Doubting Cleopatra
Williams’ POV
I took a slow, deep breath, trying to control the surge of emotions that bubbled beneath the surface.
“Alpha Williams, I didn’t hear you come in,” she said. Her voice was tense and agitated, like she was hiding something from me. Did she really think I was capable of such?
My wolf stirred, agitated at the thought of her doubting us. After everything, after all the moments we shared—how could she believe I had anything to do with Alex’s disappearance? How is she still here if she thinks I’m capable of such?
Renee’s words replayed in my head once more. Enough, I growled to myself internally. This isn’t about emotions. This is about control. And I need to leave the emotions behind and take back control.
I forced my fists to unclench, pushing my anger aside and stepping closer to her. She had already masked the expression on her face when she heard my voice behind a calm demeanor.
But her tense posture and the tight grip on her phone betrayed her.
“Uhm…Alpha Williams, is everything alright?” She asked, her voice rising slightly.
I narrowed my eyes at her, trying to piece together the fragmented puzzle, trying to allow her to tell me what that was all about.
Instead, she appeared too calm, too composed, for someone who had just been talking about me. I know she is conflicted inside. Asking herself if I heard what she said or not.
Since she wants to play, I’ll gladly join the game.
“I was heading to the Alpha King’s palace. Thought you might want to come along but on a second thought, I decided against it,” I said casually, though my eyes stayed locked on her, searching for any crack in her composure.
She hesitated, her gaze flickering for just a second and just as I thought, she strode towards me delicately.
She’s definitely up to something.
I crossed my arms as she got closer and leaned against the vanity table. “Funny how you always want to follow me everywhere. Why is that?” I asked and she froze but quickly recovered, replacing her seductive smile with an angry expression.
Her lips pressed into a thin line before she spun around, turning away from me.
“Is that how you see me? You’re doubting me now?” she asked, a hint of pain in her tone but I didn’t mind that. She could be pretending for all I care.
I grabbed her arm to face me and my wolf whimpered at the look on her face.
Damn it.
How can I be in control when she has the most beautiful eyes that could weaken any soldier?
“Just let me go. You can go to see the Alpha King alone. I don’t care,” she stated and tried to free her arm from my grasp but I held her firmly, sensing the emotions swirling behind her eyes—anger, fear, and something deeper she didn’t want me to see.
My wolf growled softly, torn between frustration that she was hiding something and that irresistible pull Cleopatra always had on me.
“Cleopatra,” I said, my voice low and rough, “stop playing games. What are you not telling me? Of course, I know you’re not telling me a lot, but you know what I want to hear.”
Her eyes flickered to mine, a flash of panic she quickly masked with a glare. “I’m not hiding anything from you Alpha. But if you keep doubting me, you’ll turn me into an enemy,” she retorted, her voice sharp.
I chuckled lightly. “Are you threatening me?” I asked, my grasp on her arm tightening slightly. She winced at the sudden impact but I didn’t let go.
“Of course not,” she replied after hesitating for a moment.
“Have I hurt you since you’ve been under my protection and in my pack?” I asked the tension between us like a live wire. She shook her head slowly and kept her gaze fixed on me.
“Have I given you any reason to be afraid of me?” I probed further and she shook her head. “Then how dare you accuse me of kidnapping and killing Alex?” I growled, ignoring the little voice that kept telling me to go easy on her.
Her breath hitched and the expression on her face shifted as if my question just confirmed her fear.
“You heard that,” she whispered, looking away. I grabbed her chin and made her look back at me.
“You don’t look away from me when I’m talking to you,” I growled into her ears and she shivered slightly. “How dare you?”
“It’s not what you think,” she replied in a pleading voice.
“Enlighten me,” I demanded, still holding her gaze.
There was a little hesitation before she spoke.
“Alpha Kane told me that he suspects you had a hand in it. But he just told me about this as I returned. He said that your initials were on the dagger they discovered close to the body. That was why he wanted me to return for fear of my safety,” she said, her eyes moist with unshed tears.
I stumbled out of my anger like someone just snapped their finger to get me out of a trance. It all made sense. But I won’t cave in so quickly.
“How convenient,” I replied, moving away from her, “so you were going to stay back because I asked you to, even when you thought that I had killed your very good friend?” I asked, taunting her further to get everything out of her.
“No. I was going to escape tonight. When I heard the news…I was… scared.”
The pain in her voice and the little sobs tugged at my heart. How did I suspect her of such? She’s clearly a victim. Who would plant my dagger at the crime scene and why? But I’ve not lost a dagger lately. The last time I lost one was the night my mate died. I remember lunging it at the werewolf that attacked while he fled.
It all makes sense now after all, it’s the same man that killed my mate! He’s the same person that kidnapped Alex. Maybe he kept the dagger as a trophy? But why frame me?
I pushed the thoughts back and reached out to Cleopatra, hugging her closely as she sobbed into my arms while whispering I’m sorry in a tiny voice.
The guilt ate at my heart. I made her cry. Would I ever forgive myself? As I comforted her, the door was thrown open and Renee stood there, panting.
Her hands were covered in blood.
