Chasing Shadows
The room seemed to shrink as Cleopatra tried to take in the whole scene. Her gaze darted between the Alpha and Theo, searching for a flicker of explanation.
“Theo?” She called, confusion and disappointment laced in her voice. She suspected something was off but this?
Theo’s smile widened as he took calculated steps towards her. “At your service ma'am,” he drawled, his eyes gleaming with amusement.
“What is going on here? How are you here? What?” she asked, getting more and more irritated.
“Let's just say, the lines between a guest and an enemy can be easily blurred,” he took more deliberate steps closer, bending close to my ear and whispering, “Not to mention the unfinished business I have with you.”
Cleopatra was close to losing her cool. ‘Who the fuck is this man,’ she thought to herself, and what does he mean by a guest and an enemy?
The Alpha cleared his throat, his voice booming in the tense silence that descended in the room.
“Cleopatra, Mr Theo here was sent by the council of Alphas. You see..” He paused and exchanged a gaze with Theo before proceeding, “Theo here is the estranged twin brother of Alpha Williams's dead mate.”
“In other words,” Theo explained, his voice dropping low, “I'm on a revenge visit, to see the ruthless Alpha that killed my sister,” he finished with so much venom and a clenched fist.
Cleopatra was beyond confused. “Alpha Williams's dead mate was a human?” she asked, bewildered.
“He wasn't aware of my existence but I've come in disguise after studying him for a while to carry out my revenge and you will be helping me,” he retorted.
“Now hold on, Theo. I don't know what to say, this is all news to me. How come you acted like you didn't know me while I was with you? Was it all a lie? How can I trust you now?” I asked in a low growl.
“Stand down, Cleopatra,” my Alpha commanded, “You are to go with him and assist him in every step of the way. If all things go as he planned, your mission might be over before you know it and remember I promised you a vacation? You'll get that!”
Something is not right, Cleopatra thought. She could feel that Theo’s presence posed some sort of threat but to who? She couldn't disobey the Alpha despite her uncertainties and burning questions.
As if sensing the thoughts in her head Theo spoke up. “Look I had my reasons for keeping certain things from you, but trust me Cleopatra, our goals align. I want to see Williams crumble just as much as you do.”
With a slow, measured sigh, Cleopatra forced down her roiling emotions. “Very well Alpha,” she replied, squaring her shoulders, “But make no mistake Theo, if your presence here causes but the slightest rift or threat, I will not spare you. I'm repaying the favor I owe by accompanying you to the Stone Heart Pack,” she said, her voice laced with icy control.
“Understood.” Theo said in a deceptively calm tone.
“So, what's your plan?”
“My plan,” Theo began, a predatory glint in his eyes, “begins with a secret I've been trying to uncover for a very long time. Elena, my sister wasn't like the rest of my family members. She possessed a rare ability, a connection to the earth itself. In Williams's ruthless hunger for more power, he exploited her gift, held her captive and drained her essence.”
None of these was making any sense to Cleopatra as a flicker of confusion crossed her features. Why hasn't she heard of the human mate with a supernatural gift? It should have been the talk of all packs but she's just learning of it today?
“Can you explain this connection your sister had with the earth?” Cleopatra asked with a furrowed brow.
“I will, some other time but for now, we'll visit the pack as guests of course, then we search for the tunnel that holds the secret of his treacherous acts, once we find it, we can easily defeat Williams.”
A flicker of surprise crossed through Cleopatra's face. Secret tunnel? Wasn't that where she escaped from the last time? If there was really something shady about the place, why would Alpha Williams let her go in there alone?
She met Theo’s eyes, her gaze unwavering. This man might be some delusional crackhead and her Alpha could be playing right into his sick game.
Theo equally met her stare without flinching. “Our goal is to dismantle the power he extracted from my sister and strip him bare in front of his people.”
The more Theo spoke, the more Cleopatra questioned everything. It just wasn't making sense to her. Her wolf bristled and she raked a hand through her hair restlessly.
“And it's just you and me doing all of this?” she asked, still not buying any of Theo’s words.
“Once we gain access to the secret tunnels and strip him off his powers, he can't hurt anyone again,” Theo retorted, averting the question.
Cleopatra shook her head, not satisfied with the things Theo said and his whole elaborate plan. She exchanged looks with her Alpha and he seemed quite engulfed with Theo’s story.
“When do we leave?” she asked, cutting Theo short, knowing better not to argue with the Alpha.
“I will discuss properly with Theo and get the message across to you,” the Alpha said dismissively.
She stole one glance at Theo before leaving the office. Was she really going to play along with this sick plan? Cleopatra thought to herself.
As soon as she stepped out of the office, she bumped into Beta Jack who had a worried look in his eyes.
“Can I see you briefly?” Beta Jack asked Cleopatra in a low whisper.
Cleopatra has always known Beta Jack to be an authoritative and stuck up person, this was a new look on him. She nodded gently and followed him out.
“I'm worried about the Alpha and the fact that he could be blindly putting our pack in danger,” Beta Jack disclosed after glancing around to make sure they were alone.
“Why is everyone springing up confusion in my head today,” Cleopatra groaned.
“There is something you need to know.”
He leaned in and whispered something to Cleopatra which made her jump in confusion.
“What do you mean?” she replied in a low rasp.
“Alpha Williams's late mate was raised by nuns. She was an orphan!” he disclosed firmly.
“What?” she gasped, her voice barely a whisper.
