Between Rage and Desire
Williams’ POV
Could I really bring her back into my life after everything that had happened? My wolf howled in protest at the idea of abandoning her, but I knew that it wasn't going to be that simple.
Before I could respond, that familiar scent filled the room once again, stronger this time.
Cleopatra.
My head snapped up, my wolf roaring to the surface. The scent was unmistakable—she was close. My body tensed, my eyes narrowing as I turned towards the large wooden doors of the study. Why was she here, in the Alpha King's territory?
My heart pounded in my chest as the scent drew nearer, my instincts screaming at me to find her. The tension in the room thickened, and I stood abruptly, startling my uncle.
“I sent for her,” he said calmly. “You should listen, hear her out. She may not be the enemy you think she is.”
I glanced at him briefly and moved towards the door, every muscle in my body taut with anticipation.
“Cleopatra…” I whispered under my breath, the sound barely audible. Her scent filled the air, swirling around me with such intensity that it drowned every other thought.
Nothing mattered right now except Cleopatra.
My feet carried me swiftly down the corridors of the palace, the scent growing stronger with each step. Did she come to clear her name or receive her punishment? Anger and desire fueled my pace as I skidded to a halt at the entrance to the guest wing.
There she was.
But it wasn't just her.
I froze, my eyes narrowing in fury as I spotted Cleopatra, her body entangled in an embrace with none other than Rob! My stomach twisted with rage at the sight of his arms wrapped around her, their bodies pressed together far too intimately.
Although Alex explained that they weren't mates like they had told me earlier but something entirely different, it didn't stop my wolf from snarling in anger.
Without thinking, without even a second to process, I moved. A growl erupted from my chest as I charged forward, fury fueling my every step. In one swift motion, I grabbed Rob by the back of his shirt and ripped him away from Cleopatra with a force that sent him crashing against the nearby wall.
Rob hit the ground with a grunt, stunned by the sudden attack, but I wasn't paying him any attention. My focus was entirely on Cleopatra, who stood frozen, her swollen eyes locked with mine, and for a moment, the world seemed to stop.
How long had she been crying to get her eyes all swollen like this?
“What the hell do you think you're doing?” She growled, her voice laced with fury. I grabbed her by the arm, dragging her away from Rob who had already gotten up and offered her a soft smile.
The guts.
Cleopatra winced at the tightness of my grip but didn't fight me off as though she expected me to act this way. She stumbled along behind me, her breath coming in short gasps. “Williams, wait—”
“Wait?” I snapped, my anger boiling over. “For what? For you to betray me again? For you to run off with him?
She slapped me hard across the face and I stopped suddenly, pulling her roughly into a secluded alcove. My face was inches away from hers, her eyes blazing with fury. The tension between us crackled like lightning, the air thick with unspoken words and unresolved emotions.
Cleopatra's gaze flickered, torn between guilt and something else—something that mirrored the storm of emotions raging inside me.
“You think I'm just going to stand by and watch you with him?” I snarled, my hand tightening around her arm. “You're mine, Cleopatra. My mate. Do you even understand what that means?”
“There's no explaining things to you because you obviously don't want to listen, so think whatever you want!” she yelled back and something inside me snapped.
Before I could stop myself, I crushed my lips against hers.
The kiss was raw and fierce, driven by equal parts anger and desire. Cleopatra gasped in surprise, but almost immediately, she responded, her body molding into mine as if it had always belonged there. Her hands flew up, gripping the front of my shirt as she kissed me back with the same intensity.
It was like an explosion, a release of all the tension, the pain, the confusion. Everything we had been holding back poured into the kiss. My hands moved to her waist, pulling her closer, pressing her body flush against mine. My wolf roared in satisfaction, finally feeling the touch of his mate.
For a moment, there was nothing but the heat between us, the world disappearing into the whirlwind of emotions. My anger, my need, my desperation—all of it melted away as our bodies collided.
But the reality came crashing back.
Cleopatra broke the kiss, pulling back sharply, her breath ragged. Her chest rose and fell with the same intensity, her eyes wide and filled with a mixture of regret and something deeper—something that mirrored the fire burning within me.
But my mind cleared, and the weight of our situation came slamming back down on me.
“What…what the hell are you doing here with him?” I asked, my voice low and dangerous.
Cleopatra swallowed and looked up, her expression cold and confident. “The Alpha King sent for me,” she stated simply.
“And you had to come with him?” I demanded, instantly regretting asking her that. She smiled softly and took a step back, but she didn't try to escape my grasp.
“What do you really want to know, Alpha Williams,” she asked calmly.
“Why did you do it? Explain it to me!” I roared, my frustration spilling over. “Because all I see is a woman who seduced me and nearly destroyed my pack!”
I thought she was going to break down, cry even but she didn't. She stood defiantly, her voice low and steady. “And you think that you didn't seduce me too? I had no choice! Alpha Kane used me!”
“When I realized he could be lying, I tried helping you. I thought fighting by your side would lessen the guilt. But it didn't and I'm sorry.”
My chest tightened, the weight of her words pressing down on me. I wanted to believe her—wanted to trust that she had been caught in a web of lies. But what if it's all her plan and I'll be falling for her schemes for the second time?
She went on and narrated everything to me. From her training, her missions, her oath to Kane and her recent discovery that she wasn't the one that killed Kane's father. “Do you think I wanted any of this to happen?” she whispered.
But before I could respond, a noise from down the hall, followed by an ear-splitting scream drew our attention.
