The Eavesdropper
Cleopatra’s POV
A cold sweat broke out on my brow as the realization of what just happened dawned on me. Someone was listening! What did they hear? Does this jeopardize the mission?
My heart pounded in my ears, a drumbeat of panic. I glanced at Alpha Kane, his expression unreadable. He looked like he was battling to come up with an idea.
“Do you think they heard us?” I asked him, trying to calm my racing heart. I had to think, to plan, but my mind was a whirlwind of confusion.
What would they do with this information they just got? Would they report to Alpha Williams? Or worse, would they use it as leverage against me?
The possibilities were endless, but one thing is for sure, I’m sticking around to find out. I won’t run. I must get this mission done or die trying.
“You should leave, Alpha Kane. I’ll stay behind and find out who that was and what they heard,” I said with a determined look and he nodded.
A sharp rap echoed from the door, and my heart leaped into my throat. Alpha Kane turned to go towards the door but it opened before he could get to it.
Alpha Williams.
My breath caught in my throat. This was it. Did he charge in to confront us after hearing what we were talking about?
His expression said otherwise. He looked at both of us weirdly as we stared at him, expecting the worst. He looked genuinely surprised.
“Are you ok? You look like you just saw a ghost,” he asked with humor laced in his voice.
“Uum..I..I thought..,” I stammered, my mind racing. What could I say?
“I was just saying my goodbye,” Alpha Kane cut in, his voice smooth and calm. He gave me a quick, reassuring glance before turning to Alpha Williams.
“I’m sorry for barging in unannounced Alpha Williams. Cleopatra assured me she’ll come back when she’s all better,” Alpha Kane said without missing a beat.
A wave of relief washed over me. That was smart. That would have to do for now, while I try to figure out who eavesdropped on our conversation.
He stole one last glance at me and left the room.
I was left alone with Alpha Williams. “I’ll get a maid to clean this room,” he said, looking around at the blood on the sheets and floor. “You’ll have to stay in my room till it’s all cleaned up.”
Things are falling into place. Except for the eavesdropper. I nodded and he helped me up.
“Why did you slash your thighs?” He asked, a serious and hard look etched on his face.
Slash my thighs? Is he joking? I looked down at my thighs, there were just dried blood and faint claw marks. Who’s claw did this to me? I thought, confused.
“What do you mean?” I asked.
He stared hard at my face and sighed. “Eugene did say you could forget,” he muttered. “Don’t worry about it,” he added.
He held my hands and led me out of the room. On our way out, one of the maids entering to clean the room, looked down nervously as soon as our eyes met. Could it be her?
I let Williams take me to his room and I went straight to the bathroom. I stayed there long enough, thinking of how to approach the maid.
When I finally came out, Alpha Williams was gone. I didn’t hear him leave. He left a shirt on the bed for me which I put on, the smooth fabric giving me comfort.
Exhaustion gnawed at me but I had to eat. I left the room and made for the kitchen.
“Sorry miss,” one of the maids called out. “Alpha Williams said we should bring your food up to the room. He said you should be resting,” she said nervously.
I rolled my eyes. I could take on any warrior right now. That’s how strong I feel. Maybe it’s the elixir Alpha Kane gave me, but I feel better already.
“Just give me something to eat. I’m famished,” I replied and she did.
The food was simple - a bowl of soup and some bread. But it was enough. As I ate, my mind raced.
The maid in the kitchen with me was acting odd as well. Was it just one eavesdropper or were they two? Why is she acting nervous?
I finished my meal quickly and returned to Alpha Williams’ room. I needed to think. The eavesdropper was a loose end that needed to be tied up and I will do just that. At any cost, I swore mentally.
I lay down on the bed, trying to relax, but my mind was too active. The bed was filled with the scent of Alpha Williams. It made me excited and warm inside.
I closed my eyes, focusing on my breathing, trying to calm myself. But the thoughts of the eavesdropper were soon replaced by the memory of Alpha Williams, buried deep inside me.
Just as I was beginning to drift off, I heard a soft knock on the door. I sat up, alert. Who could it be?
“Come in,” I called out.
The door creaked open, and the maid who was cleaning my room earlier stepped in. She was carrying a tray with a cup of tea and some biscuits.
How do I confront her about what she heard? Should I just kill her? No, I’ll just be drawing attention to myself unnecessarily. What will I do?
“I brought you this,” she said softly, placing the tray on the bedside table, not meeting my eyes. “You must be exhausted.”
I thanked her and sat up. For some reason, her face looks oddly familiar. Of course she should be familiar, Cleopatra! I said to myself, she is a maid here!
But there was something else.
“Thank you,” I said again. “You’re very kind.”
She smiled. “It’s no trouble at all, miss. I just wanted to check on you. But you look all better now.”
I forced a smile. “I feel better. Just tired.”
She turned to leave and I called out to her.
“I need to talk to you,” I began, my voice steady, as I got up from the bed and approached her slowly.
She looked up, startled. “Yes?”
I took a deep breath, steadying my composure. “I need you to be honest with me. Did you by any chance hear my conversation with my Alpha earlier?”
Her eyes widened, but not in fear. Somehow, I felt like she saw this confrontation coming.
She hesitated for a moment, then nodded slowly. “I heard parts of it,” she whispered.
A surge of adrenaline coursed through me. I had to stay calm. “What did you hear?”
She looked around nervously, as if afraid someone would overhear her. “I heard you talking about Alpha Willaims,” she said quietly. “And about a mission.”
My heart pounded. Well I can make up an excuse if that was all she heard. “Anything else?” I pressed.
She hesitated again, her eyes darting to the door. Finally, she said, “I heard you say you were going to betray him by gathering information to use against him.”
My blood ran cold. She heard everything!
