Shadows of Betrayal

Williams’ POV

I froze, my heart skipping a beat as I saw Renee standing in the doorway, her hands dripping with blood.

Fear gripped me. Fear for her. Renee has always been by my side right from when we were kids. Sometimes I forget she can be vulnerable and weak because she takes on so many responsibilities.

Instinctively, I let go of Cleopatra and reached out for Renee. She was panting like she had just run countless marathons.

“Easy Renee, take a deep breath,” I said in a calm voice, looking her over to make sure she’s not hurt. I held her bloodied hand in mine and felt her relax. Her eyes held a type of fear I have never seen in a long time.

“What happened? Where are you coming from?” I asked, concern etched in my voice. Cleopatra moved closer and her eyes darted between Cleopatra and me in panic.

“The ambush…they knew we were coming,” she gasped, her voice breaking.

My eyes widened in shock and disbelief. How did they find out? Are there other spies we didn’t detect? Why did she join them in the first place?

“How is that possible!” I barked angrily. Who sold us out? “Did you notice anything in particular about them? What pack?”

Renee shook her head frantically. “They wore masks. They were already waiting when we got there. We walked into a trap we set for them,” she replied and paused briefly to take in some air.

“We weren’t expecting it, Williams. We lost a lot of our men and the spies even before the fight broke out. We managed to save only two of the spies. It’s like they knew we were coming and hired a special squad,” she finished and fell into my arms.

I held her steady, patting her back softly. “Come, let me take you to your room so you can get all cleaned up and…,”

“Don’t worry, I’ll take her,” Cleopatra’s voice rang out from behind, interrupting me.

My eyes flicked to Cleopatra, narrowing slightly. Something about the way she offered felt off, or maybe it was just the situation putting me on edge.

Renee trembled in my arms, like a wave of breeze just hit her. There was something in her eyes, something I hadn’t seen in years. My heart ached for her. Whoever did this will have to pay and I’ll make sure of that.

I didn’t want to let go of Renee’s hand and she felt it. She tugged at my arm gently and I looked down at her. “I’ll be fine,” she whispered.

As much as I wanted to drop everything and take care of her, there was too much at stake. My mind raced with questions, but there was no time to focus on them all. I couldn’t shake the feeling that something bigger was at play— someone had betrayed us, and I had to find out who.

I hesitated for a heartbeat too long. Renee didn’t protest as Cleopatra took her by the arm. I forced myself to let go, watching them disappear into the hallway, but the feeling of unease stayed with me.

The expression on Renee’s face told me that the ambush was much bigger than we had anticipated. Anger coursed through me as I watched them walk away.

I clenched my fists, fury bubbling up inside me as the weight of Renee’s words settled in. Someone had betrayed us, and the thought made my blood boil.

How could they have known about the plan? My mind raced, going through every possible variable. Who could have sold us out?

I paced around my study, my thoughts spiraled. I’ve already called for some of our warriors to assemble outside so we can parole the parameters. Someone from the inside. It has to be.

And I will get them at all cost.

No one else knew the details of the ambush except my third-in-command, the warriors, Renee and the spies. I ran a hand through my hair in frustration.

My phone rang and I stared at the screen, more anger bubbling up inside me.

“Williams, you think you can disrespect the Alpha King because he’s your uncle?” Alpha Othello sneered over the phone.

I swear to God I will kill this man if he so much as mentions marriage this instant.

“We have been at the Alpha King’s territory, waiting for you to come here and you’re taking us as fools? Who the hell do you think you are!?” he barked and I just snapped.

“Let this be the last time you ever mention this marriage to me. I dare you,” I growled in my Alpha voice before hanging up on him.

The phone call from Alpha Othello left a bitter taste in my mouth, but I didn’t have the time or the patience to deal with their nonsense right now.

The marriage arrangement was the least of my worries. There was a traitor in our midst, and that was the only thing that mattered right now.

I could still feel the anger boiling in my veins, my fists clenched tight as I walked out the study and into the hallway. The cold air hit me as I stepped outside, the sound of my men gathering outside echoing in the distance.

We need to inspect the surrounding areas and make sure the perimeter is secured. As I moved towards the gathering, I caught sight of Marcus, leader of the special squad, talking with a few of our best warriors. He spotted me and quickly broke away from the group, jogging to meet me.

“Everything’s in place,” Marcus said, his voice steady, though the tension in his eyes was clear. “We’ve doubled the guards at the perimeter, and I’ve sent scouts to check for any signs of movement. You don’t need to venture out there Alpha, they are already on it.”

I nodded, though my thoughts were elsewhere. “Has anyone reported anything unusual after the ambush? Anything peculiar about the attackers?”

Marcus shook his head, frowning. “No, nothing. We asked and they all said the same thing. The attackers had their masks on and they moved in on them as soon as they got there.”

I gritted my teeth, frustration heating up again. “We just have to find who tipped them off. There’s no other way they could’ve known.” I muttered, more to myself than to Marcus.

Marcus hesitated, glancing at me. “Alpha, you think it’s someone from the inside?”

“I know it is,” I said coldly. “Our plan was perfect, it could have worked. They knew exactly when and where to strike. They were prepared. Someone gave them that information, and I’m going to find out who.”

Then I’m going to return the favor.
