Secrets of the Past
Cleopatra’s POV
I watched Alpha Kane’s jaw drop in shock when I walked in behind Beta Jack. His expression was nothing compared to those of Alpha Williams when I ran into him in the city two days ago.
Alpha Williams’ eyes held worry and concern but my Alpha’s eyes held…fear.
Do I still need to be loyal to him? I’m an Alpha afterall, although I refused to accept the position just yet. Cleopatra never leaves a mission unfinished, and this has turned into something more personal.
I must avenge Alex.
I’ll go back to my real pack eventually, but for now, I need to still pretend like a clueless member of the Silverfang pack for that.
Why is he still staring? From the corner of my eyes, I noticed that my hair was white. Fuck! I stayed up all night, practicing how to keep my hair color under control, but I must have slipped up.
If I can’t control something as simple as my hair, how am I supposed to control my powers? Maybe Lucien was right. I should have stayed longer.
I took a deep breath, forcing calm, just like Lucien taught me, and felt the color of my hair shift back to normal. I saw Alpha Kane blink rapidly like he’d been seeing things.
“Cleopatra,” he said, rising from his seat. His steps were slow and measured. I could still see a flicker of fear in his eyes. “Wasn’t your hair white a second ago?” he asked, his voice holding a strange tension. Beta Jack turned towards me, and then back at him.
The way we both looked at him must have made him second-guess himself, because he soon dropped the topic, masking his unease with a wide smile.
“Where have you been?” he asked, his voice turning accusatory. “We’ve had so much work to do. Our plans have been sidetracked because you allowed yourself to get kidnapped!” he growled, his eyes darkening with frustration.
I rolled my eyes mentally.
What the fuck? Was he seriously going to lecture me about that? Not even a shred of concern for my safety? Just irritation that his plans had been delayed.
I know that I’m just his weapon, a seductress he planted to destroy his sworn enemy but why couldn’t he be even a little bit concerned?
“What Alpha Kane meant to say is that we are glad that you are back,” Beta Jack interjected, his tone softer.
I glanced at him, surprised by the sudden shift in his demeanor. I have only seen this warm side of Beta Jack once. He hugged me when he saw me and ran like the wind excitedly to tell Alpha Kane that I was back. Now, he was even trying to smooth things over.
What’s happening?
“Yes. Of course, we are!” Alpha Kane replied, smiling awkwardly.
Beta Jack stepped closer. “Where have you been? What happened?” His eyes searched mine, filled with genuine concern. But I wasn’t about to reveal who I was or where I’d been.
“I’m fine,” I said coolly. “The Vampires kidnapped me but I managed to escape the next day only to end up in the hands of rogues.”
Alpha Kane squinted at me, suspicion creeping into his features. I maintained my demeanor, prepared not to give anything away.
“Rogues?” he asked.
I straightened up, meeting his gaze head-on. “Yes, rogues,” I repeated, my voice low. “They drugged me. I’ve been unconscious all along.”
For a moment, the room fell silent. “Right,” Alpha Kane finally said, forcing another smile. “We’ll go deep into that later and I’ll arrange our men to clear the rogues, but first, we have to get to work.”
As he turned away from me towards the window, I felt a surge of power pulse through me. Maybe it’s the Alpha blood in me that was trying to resist him pushing me around but somehow, I wanted to stand defiantly with my head raised high as his equal.
Lucien’s words echoed in my mind. You are more powerful than you know.
I steadied my breath, masking the energy surging through my vines, but inside I knew. I was about to say something when his voice cut through.
“All the packs under the Stone Heart territory have been assembled for a meeting at Williams’ pack. You will go along with Jack and resume your original mission,” he said, his back still turned to me, staring out the window like he was fascinated by the sight.
Do I need to remain loyal to Alpha Kane? To this pack?
His words hung in the air, cutting through my thoughts. My mission was simple. Infiltrate, seduce and destroy. But now everything has changed. I am no longer a weapon. His weapon. I am Cleopatra, daughter of the two most powerful Alphas.
A flicker of rebellion sparked inside me. I couldn’t let him continue treating me like a puppet. Not anymore.
“Alpha Kane,” I said, keeping my voice even. He didn’t turn around. “Are you sure that’s a good plan? Sending me back to Alpha Williams so soon?”
Without looking at me, he muttered, “You will do as you’re told. I own you, remember?”
Own me? Because his father practically raised me? The word twisted in my chest like a knife when I remembered the oath I took in front of our dying Alpha. My entire life has been shaped to please Alpha Kane all because of that oath.
But I was done being used.
Still, I couldn’t reveal my hand too soon. I needed to know more. I needed answers. How did I end up in this pack?
Then there is the vision of the nightmarish cell. Was it real? Is something darker happening right here in our pack? And there was Alex and what Lucien said about the Night Wolves being alive. I need to get all these cleared out without raising suspicions about my abilities.
For now, I will play along. But not for him. For myself.
“Of course, Alpha Kane,” I said smoothly, bowing my head slightly. “When do we leave?”
He turned then, his expression unreadable, but his eyes searched mine. “You leave at dusk tomorrow with Jack. He would be representing me.”
I nodded, turning to leave the room. As I reached for the door, Alpha Kane’s voice stopped me once more.
“Oh, and Cleopatra,” he said, his tone unsettlingly calm. “Make sure you don’t forget your place. You know that I know what you did in the past right? It would be a terrible shame if certain… truths came to light.”
I froze, my heart skipping a beat. How did I forget the most important part of the whole story? How did I forget the reason why I should remain loyal to Alpha Kane?
Without turning around, I forced a smile into my voice. “I won’t disappoint you, Alpha.”
No one should ever find out what I did in the past. Who I killed.
