Renee’s Confession
Renee’s POV
When the attack broke out, I was still addressing the people that were gathered, writing down their suggestions and reports.
It wasn’t like we didn’t expect this.
We always expected attacks and we were ready. When will they ever learn to stop their mindless attacks on our pack?
Amidst the chaos, Alpha Steve Othello dragged me aside and yelled into my ears. “Tell Williams that this is far from over, he will hear from me soon enough!”
Whatever it was, I didn’t care. Somehow I knew what it was about when I saw his fear stricken daughter by his side.
Do they think they stand a chance? I don’t even stand a chance and I’ve been his closest friend since we were kids!
Cleopatra came in and yanked everything from my grasp and now, Williams doesn’t see me anymore. Not in the way I want him to. I’ve come to terms with the fact that I would never be his second chance mate.
Not with Cleopatra still around.
We defeated them and before long, the whole situation was under control.
I started searching for Williams but he was nowhere around. On second thought, I decided to check Cleopatra’s room. He has been so out of it since she went missing.
My eyes widened in shock and confusion when they landed on Cleopatra. How is she here? When did he find her? What if she was never kidnapped in the first place and this was all a ploy to dip Williams deeper into her scheme?
For some reason, I can’t bring myself to let my guards down around her. Something about her eyes screams betrayal and if Williams is too busy getting into her pants to see that, I’m not.
As he instructed, I appointed people to go and clean up the mess in her room. Did Williams do that? But I didn’t see a body on the floor. Did the attacker escape?
I’ll have to ask him how that happened when he is done babysitting Cleopatra. Just then, my phone rang. It was from the squad leader I sent to the airport to capture the werewolf with the strange tattoo.
“Beta Renee,” he said, his voice hesitant.
A lump formed in my throat as soon as I heard his voice.
“I’m listening,” I snapped, trying to suppress the rising unease within me.
“The werewolf with the strange tattoo…he’s gone.”
My heart pounded in my chest. “Gone? What do you mean gone? You were supposed to capture him and bring him here!”
“We had eyes on him as soon as he landed. But he just vanished, like smoke, right before we could apprehend him. One minute he was there, the next…he was gone,” the leader of the squad, Jerome explained.
I clenched my fist, struggling to maintain my composure. I had reassured Alpha Williams that he would be captured. How will I begin to explain to him that we failed?
Why didn’t I fucking go with them!
“Get back to the pack house. But make sure you survey thoroughly before you do,” I ordered.
I ended the call and shoved my phone back into my pocket. I know capturing that man meant so much to Williams, the wolf who killed his mate had the same tattoo on his arm.
The guilt that haunted him all these years was still in his eyes and I want to help him ease the burden.
I need to inform him about this, so we can plan what to do next. I hurried down the hall, my mind racing with thoughts. If the vampires kidnapped Cleopatra, why did they let her go? Why didn’t they kill her or turn her? Something about her isn’t just adding up.
As I approached Alpha Williams room, I paused just outside the door. Williams’ voice carried through the thick frame, low and comforting, directed at Cleopatra. I shouldn’t care—l shouldn’t, but the ache in my chest wouldn’t leave me alone.
I pressed my ear against the door, listening. His voice was muffled, but I could make out the familiar tenderness in his tone as he spoke to her, calming her down. I hated the way it made me feel—jealous, helpless, invisible.
It wasn’t supposed to be like this. I was supposed to stand by his side, lead the pack with him, not be pushed into the background while Cleopatra took everything that should have been mine.
Williams has always been my everything since we were kids. I thought it would be that way forever.
Cleopatra had secrets, and I was going to find out what they were, even if Williams was too blinded by his attraction to her to see the truth.
I pushed open the door without knocking. Both Williams and Cleopatra looked up, startled. She was laying on the bed. His bed. Probably naked with a blanket covering her body while he sat on a chair next to her.
At least this time, he’s not lying next to her.
“Renee…” Williams began, but I interrupted him before he could say another thing.
“We need to talk,” I said, my voice steady. “Now please.”
I watched him take Cleopatra’s hand and squeeze it gently. “Just rest, I’ll be back before you know it,” he said to her softly in a calm down and I couldn’t help but roll my eyes.
As soon as the door clicked shut behind us, I could feel the heat rising in my chest. I’ve heard enough and I couldn’t contain my emotions any longer. Williams looked at me with a hint of impatience, probably eager to get back to her.
“We lost him,” I said flatly, hoping the news would shake him from whatever trance Cleopatra had him in.
His face darkened, the calm demeanor slipping away. I could see the storm brewing behind his eyes…the frustration, the guilt, the endless need for revenge. But instead of reacting, he ran a hand through his hair and let out a slow breath.
“How did this happen?” he asked, his voice low and measured. “You assured me that you would handle this.”
The guilt gnawed at me, but in my defense, it wasn’t my fault. “We were prepared. I tracked him all the way to the airport, but he managed to slip away from us. I wasn’t there…”
“Exactly,” he interrupted, his tone sharp. “You weren’t there, Renee. If you had been, maybe we’d have him now.”
The sting of his words hit me harder than I expected. “I had other responsibilities, Williams, your responsibilities,” I shot back, my voice tightening. “I was holding this pack together while you were…distracted.”
His eyes narrowed and for a moment, I thought he might snap back. But instead, he shook his head. “Is that what this is about? Cleopatra?”
“It’s always about Cleopatra, isn’t it?” The word slipped out before I could stop them. “Ever since she came into your life, everything’s changed. You’ve changed Williams, you don’t even see what’s happening around you because you’re too busy playing nursemaid to someone who might be plotting against you!”
Williams’ expression hardened, and I knew I’d hit a nerve. One that could have crushed his ego.
But it was too late to take back my words.
