A False Alarm

Alpha Kane's POV (cont.)

I relaxed my hand and approached them quietly. Some of the men held up their weapons. Some cocked their guns. With one swift movement, my men and I could have them impaled.

They think too lowly of werewolves.

“We've come bearing important information. The Alpha of the Stone Heart Pack is planning to attack your camp in three days time. We have solid intel on their plans,” I said.

A murmur of disbelief ripped through the group. Their leader, a tall lanky man with a scar that ran from his eyes to his chin, stepped forward, his eyes narrowed with suspicion.

A faint smirk tugged at my lips when I saw the mark. I remembered an encounter with a wolf hunter a few years back. I gave him a similar mark. Could it be him?

“And why would we believe you, dog?!” He spat.

Did this mutt just call me a dog? I could feel Beta Jack snarling and looked at him to be still. I vowed to rip his face off when this is all over and I will have so much fun doing that.

I expected this much doubt.

“Because we're offering a deal. A mutually beneficial one. We want to stay out of this…conflict. We propose what you would call an alliance. We'll provide you with information on the Stone Heart Pack’s weaknesses, their patrol patterns, and the best time to strike. In return, you agree to leave my pack alone,” I said, a low growl escaping my throat.

I know they don't stand a chance against the warriors of the Stone Heart Pack. But at least, they could do enough damage, so that when I attack Williams, he would be at his most vulnerable state.

I paused, allowing the weight of my words to settle in. “We have a member within the pack who can provide you with information. Can you imagine the advantage that would give you?”

I taunted the leader further. “I know you hate Williams De Luca as much as I do. So why don't we join forces to destroy a common enemy?”

The hunters exchanged glances, their faces a mask of contemplation and doubt. The leader pinched his brow and scratched his chin, his eyes flickering with interest. “And what do you get out of this?” he asked, his gaze meeting mine squarely.

I met his gaze, my voice steady. “Like I told you, I have a personal score to settle with him that would only end if one of us dies. And then there is protecting my pack. You leave us out of your little hunt.”

The silence that followed was heavy. I could see him through his eyes, doing the math and weighing the gamble, the wheels turning in his head. Finally, he spoke, his voice low and cautious.

“And how do we know you won't double-cross us? That you're not in on this with the Stone Heart Pack?”

A flicker of irritation passed through me, but I willed myself to remain calm. “What makes you think that I would side with the man who killed my mate because she was one of your kind?” I growled. I smiled internally when I saw the look of shock and anger in his face.

Gotcha! This line has worked so many times. Even on Cleopatra.

He studied me for a while after that, his eyes narrowing. Then, a slow, predatory smile spread across his features. “I think we can work something out, Mr Kane,” he said, stretching out his hand and I took it.

I let Beta Jack fill them in on the whole plan and how it will play out. We signed a pact afterwards in order to establish trust.

“Very well,” I exclaimed, after we were done. “But if I find out you plan on betraying us, I'll make sure you and your children and their children to the tenth generation feel my wrath,” I growled in a cold firm voice.

Fear stifled his smile as he saw the look on my face. “I guess we are at the losing end here. We would regret it if you betray us and the same applies if we betray you. So you have my word.”

We retreated back into the forest, a satisfied smile playing on my face.

“Just wait and see, Williams. This is just the beginning,” I muttered to myself.

Cleopatra's POV

Why are they attacking so soon? I thought. This is not supposed to happen till they've thoroughly planned the attack. Or could it be a rogue attack?

I glanced at Alpha Williams, his face grim in the dim light from the moon that illuminated the hall. His hand instinctively reached for mine and squeezed it to offer some kind of comfort? If this is really the attack Alpha Kane is planning, he should be running away from me, and not comforting me.

But I'm not certain if it's the attack Alpha Kane has been planning or a rogue attack, so I chose to hold onto his arm firmly.

“Stay close,” he whispered, his voice barely audible over the growing commotion outside.

I nodded, my eyes darting across the room. Just as we took a few steps towards the door, it bursted open.

I readied myself, my fists clenched but before we could lunge at the figure standing by the doorway, the lights flickered back on, revealing a familiar face. Renee.

Both Alpha Williams and I let out a sigh of relief. I didn't even realize I was holding my breath all these while.

She stepped forward, the bow she usually carries firmly on her back. “It was a minor power outage, Alpha,” she said, her voice steady. “Someone must have seen a shadow and imagined the worst.”

Relief and disappointment washed over me at the same time. I glanced at Alpha Williams, who was shaking his head in disbelief. “A false alarm,” he muttered, his voice filled with both relief and annoyance.

“Tighten the parameters. I feel like a big storm is coming our way,” he ordered with a distant look in his eyes. Renee glanced at me, her eyes were literally screaming “Hey Alpha! The storm is right beside you.”

I threw her an innocent look before she left the dining hall. Alpha Williams turned to me, “More reason why you should take the medicine. If this was an actual attack, how sure are you that you could defend yourself,” he said with concern.

I eyed him slowly. “So you can't defend me?” I asked, pouting my lips.

“You know that's not what I mean, Cleopatra. Just take the vial,” he ordered.

I've already been warned. He can't deceive me.

I lifted the bottle up and emptied all the content on the floor with a flirtatious smile playing on my lips.

“What the heck do you think you're doing!” He growled dangerously, causing a cold shiver to run down my spine.

This can't be good.
