Cornered

Williams's POV

The bloodcurdling scream that rang outside threw us both off the bed, shattering the fragile warmth I was settling in.

The sound was coming from downstairs. What is it this time? I growled. My eyes momentarily trailed down Cleopatra's body and a sigh escaped my mouth.

I could get used to this.. Right?

We threw on some clothes in a frenzy, the urgency fueled by the raw terror in the scream we heard earlier.

We both bursted out and made for the stairs. Nothing prepared me for the display in front of me.

The sight curdled my blood.

The boy who admitted to being a spy lay sprawled at the foot of the stairs. His head was bent in an odd angle, like someone stepped on it over and over again.

Blood formed a halo where his skull seemed to have caved in under a brutal force. It was horrific. His eyes were wide open, vacant, and starring at the ceiling.

I wasn't even planning to kill him. This was definitely the work of an eager amateur. Who could have done this? Someone is playing hide-and-seek with me.

I surveyed my pack members carefully, searching for a flicker of fear that could hint at betrayal.

I moved closer to the body and right next to him, a message written in his blood mocked me. “I'm right next to you, watching. Catch me if you can.”

“Renee!!!” I roared, my fist clenched. Anger coursed through me like a spring from a rock. This wasn't a fight. This was a sickening display of dominance!

“Gather the men. Close off every exit. Nobody leaves my territory until I find out the bastard that did this and may the moon goddess help him when I do,” I growled angrily.

Who is next to me? Who is watching? As I turned away from the body, my eyes caught something. A symbol. It couldn't be! What the hell is the symbol of the Night wolves doing next to the body??!

I turned to my side and there was Cleopatra. A horrified look on her face. It couldn't be. She was in bed with me. Could it be the Night Wolf Alpha I had a face off with the night Cleopatra was attacked? But why?

As I was about to leave, one of the maids spoke up. “Sir, I heard someone on the phone while I was running to come take a look at what happened,” she stammered, fear evidently laced in words.

That got me more angry. How can my land not be safe for my people anymore?

“What did you hear?” I asked impatiently.

“Someone was on the phone. A man. And he said he had permanently silenced the rat,” she narrated, causing the other people to murmur quietly.

A fresh wave of fury washed over me. Not only was someone killed right under my nose, but the security of my pack is constantly compromised.

“Matthew, make sure this is cleaned up and his body buried,” I barked to one of my men.

“I think it's her!” Renee yelled, pointing accusing fingers at Cleopatra. “Don't you see Alpha?” she continued, “we are always exposed to danger whenever she is around. It can't be a mere coincidence.” Her accusation hung heavy in the air, stirring whispers and panic among the other members.

“Where were you about an hour ago?” She growled, matching towards Cleopatra like a predator.

“Enough Renee!! She was with me,” I growled, stepping in front of Cleopatra. The hurt in Renee's eyes were the least of my worries at this point.

Cleopatra was calm. Her eyes flashed with defiance.

“If I was the killer, I would have done a neat job. This is the work of an amateur. In fact, I feel terribly offended that you would think I could do such a messy work,” she echoed with a proud smirk.

“Are you really bragging right now?” Renee retorted, meeting her eyes as if challenging her to a fight.

“Renee!! Enough!! Interrogate everyone around and make sure you get me the suspect,” I ordered in a tone that left no room for questions.

As I turned to leave, I remembered the lawyer's advice to mount CCTV cameras at some strategic points of the pack house. If only I had listened.

The news of his tragic death and that of his family still hunts me. I swore to get to the root of it. There was definitely foul play.

Steps away from my office, a thought struck through my mind like a lightning bolt and I halted.

Realization dawned on me. We could find out who the killer is within seconds!

I turned back towards the scene, a new resolve dancing through my mind. This could be it! The key to uncover all these mysteries.

I got to the scene in no time. My men were trying to clean up the horrible display.

“Renee,” I called out, my voice laced With newfound determination. She quickly ran over to where I was standing, “Get everyone. The guest too. Make sure they all assemble at the meeting room. And get the pack doctor, now!”

Within minutes everyone was gathered at the open arena. The pack doctor approached me, his face grim. I whispered my discovery to his ears and his eyes lit up with affirmation.

“That can only be possible if she has awakened,” he replied, confirming my hesitations, “But it won't hurt to try.”

I watched as Cleopatra made her way into the arena. Her hair was like a beautiful mess that cascaded down her shoulders. I ached to reach out and smooth the strand that fell across her cheeks.

With a curt nod, I gestured for her to come over to where I was. She moved with such natural grace that mocked the tension in the room, her hips swaying in a hypnotic rhythm.

As she came within arm's reach, I leaned in. Every single eye in the arena was pinned on us, breaths held, waiting for what's to come.

I heavied a loud sigh, my voice coming out as a low rumble.
“Tell me, Cleopatra,” I began, my words laced with urgency, “Who killed him?”
