Torn Loyalties

Cleopatra's POV

Just how many spies does my Alpha have in the Stone Heart Pack? Why is this man stepping out, claiming he killed the other man when he didn't?

Why is he covering up for Theo?

These thoughts danced around my head as I stayed still in Alpha Williams's arms. He looked at me for confirmation after the man stepped forward and I couldn't help but nod.

If this man stepped out as the killer, definitely my pack is involved. Theo does not have the power to make this man give a false confession.

It has to be my Alpha.

A cry broke out among the crowd as a lady stepped forward. “What are you doing Joe! You didn't kill him. Why are you lying?” the lady barked with tears streaming down her face.

I felt Alpha Williams's hold on me falter a bit under my weight and tapped his shoulder lightly. He let me down but still held my waist.

“What do you mean? What do you know?” he asked all at once. The lady fell on her knees, still crying.

“Joe is my mate. I know him better than anyone, he can't even kill a chicken, not to mention killing an actual person!” she cried.

“Where were you earlier?” Williams asked Joe.
“I was the one that served him, so I was in his cell,” he confessed, his head still bowed and his eyes fixed to the ground.

“No!! You did not!” his mate screamed bitterly.

“Look at me,” Williams growled at him, his Alpha voice laced with icy control, “Did you kill this man?”
His expression grew more deadly instantly.

The man fidgeted, glancing around the room. I followed his gaze as it landed on Theo and saw the fear that was laced in them. He looked so young and feeble, like he couldn't even hold a dagger properly.

Why is he really covering up for Theo? What do they have against him?

Should I let this slide? Something tugged at my conscience. The least that could happen is the death of this innocent man.

This is wrong. I need to do something. But what if Alpha Williams doesn't kill him? Should I bet on that?

I felt someone's eyes on me and turned. Renee.

She looked me straight in the eye like she could see through me. I whispered something to Alpha Williams and left the Arena.

My head was buzzing with thoughts about what happened to me earlier? When was I able to have visions? A wave of dizziness swept through me and I held the door for support.

I felt someone stand next to me and put his hands on mine to support me.

Theo. I could smell him.

I wriggled out of his hold, putting a reasonable distance between us.

He leaned close to me and whispered, “You know the show must continue right? How about we go find that tunnel today while they are all distracted?” he taunted, taking a step back from me.

There are no two ways about it. He's simply crazy!

“Why did you kill him?” I demanded, a mixture of confusion and anger bubbling up inside me.

“Because your Alpha said so,” was the only response he gave and started humming silently as he turned towards the opposite direction. “Remember, we'll go search for the tunnel tonight, don't keep me waiting.”

I quickly got to my room and dialed Beta Jack's number. I filled him in on what happened, excluding the part where I had a vision.

His silence sent chills down my spine in the most confusing way.

“Don't act on your own Cleopatra,” he instructed.

“What do you mean?” I asked as I paced round the room, my mind racing with questions.

“I know it sounds crazy, but our Alpha ordered that you provide Theo with every assistance he requests for,” Beta Jack said, his voice urgent.

I was still struggling to grasp the magnitude of the situation and the unanswered questions, now this?

“You didn't see what I saw, Beta Jack. I think he's up to something way bigger than us, it could ruin our plan and jeopardize the safety of our pack!” I warned, my voice barely above a whisper.

I could feel his frustration as he took a deep breath. “Those are the Alpha’s words. And it's final,” he replied. I could feel he was convincing himself more than he was trying to assure me.

A rapt knock on my door almost made me jump out of my skin. I quickly hung up and slowly made my way to the door.

It was the young boy's mate. I hesitated for a moment then opened the door wide enough to let her in.
Her voice was shaky and cracky as she began talking.

For every passing moment she spent, pleading and crying, it felt like someone was piercing my heart with a chainsaw.

“Please, help me. Alpha Williams ordered for him to be executed. I know he's innocent and somehow, I know that you know this too,” she cried, her voice trembling.

“I'm sorry. He already confessed,” I replied, not meeting her eyes, “I'm not even a member of this pack, so what can I do?”

“Please… Please, I'll do anything. Just help him please,” she stammered amidst tears, her desperate eyes seeking out mine.

I heaved a frustrated sigh. “I'll talk to Alpha Williams on your behalf,” I replied, trying to put on a reassuring smile. What else can I do?

She jumped forward and hugged me, relief flooding her countenance. “I.. No, we owe you our lives now,” she said softly and exited the room.

That pledge broke my heart. How do I convince Alpha Williams to spare him without mentioning Theo? ‘There has to be a way. I'll talk to him in the morning,’ I muttered to myself.

Soon enough, it was almost midnight. I had slept for just a short period before my alarm rang. Good thing Alpha Williams didn't come in to lie next to me.

I picked an outfit that would make me blend into the night and safely tied my hair up in a bun.

Time to unmask this monster and his so-called tunnel of secrets.

I quietly snuck out of the room and headed towards the meeting point Theo mentioned early. I moved with swift and precise steps, careful not to make any sounds.

As I turned to a corner, I glanced back and forth, trying to survey the hallway before moving forward. Satisfied that the hallway was clear, I crept out of my hiding spot and moved on.

“What are you doing?” a voice barked, sending shivers down my spine.
