The Game Begins
Kane's POV (cont.)
Cleopatra was deep asleep when we left my private quarters. My mind was still clouded with the fact that someone could have overheard us.
The uneasiness was getting me more and more agitated as time went by. Who was listening? And how do I find them?
“What's on your mind? You seem distracted,” Simone said, causing me to stop dead on my track with a faraway look in my eyes.
“Did you say something?” I asked and he heaved a heavy sigh.
“I was asking if I should still follow Cleopatra.”
“No. That won't be necessary anymore,” I muttered and he nodded.
“I'm sorry Alpha, but our date ends here for today, I have a bus to catch,” he said, trying to be funny but left with a disappointed look when he didn't get positive reactions from me.
My thoughts were all over the place. How can I find the person that eavesdropped earlier without revealing too much?
“Alpha Kane,” I heard a voice call and turned towards the direction it came from. One of my pack members stood timidly, her eyes to the ground like I could eat her up.
Well I could.
I raised an eyebrow and she fidgeted slightly. “What do you want?” I asked, my voice rising slightly.
“Beta Jack asked me to inform you that you have a visitor,” she said, not meeting my eyes.
“Where is the visitor?” I asked.
“He's in your office, Alpha,” she replied and I dismissed her.
My mind raced. I wasn't expecting anyone, who could it be?
As I walked towards my office, a sense of foreboding crept over me. Could it be about Cleopatra? Does it have anything to do with the note I found on the spear that killed one of my warriors?
I pushed open the door, and there, standing leisurely by the window, was Alpha Dylan. My expression relaxed a bit.
“Well, look who the cat dragged in. I thought you didn't want to hear from me again, Alpha Dylan?” I asked sarcastically.
He turned and looked at me, his expression hard to read. “I figured that we were not quite done yet, so I decided to pay you a visit. You do know why I'm doing all these right?” he asked, studying me carefully.
Like I would let him have her.
He claims to be in love with Cleopatra and wants to make her his chosen mate. Well, I can't refuse a deal. When I'm done needing his help, I'll let the wolf hunters destroy his pack.
“Of course! And she will be all yours when we are done defeating Williams,” I replied with a fake reassuring smile.
He clamped his hands excitedly and strode towards me. “Perfect! We are back in business then!” he exclaimed and shook my hands.
“Why are you really here Dylan?” I asked. I couldn't shake off the feeling that there was something more to this visit than he was letting on.
Dylan’s smile faltered slightly, and a flicker of something dangerous flashed in his eyes. It was gone almost as quickly as it appeared, replaced by a mask of indifference.
“I told you, Kane. I came here to make peace,” he said, his voice low and controlled. “But I also have information about Williams.”
I raised an eyebrow, curiosity and skepticism eating at my controlled facade. “What information do you have and why didn't you call me on the phone to say it?”
He chuckled. “Should I just leave with my information? I was merely passing and decided to come and see you in person. Was that wrong? Shouldn't I have dropped by?” he asked.
I studied him carefully. There was something off about him, something I couldn't quite put my finger on. Dylan has always been easy to manipulate but there was an air of determination around him today.
Should I trust whatever he has to say? What if he's being pretentious and wants to get back at me for what happened to his pack member? I wasn't going to trust his words blindly anyway.
“Let's hear what you have to say,” I said cautiously.
Dylan leaned forward, his eyes glinting with a strange intensity. “The Alpha King is planning on making Williams his overseer. Do you know what that means? We will all have to report to him!”
I felt a surge of adrenaline. What? This is why I wanted the book of Alphas! “When?” I demanded, my voice low.
Dylan hesitated, a calculating look in his eyes. “During the meeting of the Alphas.”
How do I know he's telling the truth? But I can't gamble with it. The information was too valuable to ignore. I need to strike before the meeting and it's in two days.
“How do you know all these?” I asked suspiciously. I can't blindly go with whatever he says, for all I know, this could be a trap from his own end.
He moved away from me, a smug look on his face. “Let's just say I have my ways,” he replied cryptically. “You're not the only one good at planting spies. I've been keeping tabs on the Alpha King’s movement from the inside and he's been planning this for a while now.”
I couldn't help but feel a sense of unease. Dylan has always appeared incapable of going the extra miles so how do I trust him?
“If what you're saying is true, then this changes everything,” I said, my voice low. Cleopatra needs to go back to the Stone Heart Pack as soon as possible.
“But how can I be sure you're not trying to set me up?” I said, not being able to hold back.
Dylan shrugged. “You don't have to believe me. But if we don't act on this information, we might all regret it. Would you want Williams to control your pack?”
He started walking towards the door. “Think about it, Kane. And remember, the meeting is in two days. Let me know when you have a plan ready.”
With that, he turned and left, leaving me alone with my thoughts. I was caught in a dangerous game with unfavorable options. Should I trust his words? I had to make a decision, and fast.
But one thing was certain. I would not let the Alpha King make Williams overseer over my pack or any pack at all without a fight. I will stop it at all costs.
Even if it means unleashing the big plan I've been setting up. I picked up my phone and dialed the first number that came to mind.
Time to unleash the wolf hunters on Williams Deluca.
