Marcus
Williams’ POV
“Who?” I growled angrily, my fists clenched.
Renee hesitated for a moment, her eyes flickering with uncertainty. I could feel her internal struggle—this wasn’t what she wanted to say, but something she needed to.
I stepped closer, my heart pounding in my chest as her next words would change everything. Would she mention Cleopatra? I silently prayed that wouldn’t be the case.
She met my face, her voice steady but barely above a whisper. “It’s Marcus.”
I felt my entire body tense up at the mention of his name. My third in command? Marcus hasn’t been around lately, he just returned from a trip overseas so how can this be possible? The idea that he could be the one to betray us…it didn’t make sense.
“Marcus?” I growled again, louder this time, the name sounding foreign in my mouth, dripping with suspicion. “What made you say that?”
Renee took a deep breath, her eyes locked onto mine. “I may be wrong. But in the last few weeks that you’ve been…distracted, I’ve noticed things—small things. He’s been disappearing for hours at a time, giving vague excuses. I overheard him on the phone, speaking in hushed tones. When I confronted him, he was startled, like I’d caught him doing something wrong.”
My fists clenched tighter, rage and confusion swirling inside me. Marcus had been by my side just like Renee. He had fought for the pack, had earned my trust in blood and loyalty. But Renee wouldn’t say this lightly.
She wouldn’t accuse someone without a reason, not to mention Marcus. Does this have anything to do with his trip? I had found it suspicious initially but he reassured me that it was for his mate and he needed to go and find her but he ultimately came back alone.
Renee must have sensed my inner turmoil because she took a step closer, her voice formed now. “I don’t have proof, Alpha. But one thing is clear, Marcus is definitely hiding something and with this ambush, It could be much worse than we imagine.”
I swallowed hard, trying to suppress the rage building inside me. If Marcus was the traitor, how could I trust anyone after this? He is as close to me as Renee although he hasn’t been present for a while now.
“What if you’re wrong? What if it’s something totally unrelated?” I asked, praying silently that it was all a big misunderstanding because I would hesitate to strike him dead if he did this.
“I’m not wrong about him being suspicious,” Renee replied, her tone sharp with conviction. “I can feel it. Marcus is definitely hiding something and the timing of this ambush doesn’t help his case at all.”
I nodded, feeling the weight of the situation crushing down on me. Marcus?
“Alright. We’ll proceed quietly. We don’t want him finding out that we’re on to him. I will call for another council meeting and bait him to open up. It’s either that or I handle it myself and trust me, his corpse will be the only thing everyone will see when I’m done.”
The idea of confronting Marcus, the possibility of betrayal festering within my inner circle—it twisted something deep in my gut. Maybe it is all a big misunderstanding. But I couldn’t afford to let emotions cloud my judgment. The pack came first. Always.
I turned to leave, my mind already spinning with strategies on how to get him to admit what he did, when Renee’s voice stopped me again.
“Alpha,” she called, softer this time. I glanced back at her, and she looked hesitant once more, like she had one last thing to say.
“What is it?” I asked, my patience already thinning.
Her lips stretched into a thin line before she spoke. “If it does turn out to be him…promise me you’ll let me be the one to take him down.”
I paused, staring at her for a long moment. The fire in her eye was unmistakable—burning with rage. I knew why she wanted this, why it had to be her. She’d lost too many people on her watch today and as much as I want to be the one to kill him, I’ll leave him to Renee.
I nodded slowly. “If it comes to that and he’s guilty, he’s yours.”
With that, I turned and left the room, my heart heavy with the weight of what was ahead. I picked up my phone and called one of the council members, “Call everyone to the meeting room right this instant. We have a situation.”
I paced in the meeting room, my mind buzzling with questions. Could Marcus really be the traitor? The thought felt like a dagger to the gut. He had fought bedside me since I became the Alpha after my parents died. He had helped build the Stone Heart Pack into what it is now and to think he could do this, made my blood boil.
The door creaked open, and the council members filed in one by one. Marcus was among them, his face as unreadable as ever. His expression was cool, confident. It made me question everything.
Could Renee be wrong? After all, he had been helpful since the ambush but it could all be an act to throw us off, right?
As soon as they were seated, I wasted no time in discussing our findings. “The traitor is among us as of this moment,” I began, my voice cold and laced with authority.
A murmur rippled through the room with members throwing accusatory glances at the next person. I could feel Marcus's eyes on me, but I didn't meet his gaze.
I couldn't.
I leaned forward, my voice dropping to a near growl. “Marcus, why don't you tell us all what you've been up to.” Marcus was already on his feet. I locked eyes with him but his face was a mask of confusion and shook.
The room turned towards him in confusion but everyone was silent. The tension was so thick that you could hear a pin drop.
“You should choose your next words carefully, Marcus,” I said, my voice a low and dangerous murmur. I half-expected him to plead for forgiveness, but instead, something dark flickered in his eyes.
Then, unexpectedly, he laughed. The sound was chilling, reverberating through the room like a harbinger of doom.
