn’t consume you later on.”

“You’re implying that I could be a danger to myself?” I scoffed and he kept silent.

“How do you like your pancakes?” he asked, flipping the mixture in the pan.

“Just with syrup,” I replied, still expecting him to answer me but he never did.

The kitchen fell silent, the only sound was the soft tone he hummed while flipping pancakes. I stared at his broad back and different thoughts welled up inside my head.

Who was my mother? Could it be that Lucien is my father? I shook my head vehemently. I’m not a vampire so that’s not even an option.

“Dinner is served madame,” I heard Rob say in a sing-song voice as he placed the pancakes in front of me and I wasted no time devouring them.

“This is so good,” I murmured, while stuffing my mouth with the pancakes, “this is by far the best pancakes I’ve ever had,” I complimented him further and the smile on his face became even wider.

“My pleasure,” he replied.

I was about to comment more on the delicious meal when the kitchen door swung open, and the guy I fought earlier walked in. His eyes met mine momentarily and he moved his gaze away almost immediately.

“I’m sorry about earlier Alpha Shadow,” he said carefully, “I was only doing as I was instructed.”

“No hard feelings. I understand,” I replied and his eyes lit up with relief.

Did he just refer to me as Alpha? I was about to ask him why when he interrupted. “Lucien would like to see you both in his office now. He said something urgent came up.”

Rob’s smile faded, replaced by a serious expression. My pulse quickened. This was it. The moment when everything might finally make sense. I drank some water and stood up, my chair scraping loudly against the floor.

“I’m ready,” I said, meeting Rob’s gaze with determination.

“Hold on just a bit. Stay right here please, I’ll come and get you but first, I need to clarify a few things,” Rob said and stormed off with the other man right on his tail.

Who stays put when they are asked to?

As soon as they left, I ventured out and went upstairs, maybe I could get some sleep before they came to get me.

I was about to head towards the direction of the room I was given when I heard it—-a faint, echoing sound, like a whisper carried in the wind. It was coming from behind the locked door I had been trying to open earlier.

Curiosity got the better of me and I got closer. I crouched down again, pressing my ear to the cold door. The whisper grew louder, more distinct, until it wasn’t just a whisper anymore.

It was my voice!

My heart pounded in my chest as I listened carefully, unable to tear myself away, the words were jumbled but there was no mistaking it. It was me. Or an imitator? How could I be there and here at the same time?

I heard an ear-splitting scream and jerked away from the door. My breath came in quick, shallow bursts as I stared at the door confused.

What the hell was that?

And then, when I was about to move away, the door clicked open. Slowly, as if inviting me in.

I am Cleopatra. I’m not easily frightened. I reached out and pushed the door wide open. What I saw on the other side froze me in place.

There, in the center of the room was a figure—a little version of my figure, but it wasn’t me. It was the girl from earlier, the one with hair as white as snow. But this time, her blue eyes were glowing a piercing blue.

She stared at me, her lips moving in silence but I could hear her voice in my head, as clear as day. How is that even possible? This can’t be real.

“Find me,” she whispered, her tone commanding. “Before it’s too late.”

Who was she and how am I supposed to find her? The room spun, my vision blurring as the words echoed in my mind.

And then everything went black.
