"Who killed the spy?"

Williams’ POV (cont.)

Or do I?

What if I chain her up and… stop it Williams! I scolded myself again. This has to be my attraction to her body speaking because I would never.

I pushed the thoughts aside and made it to my room to change into something…better, before heading to see Eugene.

The mystery of the spy’s death still lingered. I still had things to ask him. I wanted Cleopatra to see him so she would know if he was really the man that abducted her when she was younger.

But she did see his body last night and there was no recognition in her eyes, so who did she really see that night?

I ordered that he should be watched before going to search for Cleopatra. How come no one was watching his cell? How come he was found dead with no one noticing anything odd before he was killed? I would have to talk to the guard I ordered to watch over him.

I’ve already spent all night with Cleopatra instead of solving all these. But I don’t regret it. That made me more upset with myself.

The chilling truth is that whoever did this, is in my pack right now, not outside. And I need to catch him. The perfect trap was already forming in my head as I walked the distance to the infirmary.

“Alpha Willaims,” Eugene called out, his voice carrying a sense of urgency, “over here.”

I entered the infirmary to where he kept the body, my large frame filling the small space that he used as a makeshift morgue.

“What do you have, Eugene?” I asked, my voice low and controlled.

Eugene gestured to the body. “The cause of death is exsanguination. He was obviously drained of blood.”

“We’ve already agreed on that,” I said, my face a mask of indifference.

“The wounds on the neck are puncture marks, but they’re not typical vampire bites. They’re small, clean, and precise. It looks like something sharp was used.”

I frowned. “You mean like a weapon?”

Eugene nodded. “Possibly. I’ve examined the cell and there was no forced entry, so the perpetrator must have had access to the cell. And they were careful not to leave any evidence.”

“You know what else I discovered?” he asked, looking up at me. “There was no struggle. Which means only one thing.”

“Either he knew the person or the person brought a message from his Alpha,” I said, realization dawning on me.

“Exactly. He didn’t resist the attack,” Eugene confirmed.

I looked around the infirmary and pinched my brow. “Any idea what kind of weapon?”

Eugene shook his head. “Impossible to say. I’ve tried making a similar mark with weapons I suspected the killer used but none made the exact same mark. But whatever weapon used was sharp, and whoever did this knew exactly where to strike.”

A long silence fell between us. The implications of Eugene’s words were chilling. I have a murderer, a smart calculated murderer loose within my pack. And I had no idea who it was but I know what they are doing.

They are making their mark, challenging me.

“This is serious, Eugene,” I said finally, my voice low.

Eugene nodded grimly, rubbing the stumble on his chin. “I agree, Alpha. This is a warning to our pack. Whoever is responsible for this, is challenging you.”

That confirmed my thoughts. “We need to find out who did this. We need to do it quickly before they strike again and I know just how,” I said, my fists clenched.

“What’s your plan?” Eugene asked curiously.

“Gather some pack members, spread the word that the spy was saved. He didn’t die,” I told him firmly.

He looked at me like I was crazy but his eyes shifted when realization of my plan dawned on him.

“You think it would work?” he asked, a flicker of doubt in his voice.

“It has to work,” I growled silently.

The plan was set.

****

Everyone gathered at the table during lunch. This was one of those rare times we all ate together.

Why is Cleopatra not down for lunch? She should be hungry, especially after last night, I thought and a small smile formed on my lips.

The usual murmuring and whispers at the table was already building up and soon, the person we appointed looked at me and I nodded. He turned to whisper to one of the pack members sitting close to him and she screamed in shock.

And just like that, the news spread like wildfire round the breakfast table, going from one ear to the other. I glanced around carefully, looking at the faces of all the people gathered in the big dining hall, trying to pick out anything suspicious.

Cleopatra walked in just then, looking like a meal specially prepared for me. She wore a shirt that stopped just below her knee, her exposed thighs causing the memories of last night to flood in.

Focus, Willaims! This is not the time.

She sat on the other side of the table. Good thing she isn’t sitting close to me, I may not be able to control my mind or my hands from touching her.

Soon enough, the murmurings grew louder and the faces of my pack members were etched with shock and confusion.

I quietly got up and left the hall. It’s all part of the plan to trap the killer. Whoever it was, would be agitated and restless. He would come to the infirmary to confirm if the rumors are true and we would be waiting.

The only people that knew about this plan were me, Eugene and the assistant who spread the news.

I quietly crept back to the infirmary and took my position. One of Eugene’s assistants lay on his side on the bed, his body covered up till his neck, with a white cloth. The room was dark except for the little rays of light that seeped in through the curtain.

I stayed hidden in one corner while Eugene took the other end, ready to switch the lights back on when someone entered.

We watched carefully, our eyes darting around the entrance and the room. Every creak, every breathing was magnified in the silent watch.

I was beginning to lose hope. Maybe this was all a bad idea.

Then it happened. A figure came in through the door, peering it open quietly, their movements swift and silent. The figure approached the assistant, his hand reaching out.

Just then Eugene turned on the light and the figure whirled around, a look of surprise on his face as the light shone on him.

My face paled when I saw the intruder's face clearly.

Why the fuck is she here?
