The Storm's Fury
Williams’ POV
There is something more to this.
My mind raced with worry and anger as minutes went by. I stood up, my body tense with adrenaline as I paced around.
“We need to find her. Now,” I snapped at Renee without meaning to.
Before she could respond, a deafening clap of thunder shook the pack house, followed by a blinding flash of lightning. The lights flickered and died, plunging the room into darkness.
A moment later, the wind howled outside, rattling the windows and sending a cold breeze inside.
A power outage? Now? The irony was almost laughable if this wasn't a serious situation. At least to me.
“Damn it!” I cursed under my breath. “We can't wait for the power to come back on, we need to move now.”
Renee's voice was calm in the darkness, mocking the turmoil within me. “We'll find her, Alpha. But we need to be careful. With the meeting of Alphas only two days away and your appointment coming up, we can't risk it. So I'll suggest we wait till morning.”
Is she serious right now? I'm furious that this could be linked to me. If she ends up dead which I know could happen because her wolves are still unstable, it will be all on me.
I'll live with the guilt forever. Just as I am living with the guilt of my mate's death.
I ignored her and started leaving the study. “We'll take two teams. You lead one to the hospital, and I'll lead the other to Alex's house so we can cover more ground.”
“Alpha Williams, are you listening to me? We both can't just leave in the middle of the night. What if there was an attack? What if this was all part of the plan the kidnapper set up?”
A sudden gust of wind rattled the windows again, and a tree branch scraped against the roof. The storm was intensifying.
Renee looked at me, her disapproval obvious in her expression as she shook her head.
“We need to hurry,” I said, my voice filled with urgency, ignoring her outburst. “Before it gets worse.”
Whoever took Alex might have taken Cleopatra but I won't let even a strand of hair on her head go missing. I won't lose another person in the hands of this mysterious wolf.
The first time, I was foolish. Now I know better.
As we prepared and stepped out into the night, the full force of the storm hit us. Rain lashed down, the wind howled like a wounded beast, and thunder raided ahead.
It was as if nature itself was conspiring against me.
“We can't risk losing our men when we need all hands on deck for the meeting, Alpha Williams. The storm is heavy. We can continue this in the morning,” Renee yelled into my ears, trying to make her voice heard amidst the raging storm.
I stood still, the weight of the decision pressing down on me. She was right. We can't go out blindly like this in this storm. I have to consider the lives of my men.
We retreated and I headed to my private house. I needed peace and quiet.
“Where are you going?” Renee called out and I waved her off dismissively. She ran after me and held my arm.
“Don't blame yourself, Williams. It wasn't your fault back then, we were younger and it's not your fault now,” she said trying to offer support and I nodded before walking away.
At twenty-three I was already leading warriors into battle. I wasn't younger back then. I was twenty-five when it happened and it's been three years already.
I walked in and dried myself before settling in.
I've always dreaded coming here. Since my mate died, I moved back to the pack house. This place reminded me of her so much but I need the guilt tonight.
The lights came back on, but the house was still plunged in darkness just like my thoughts. I just hope Cleopatra is OK.
Sleeping in the room was not an option as it was my mate’s sanctuary, she personally decorated it. I would be tainting it with my weakness if I go in without finding her killer.
I stayed back in the living room, hugging my knees while sitting on the couch and started drowning myself in guilt.
I could still catch a faint scent of my mate lingering around the house. It's been three years already and I can't find her killer. Now there is Cleopatra and the same thing might happen to her.
My wolf howled at the thought of his dead mate. I felt terrible as well. I lay on the couch face up, my mind wandering aimlessly.
I heard a faint sound through the howling wind. A voice, calling out my name.
“Alpha Williams!”
I jerked up hope igniting in me. It was Cleopatra! My heart pounded in my chest as I dashed to the window and strained to hear her again.
“Alpha Williams!” She shouted again and I dashed out of the house.
“Cleopatra?” I shouted back, my voice barely audible over the storm. I switched on the light on the front porch, illuminating the night. I caught a glimpse of a figure standing in the distance. It was her!
Without hesitation, I dashed outside towards where I saw her figure. “Stay right there, I'm coming to get you,” I yelled, disappearing into the storm.
The rain lashed at my face, but I pushed forward, she's back and I have to protect her. My mind was still a whirlwind of emotions. Fear for her safety, anger, and an overwhelming sense of relief.
As I drew closer, I could make out her form more clearly. She was injured, her clothes torn, and she was struggling to stay upright. My heart sank at the sight of her.
“Cleopatra!” I called out again, my voice filled with urgency. I need to get her back inside. To where it is warm.
She turned towards me, her face a mask of pain and fear at first. I reached out to her but noticed that her expression changed, and a sinister glint appeared in her eyes.
I shook my head, as if trying to wave off the look I just saw on her face but when I looked again, it was still there.
“Williams,” she whispered, her voice laced with venom. “It's time for payback.”
“What?” I asked, utterly confused.
But she didn't respond. Instead, she lunged at me, her claws extended.
