Silent Threats

Renee’s POV

I thought he would get back on track, given how he loves being in control of his emotions and everything around him, but I was disappointed.

I thought wrong.

“She’s been through enough,” he said through gritted teeth. “ I won’t let you throw around baseless accusations just because you don’t like her.

His words cut deep. Baseless? Of course, he saw it that way.

“It’s not that I don’t like her,” I hissed. “I’m worried. Cleopatra didn’t just walk out of that vampire’s den unharmed for no reason. Deep down, you know that something is off. She’s hiding something, and if you weren’t so blinded by whatever it is you have with her, you’d see it too.”

There was a pause…a heavy silence that lingered between us. I could see the unbothered expression in his eyes like he knew something I didn’t.

Finally, he spoke, his voice softer but still firm. “Cleopatra isn’t the enemy, Renee. She’s someone I hold dear. I trust her.”

“And I trust you, Williams,” I said, the bitterness in my voice undeniable. “But you’re letting your emotions cloud your judgment. If this pack falls apart because of her, I won’t be the one to pick up the pieces.”

Williams stared at me, his expression unreadable. For a moment, I thought he might say something—anything that would reassure me, but instead, he just turned away.

“I’m sorry for the way I sounded earlier, Renee; you’ve been my anchor for the longest time. Let’s focus on finding the killer,” he said, his voice distant. “We’ll talk about Cleopatra later.”

But I knew we wouldn’t. We never did.

I watched him walk away, and a cold knot formed in my stomach. Williams had always been level-headed and yet…Cleopatra’s influence was undeniable.

My instincts have always screamed that something was off about her but who am I to question Williams’ choice?

He always had the pack’s best interest at heart, or at least he used to. One thing is for sure. I would kill Cleopatra the moment I find out that she’s endangering this pack.

To hell with Williams’ feelings.

Kane’s POV

“What the fuck is wrong with everyone! Is it so hard to understand simple instructions?” I barked as my beta Jack narrated what happened at the meeting to me.

“Did Cleopatra see him?” I asked, hoping that she didn’t. I wanted to break the news to her myself. But now my plans are ruined.

“I don't know…but I think so,” Jack said. Just then, my phone rang—Cleopatra.

I steadied my breath, putting the words all together in my head. I wanted to use the fact that the Night Wolves are still alive to trap Dylan but now, how do I get out of this?

“Alpha Kane,” she said, her voice coming off raspy. “The Night Wolf Alpha attacked me.” She was silent afterward and I waited, but she didn’t say anything else.

I am the Alpha. Her Alpha. I can’t be bothered about this.

“You know it could only mean one thing, right?” I replied but she maintained her silence. After a while, I heard her let out a sigh before she spoke.

“You lied to me,” she said. I could hear the anger and suspicion in her voice. She can’t doubt me. I won’t allow it.

“How dare you speak to me in that manner!” I thundered in my Alpha voice. Still silent. Cleopatra’s silence was louder than any argument. I knew what she was waiting for but I’m not about to fall into that trap.

After a while, she spoke but her voice trembled slightly. Somehow I knew it wasn’t out of fear but restrained anger. “I’m sorry Alpha Kane. But you didn’t tell me about the Night wolves.”

I clenched my jaw, feeling the weight of the accusation and the suspicion in her voice. Beta Jack reached for the door to leave but I signaled for him to stay back.

“Cleopatra,” I began slowly, carefully, “there are some things you don’t need to know. Some things that I, as Alpha, can handle. And that was what I was doing. I want to handle it before you find out about it.”

“And Alpha Dylan? Was he something you were handling too?” She shot back but her voice still held the same restraint.

“I’ll take care of Dylan and his betrayal. Focus on your mission,” I said, a low growl creeping into my voice. “Don’t make the mistake of questioning me again.”

I hung up and slammed my fist into the table. Cleopatra’s words echoed in my mind. I could feel her doubt, her suspicion creeping in, and that was something I couldn’t afford. Not now, not when so much was at stake. Not ever.

“What should I do?” Jack asked eagerly.

“I’ll handle Dylan myself,” I replied coldly. “Make sure to keep an eye on Simone. Don’t let him slip away ever again,” I ordered and he nodded but his hesitation didn’t go unnoticed.

“And Cleopatra?” he asked cautiously, as if unsure how far to push.

“Cleopatra is mine to deal with. I’ll handle her,” I said, my voice cold and final. Jack gave a small nod of resignation but there was unease in his eyes.

I knew he had more questions to ask. He’s also in the dark as well as Cleopatra. He doesn’t know how big and deep my plan is.

I watched him hesitate, as if he had more questions to ask but before he could, the door burst open. One of our warriors stood there, panting and wide-eyed.

“Alpha,” he gasped, “there’s been an attack.”

My blood ran cold. “Where?” I demanded.

“Near the border… one of our guards, slaughtered,” he stammered. “But…it’s not just that. There’s something you need to see. It’s a message.”

I felt a low growl rumbling in my chest. This has to be the same person that attacked a guard with a spear.

Without waiting for more explanation, I pushed past the warrior, Jack following closely behind. How did someone manage to do this for the second time and he wasn’t caught? Who could it be? Dylan? Simone? Or was this someone else entirely?

When we arrived at the scene, my eyes fell on the mutilated body lying in the dirt. But what caught my attention was the blood smeared on the floor beside it—-forming words.

“Kane. It’s time.”

My heart pounded as I stared at the message etched in blood. Whoever had left this wasn’t playing games. This is the second warning. And now, everything was spiraling out of my control.

Who could this be?
