"Time to go on a book hunt!"

Cleopatra's POV

I woke up all alone in bed, the morning cold pushing me back to reality. The memories of last night came crashing in on me. The sex was like one we've never had. How could it be rough and smooth at the same time?

I sighed as I got out of bed, my body aching in several places. Time to get down to my mission. If I remember correctly, Renee took the book of Alphas from me the last time, which meant it could be in her room.

What did they talk about the previous night? I was caught as soon as I tried to eavesdrop. I took a quick shower and dressed in a short and big polo. I did my hair up in a ponytail and applied my signature red lipstick on my lips.

Time to go on a book hunt.

I headed for the kitchen to grab something real quick and assess the pack house in the process. Which one is Renee's room anyway? And how do I ask about it without sounding suspicious?

“It's kinda quiet today. Where's everyone?” I asked the maid, while munching on my cereal.

“Alpha Williams and Renee went to the city. The warriors are training new recruits at the training ground. Most of the pack members are watching outside,” she replied.

They went to the city? Does this have anything to do with their conversation last night? Well, whatever it is, I'll have enough time to look for the book of Alphas undetected.

I finished up my breakfast and quietly left the kitchen. With each step, my heart pounded in my chest, the thrill of the hunt causing both excitement and fear. This was really a dangerous game I was playing, searching for the book in broad daylight!

But I needed to get it to my Alpha Kane as soon as possible.

The pack house was a massive structure, with countless rooms and corridors. I wandered aimlessly, careful not to appear suspicious to anyone I pass on my way. I passed by several doors, each one could be a potential hiding place for the book but it's safer to start from Renee's room.

Just as I was about to give up and ask someone to hell with whatever suspicion they may have, I found Renee's room. It literally had her name on it.

A surge of excitement ran through me. This was it! I took a deep breath, scanning the corridor both left and right before reaching for the door knob.

I frantically searched the room, going through drawers, closets, and even under the bed. Nothing. No sign of the book of Alphas. Disappointment washed over me. Where else could she have hidden it?

I tried putting everything back in place, careful not to leave any trace that could lead back to me being here. I must have been lost in concentration, trying to clear up any traces. I didn't hear the footsteps approaching. I whipped my head up immediately, my heart pounding in my chest. Is she back already?

The door creaked open, and a maid peeked inside.
She jumped in shock, not expecting to find anyone in the room.

“Miss Cleopatra,” she called softly.
I smiled at the familiar face. I held my breath, hoping she wouldn't notice anything out of place or worse still suspect me.

“Hey, you didn't tell me your name the last time,” I said, trying to push for a conversation. I was caught up in a mess when she overheard my discussion with Alpha Kane. Good thing she made a wolf’s promise to me.

“Kira,” she replied softly, “my name is Kira.”

“OK Kira,” I muttered, trying to bring up another conversation.

“Actually, I came in to clear the tray I used in serving Beta Renee breakfast,” she said, stepping into the room, her eyes scanning around for the tray.

Why is she acting like it's normal for me to be in Renee's room? Why isn't she asking me anything? I wondered.

Kira’s eyes continued to scan the room, landing on the scattered bed. “Beta Renee is terrible at keeping things in order,” she whispered.

I forced a laugh. “She is indeed. I can see that. I came to borrow curling pins for my hair but the whole room looks like it's been turned over.”

Kira let out a light laugh and nodded her head. Finally she spotted the tray under the vanity table and reached for it. I saw her hand draw out a leather-bound book and she pushed it back in immediately.

My heart pounded in my chest. That was it! The book of Alphas. My eyes widened in disbelief. So all these while I've been searching, it has been in plain sight?

Why does it look different from the first time I saw it? Did she change the cover so I won't know when I see it? Well too bad for her. She wasn't smart enough.

“All done,” Kira said and stood up to leave.

“You can go ahead,” I said, pretending like I'm searching for something. “I really need to find the curling pins. I need to go into town and my hair looks a mess.”

Kira hesitated for a moment, then turned to leave. “Sure, go ahead. Would have given you mine if I had one.”

As soon as she closed the door behind her, I slowly made my way to the door and checked to see if she really left. When I'd made certain she was gone, I headed over to the vanity table and bent down to pick up the book.

What if they find out it's missing and Kira mentions that I was in the room with her? How would I wiggle out of that?

My hands trembled as I took the book. I quickly slipped it under my polo, my heart racing.

Finally! I got the book! To hell with the consequences when they find out it's gone. I'll handle that when the time comes.

I turned and walked quickly out of the room, my mind racing. I had the book. Now how do I get it to Alpha Kane?
