Fate's Twist
Cleopatra's POV
Two days later, we set out to the Stone Heart Pack territory, the discussions I had with Beta Jack, vividly replaying in my head.
What's the real identity of Theo and what could he be playing at? I glanced at him as we rode in silence, my knuckles white with tension.
“Remember our plan. I'll give you a sign to come meet me at midnight,” Theo said as we pulled up.
The first face that greeted us was that of Alpha Williams's Beta, Renée. Nothing has changed, she still looked at me with so much spite.
Can't blame her for that. She looked surprised to see me. I thought our Alpha sent a message that I'll be coming with the guest?
“Can I stay in the room I was given before,” I asked Renee, smiling sweetly at her as she ushered us in.
“Of course not,” she replied sharply, “I will escort you to the new room you'll be staying in until you leave,” I gave out a soft chuckle as she stressed the ‘leave’ part.
“Where is Alpha Williams?” I asked her tauntingly. I knew it was going to piss her off.
“He’s not to be disturbed,” she hissed.
“But did he say that though?” I probed further, earning a scary glare from her which had me laughing.
“Chill, I'm not gonna eat up your Alpha.”
Another guard came in and took Theo to show him his room. “We would come get you when the Alpha is ready to meet with you,” Renee said to Theo and walked off.
I followed her steadily until we got to a room, different from the one I was given before.
“I don't want to see you wandering about and snooping around every corner. Stay put until you're called,” she said harshly and I just nodded.
“Yes ma'am.”
I was about to close the door when she stopped me by putting out her right foot.
“Trust me when I say this, I'll cut you up the moment you try any funny business. Alpha Williams might have believed the sorry story of your disappearance but not me. I'm watching your every move,” she threatened and then banged the door on my face before I could utter a word.
I smiled. She could be a worthy match. Could be.
I was scrolling through the new phone Beta Jack got for me and decided to play a shooting game. Few minutes into it and my stomach grumbled. I haven't eaten all day.
I quickly wore an oversized polo shirt I recently got and left for the kitchen. Why wait for food to be brought to me when I already knew the way around?
Our Alpha got me a stronger masking portion and this one won't wear off till the next full moon which is far away. I should be done with my mission before then.
“What time are you leaving the Port?” I heard Renee say into the phone as I passed a corner. “Are you sure you were discreet about this? You know my boss doesn't want anyone finding out about this piece. Make sure it's secured, I'll be meeting you at 3 pm.”
I listened closely as she said the time and place she would be picking up the package.
What could it be? I quietly crept back to my room and called Beta Jack. I gave him all the details so they can go earlier and get whatever it is Alpha Williams desperately needs for his selfish plans.
“You did great, Cleo,” I said, patting myself lightly. One of my tasks is to snoop around and gather information. I don't plan on messing that up this time.
My stomach growled for the one hundredth time, reminding me that I need food. I exited the room once more and made for the kitchen hurriedly.
“Hi,” I said cheerfully to the maid. She didn't smile back. She just nodded and continued kneading her dough.
Awkward.
“Can I get something to eat? I'm really famished,” I said to her, clutching my stomach.
“We are not done making dinner. If you can wait for maybe an hour?” she replied, not meeting my eyes.
An hour? Didn't she hear me say that I'm hungry?
“Can I at least get something to munch on before that?” I said in a cold voice this time.
She looked at me for the first time and cowered back when she saw my eyes. My blue eyes already turned gold as my wolf snarled within, threatening to let loose.
“We have some leftover Nacho balls? Do you want that?” she asked as she opened the fridge to get it out.
“Yes please.”
She heated it up in the microwave and soon enough, I was skipping to my room with a plate of nacho balls in my hands.
I was already eating them on my way as I couldn't bear the hunger anymore.
As I took a turn, I collided with someone and the plate fell from my hands.
I screamed, trying to pick them up. “No no no, I'm hungry,” I groaned.
“Should I get the maids to make you fresh ones,” a voice offered.
Alpha Williams.
I knew it was him from his voice but pretended that I didn't and still stayed crouched on the floor picking up the nacho balls.
“Just leave me alone if you don't want me to eat you instead,” I replied, smiling secretly.
He pulled me up and turned me to face him. Our eyes met, his were laced with confusion and surprise.
“Cleopatra?”
Why didn't our Alpha inform him that I was coming along with the guest? I wondered.
“Hey,” I replied shyly, as if caught off guard.
“What are you doing here? I wasn't expecting you,” he said, helping me up.
“Um, so I accompanied your guest. My Alpha ordered me to bring him here since I'm quite familiar with the place,” I answered, clutching the nacho balls tightly.
He seemed to notice and threw his head back, laughing.
Something about the way he laughed made my insides feel like jelly.
Stop it Cleopatra! He is the enemy, I cautioned myself mentally.
“Sorry, I'm really hungry,” I said to him with a soft chuckle.
“I'll tell them to fix up something real quick for you OK? What room are you in anyway? He asked, his voice suddenly low.
“Just around this corridor,” I replied.
“Go to the room in the east wing. The maid will get your things and a snack over to you. Can you find your way there?” he asked and I nodded.
Fate is indeed a player.
I got in and sat on the bed, looking over at the secret door that leads to the tunnel. I turned to go close but my phone fell from my hand. As I bent down to pick it up I saw a latch under the bed and it was unlocked.
I lifted it up and a tiny metal door opened. I picked up the wrapped object I saw inside and sat on the bed. When I finally opened it my breath caught in my throat.
It was the book of Alphas!
