Ambush

Cleopatra's heart hammered against her ribs. A mark of the Night Wolves? I've heard of how deadly that clan is. One can only pray not to confront them alone.

The ear splitting roar sent shivers down her spine, pulling her out of her thoughts and back to the danger on the other side of the door.

Alpha Williams' surprised expression confirmed that she wasn't the only one caught off guard.
“What was that? What's with all the noise?” she said, her voice barely a whisper above the thundering noise echoing outside.

A tense silence hung in the air as Williams's wolf senses flared. His brow furrowed in anger. “Rogues,” he finally growled with a clenched fist.

Cleopatra's blood ran cold. This wasn't part of the plan. Beta Jack hadn't mentioned anything about a pretend attack, which meant that this is an actual rogue attack. She pushed down the ache in her head. This is not the time to crumble.

She stood up defiantly, ready to race outside and tear down every one of them on her path, angry that she hasn't had any time to herself to think properly.

Williams's phone rang just then and he picked up with a sense of urgency in his tone.
“Hold them off, I'll be with you shortly,” he said in response to the person on the other end and hung up, “This time,”he muttered to himself, his voice laced with a chilling coldness, “I'll make sure none of them ever gets to crawl out from their holes.”

He strode towards a hidden panel near the fireplace and brought out a sleek black pistol, although he always relied on his wolf whenever fighting.

“There's a secret passage behind the wardrobe,” he said, his voice a low, urgent command. “It leads out of the East Wing. Follow it and get to safety, I'll handle this. I still need you alive to answer my questions.”

Cleopatra stared at him in disbelief. “You want me to run? I don't back down from a fight and I certainly won't cower in a tunnel while others fight for their lives and dignity,” she retorted, her voice laced with defiance.

She staggered and Williams caught her effortlessly, “You're not fit for this, Cleopatra, the medicine hasn't even worn off fully,” he said impatiently, his eyes to the door.
“But..” she began, wanting to protest but Williams cut her off with a sharp look.

“No buts, Cleopatra. Just go. Now!”

He didn't give her a chance to argue. With a swift movement, he pushed her towards the wardrobe. She took a deep breath, knowing that arguing wouldn't help. He was right. She doesn't feel like her usual self since waking up. It's like her wolf is becoming more and more dormant.

She slid behind the heavy wooden structure, her heart pounding frantically against her ribs. She opened the passage, revealing a narrow dark tunnel. Taking a deep breath, she clutched a dagger, close to her chest, worried that her wolf might not be of any help if there was danger.

The tunnel was damp and narrow. The air hung heavy with the smell of mildew and earth. Cleopatra stumbled forward, relying on her sense of touch to make her way out of the dark tunnel. The events of the past few days kept her company as she trod forward.

Things would have played out differently if her pack hadn't interfered. What is this mark Alpha Williams spoke of? Why would she have the mark of the most deadly wolf clan on her back? And why hasn't she seen this mark on her body before?

After what felt like an eternity, a sliver of light appeared in the distance, she ran towards it like a thirsty deer, her legs screaming in protest. Finally, she emerged on the other side and soaked in the sudden light.

Cleopatra found herself in a small clearing deep within the forest surrounding the Stone Heart Pack territory.

She took a moment to catch her breath, adrenaline still coursing through her veins. Now what?

Should she just take the main entrance and go back to the pack house to fight side by side with Alpha Williams? Would that ease off the suspicions?

Just as she debated her next move, a low growl ripped through the silence. It was close. Why does it have to be today of all days? What kind of medicine did the doctor give that is still making her dizzy?

Gripping the dagger tightly, she cautiously stepped forward towards the pack house, her sense on high alert. The growl came again, this time followed by the unmistakable scent of wet dirty furs.

A shadow detached itself from the trees, revealing a hulking figure with glowing red eyes. Cleopatra rolled her eyes in frustration. If she could count the number of times she has seen rogues this week, it would be enough to send her on a trip to the Bahamas, she thought. The wolf's vicious snarl yanked her to face reality as it circled her, gauging her movements carefully.

With a deep breath, she lunged forward, aiming the dagger at the creature's chest.

The rogue reacted with a speed of light, swatting her attack away with a massive paw. Cleopatra stumbled backwards, landing hard on the first floor.
Wait what just happened? She couldn't believe that this rogue could avoid her attack let alone push her to the floor. Is this still the effect of the medicine? She thought as she stumbled up, her visions blurring.

The rogue loomed closer as she shook her head, trying to wave the dizziness off. Suddenly, a piercing scream echoed through the clearing. Cleopatra turned towards the sound. A new wolf stood between her and the rogue, its silver fur catching the moonlight. Cleopatra could swear that she has never laid eyes on this wolf before but why does it seem so familiar? Its movements were swift and deadly as it charged towards the rogue.

The fight was a blur of snarls, growls and flashes of silver as Cleopatra watched through half closed eyes. The silver wolf had a supernatural aura around it as if it was one of the mythical creatures from tales.

Within moments, the fight was over. The rogue lay unmoving.

The wolf stood over her and she got a chance to study it closely. Its furs shimmered with an otherworldly sheen, midnight black with streaks of silver that pulsed with an inner light. It's piercing blue eyes locked with hers for a fleeting moment and Cleopatra could feel her strength, coming back and her wolf stirring up like it's been in a deep slumber.

Before she could even react, the wolf dashed off into the night, leaving a trail of burning questions in its wake.

What could that be? And why did she feel such a strange connection to it?

Suddenly, a new, deeper growl came from behind her, sending shivers down her spine. “This time around I'm ready you motherfuckers! Bring it on,” she screamed into the air.

Cleopatra spun around, her heart hammering against her ribs. A shadowy figure emerged from the trees and as it stepped into the light, Cleopatra’s breath hitched in her throat.

It was a massive wolf, its fur the color of night, its eyes glowing with an eerie green light. This wasn't just any wolf. The unmistakable mark - a crescent moon intertwined with a howling wolf adorned its shoulder.

That's the Night Wolf Alpha!
