The Bond Between Them

Williams’ POV

Cleopatra.

She is here.

I froze, the world narrowing to just that one figure on the balcony. But then, just as suddenly as she had appeared, the figure turned and vanished into the shadows.

“Did you see that?” I asked, my voice barely a whisper, my throat tight with emotion.

Marcus followed my gaze, but shook his head. “See what?”

I didn’t respond. My mind was already racing, trying to piece together what I had just seen.

Was it her? Was she really here, or was my mind playing tricks on me? But one thing is for sure.

I was going to find her.

No matter what.

I turned towards the direction where I had seen Cleopatra’s figure as though I was in a trance. But just as I was nearing the entrance, the voice of the young wolf leading us brought me back to reality.

“Come this way, Alpha. He’s waiting in his study.”

He led us down a hallway and into a large room, where Lucien sat, his sharp eyes trained on me the moment I entered. The vampire leader seemed amused, as if he could sense my turmoil even before I spoke.

“Alpha Williams,” Lucien greeted with a faint smile. “You seem…troubled.”

“I saw her,” I said, unable to keep the tremor from my voice. “What kind of sick game are you guys playing?”

Lucien’s gaze flickered, but he kept his composure. “Are you certain it was her? Or could it be that you’re so desperate to believe that you’d convince yourself of anything?”

The words hit hard, but I didn’t flinch. “What are you saying?”

Lucien stood up, pacing slowly as if choosing his words carefully. “Cleopatra stayed here for a while before she left. It’s possible that her presence still lingers, after all, this is her pack. Your mind—your bond with her—might be projecting her image, but that doesn’t mean she’s here.”

“Or,” I interrupted, feeling my frustration build, “you’re hiding her here.”

Lucien gave me a measured look. “If I were, you’d already know.”

I clenched my fists. He is right. I didn’t catch any hint of her scent here. “Can you show me around? I want to see her room.”

Lucien’s smile faded, replaced by a more serious expression. “Very well. Follow me.”

As we walked through the corridors of the pack house, Lucien began to tell me stories about his clan, how they’d been isolated from the rest of the world with the White Wolves for decades.

Eventually, we reached a door at the end of the hall. My pulse quickened. “This is Cleopatra’s room,” Lucien said quietly. He opened the door and stepped aside, allowing me to enter first.

What I saw stopped me cold.

Rob, stretched out on Cleopatra’s bed, gripping her pillow tightly, his eyes shut as if savoring the scent. Rage boiled inside me, blinding and immediate.

“What the hell are you doing?” I roared, storming across the room and grabbing Rob by the collar. Before he could react, I threw him hard against the wall, my voice trembling with fury. “What’s wrong with you? Sniffing her pillow, lying on her bed like some creep—Cleopatra is my mate. Mine. Not yours!”

Rob scrambled to his feet, his face twisted in anger, and for a moment, I thought he might lunge at me. But before he could, Lucien stepped between us, placing a hand on Rob’s chest to hold him back.

“Enough, both of you,” Lucien commanded, his voice cold. He turned to me. “You owe him an apology.”

“Apology?” I spat, still seething. “For what?”

Lucien’s eyes darkened. “For attacking him. I called Rob up here to help you and find Cleopatra, not take her from you.”

I glared at Lucien, barely holding myself back from another outburst. “Why should I believe that? Didn’t you see what he was doing?”

Lucien’s expression softened just slightly, his voice lowering. “Rob’s connection to Cleopatra is nothing like what you think. What he is to her is what I was to her mother. There’s no intimacy to it—it’s a bond forged long ago, one that will be severed the moment she marks her true mate. You.”

I frowned, my anger slowly ebbing, replaced by confusion. “What bond?”

Lucien sighed, folding his arms. “For centuries, the White Wolves and my kind have been allies. It was agreed that the soul of the female Alpha would be tied at birth to the soul of the vampire clan’s leader. We are to Protect them, guide them, and act as companions until they find their mate and complete the bond. I’m sure you would have heard the stories of how female Alphas of this clan were hunted as trophies in the past. Cleopatra’s mother also linked our minds with those of her pack members. We can hear each other except one locks their thoughts.”

My mind reeled as I tried to process his words. Cleopatra’s mother…linked their minds with the vampires? It sounded impossible, but then again, nothing about Cleopatra’s world had been normal since the moment I met her.

The realization hit me hard. I was wrong about Rob.

The weight of my anger and pride crashed down on me all at once. I had let jealousy blind me, pushing away the one person who could actually help me find her.

“Rob,” I said, my voice hoarse with desperation, “please, help me find her. Tell me where she is.”

Rob looked at me, his expression unreadable, but he didn’t speak.

“Please,” I repeated, my voice breaking. “I’ll do whatever it takes…just help me.”

There was a tense silence, then Rob shook his head. “No,” he said flatly. “Not after calling me a creep.”

I pleaded, over and over, my pride gone, replaced by pure desperation. Finally, after what felt like an eternity. Rob sighed.

“Fine,” he muttered, walking back to Cleopatra’s bed. “But this doesn’t mean I’m forgiving you.”

I nodded as Rob lay back down on the bed. I reached for the pillow and handed it to him but he glanced at it, then chuckled softly.

“I don’t need it,” he said lightly, tossing it aside. “It was just for extra effect.”

Rob closed his eyes and the room fell into an eerie silence. Minutes passed, the air thick with tension.

Suddenly, Rob’s eyes snapped open, and he smirked.

“Gotcha,” he murmured, his voice low.

“Where is she?” I asked, my eyes gleaming with hope.

For a moment, he said nothing, just stared, almost as if weighing his next words. Then he looked to Lucien who gave a small nod, as if some unspoken understanding had passed between them and then, he shook his head.

“I’m not allowed to say,” he whispered.
