The Dance of Deception

Cleopatra’s POV

I paced the corridor outside the training room, my heart pounding from more than just the encounter with Alpha Williams. I couldn’t deny that his touch had set my nerves on fire.

My fingers grazed over my lips slowly as I remembered the deep kiss which was broken by the sharp creaking of the door.

A warrior had entered and wanted to talk to him in private. When I made sure no one was nearby, I leaned forward and pressed my eyes against the door, listening to know what they were up to.

I’m a spy after all.

“What if he doesn’t take the bait?” I heard the warrior asking and pressed my ears harder. What bait? Who are they trying to bait?

“He will. Trust me,” I heard Alpha Williams say, his voice low and menacing.

“I’ve gathered the spies and given them their tasks as you instructed. So we just wait,” the warrior said, providing me with the only piece I need to complete the puzzle.

Fuck.

How did I forget to tell Alpha Kane that the spies he planted have been caught? I must have skipped it while being caught in the middle of all the drama.

“Good,” I heard Alpha Williams say, “make sure you and the other men stay hidden while the transaction goes on. Only jump out when the person shows up.”

I have to inform beta Jack about this trap before we get exposed. If Alpha Williams finds out that my Alpha was the one that planted the spies, it could ruin everything. Especially my revenge.

I moved away from the door and pulled out my phone, my fingers brushing the screen hurriedly to dial Beta Jack.

Every second that passed felt like a countdown to disaster. The corridor felt tighter, like the walls were closing in on me.

Come on, beta Jack. Pick up!

The phone rang once, twice, then—

“Cleopatra?” Beta Jack’s voice was quiet but tense on the other end. “What’s going on?”

I exhaled sharply, glancing around to make sure on one was nearby. “They are planning something. He’s set a trap, and the spies our Alpha sent are already compromised. He knows that they are spies but not who sent them.”

There was a pause, then a curse. “Damn it. What’s the trap?”

“They’re baiting whoever planted the spies. Their warriors will be waiting to capture whoever shows up. I don’t have all the details yet, but they’re ready to move. The spies haven’t contacted Alpha Kane yet?”

“Hang up for now. We’ll handle it. Williams can’t know you’re onto him so be careful. We cannot afford to mess this up,” Beta Jack said, ignoring my question.

He has changed so much from the person I knew in the past and the trainer I dreaded.

“I’m trained for this, remember? I’ll be careful,” I replied, my eyes darting to the training room door.

“Don’t get reckless Cleopatra. Get more information so we can finish him off and end this mission,” beta Jack replied, his tone serious.

The line went dead after that, and I stood there for a moment, the phone still in my hand, my thoughts racing. How did I let that slip up? If I hadn’t been here, we would have been exposed!

I had to be smarter, quicker and focused. One wrong move and Alpha Williams will find out everything.

The door opened and the warrior stepped out with Alpha Williams. “Let’s head back to the pack house,” he said, “I need to shower.”

And with that we all left for the pack house. He exchanged a curt nod with the warrior and I saw him take the opposite corridor leading to the warehouse.

Are they moving now?

“Why are you just standing there?” I heard Alpha Williams ask and I turned to see that he had already opened the door to his room and was inside.

“Um-I want to go and see Kira,” I replied. Why did I just lie?

He looked at me skeptically and smiled. “What is this? Do I have to fight for your attention with the kitchen maid now?” he said lazily and slowly made his way towards me.

Isn’t that why he killed Alex? So he could have me all to himself?

I didn’t even notice he was standing close to me until I felt his hot palm on my cheeks. My breath hitched as his hand lingered, his touch sending a jolt through my body.

His dark eyes bore into mine, as if searching for something. My heart raced, not from fear, but from the dangerous game we were both playing.

He leaned in closer; his breath hot against my ear. “You’re distracted, Cleopatra,” he murmured, his voice thick with suspicion. “That’s not like you.”

I forced a smile, steeping back just enough to put space between us. “I have a lot on my mind, that’s all,” I replied, trying to sound casual.

He stared at me for a long moment, and I could feel the tension rising. His hand slid from my cheek down to my chin, tilting my face towards him. “Whatever it is, you’ll tell me when you’re ready. Won’t you?”

The challenge in his tone was unmistakable, and for a second, I wondered if he knew more than he was letting on.

“Of course,” I said, my voice soft yet firm.

“Good,” he whispered with a smile, releasing me and stepping back. The loss of his touch left a cold void, and I had to resist the urge to shiver. “Now go see Kira,” he added with a smirk, clearly amused by my flimsy excuse. “But don’t be gone too long. I have something to discuss with you later.”

I nodded and turned on my heel, walking down the corridor, forcing myself not to rush. I could feel his gaze on me the entire time, like a predator watching its prey.

As soon as I rounded a corner, I ducked into a darkened hallway, pressing my back against the cool wall.

When I heard his door slam shut, I tiptoed past his door and down to my room. The room looked like it had just been renovated. I hope no one touched my stuff.

I reached under the hidden corner where I kept the spray Alpha Kane gave me and applied a reasonable amount. I can’t risk leaving traces wherever I go. Masking my scent was one thing Alpha Kane was dead serious about.

Alpha Williams is getting too much under my skin in a way I find very alarming. I can’t let this continue.

Before I could think further, my phone vibrated. I pulled it out and stared at the screen, my pulse quickening at the name that flashed across it.

Alex.

Impossible. Alex is dead. Right?
