His perfect distraction

Cleopatra's POV (cont.)

“What?!” I asked, confusion laced in my tone. What does he mean by a log book instead of the book of Alphas? I groaned and slapped myself hard across the face.

Why didn't I remember to check? I did find the covers different from the last time. How could I have made such a stupid mistake.

“Where the fuck is your head at, Cleopatra? Are you getting relaxed? You seem to have forgotten how important this mission is. What the heck have you been doing all these times that you were this reckless?!” he yelled loudly.

I flinched and took the phone away from my ear. How did I make such a mistake?

“I'm sorry, Beta Jack. It won't happen again. I'll take care of this and get you the book before this week's over,” I said in a firm voice.

That didn't ease things up on his end. He kept on ranting and scolding me. This is not what I need tonight.

“Your bath is ready,” Alex called from the door.

Fuck! I muttered to myself.

“Who's voice is that? Where are you Cleopatra?” he demanded angrily.

“I'm at the Stone Heart Pack. Where else can I be?” I replied immediately, careful not to let him detect any lie in my voice.

“And a man is running your bath?” he asked suspiciously.

“No, I'm downstairs, maybe the maid told him to inform me,” I replied, my voice steady.

He seemed to be digesting it. I know Beta Jack. He won't let this slide quickly. He would want to probe further.

Alex stepped out and I signaled him not to say a word. “I will take care of this, I promise. Just give me time.”

“You should be grateful I talked the Alpha out of punishing you for this. Make sure you get this sorted out and Cleopatra? Get your head back into this mission!” he growled and hung up.

I didn't realize I'd been holding my breath until he hung up. “Phew! That was intense,” I said out loud.

“Are you in some kind of trouble?” he asked.

I shook my head and entered the bathroom. I got into the bath and it was so relaxing. I need to be free of myself and the thoughts of this mission tonight. With that, I submerged myself into the water.

Williams’ POV

Why is Renee acting like she saw a ghost? I wondered as she stepped into the office, a distant look in her eyes. I called out to her twice before I got her attention.

This is the first time I'm seeing her this way. What happened?

“I saw Cleopatra!” She blurted out. That caught me by surprise. I thought she would have gone back by now.

“With the human boy?” I asked, trying not to sound concerned. It really bothered me that she was with him.

Renee explained that Cleopatra helped Smith’s wife deliver her baby and all I could think of was if she was there with the human boy.

Why am I this way? Even my wolf wanted to pounce on the man earlier but I pulled him back. Why does she have this much effect on both of us? Does it have anything to do with sharing a bed with her or could it be her powers at play?

“Alpha Williams!” Renee called out. I could see the look of disappointment in her eyes. Was it meant for me?

“You're raising your voice, Renee,” I warned, trying to remind her who she's talking to.

“I'm sorry Alpha,” she said, her head slightly bowed, “I didn't mean to.”

“Are we still meeting Smith tomorrow?” I demanded, my voice resolute.

“Yes Alpha,” she answered.

I could see her fidgeting, like she's contemplating on letting me in on something she discovered. I watched her carefully, sighing when she started pacing around.

“Do you have anything else to share?” I asked, obviously aware she was dying to say something. Does it have something to do with Cleopatra? I rolled my eyes. It's always about Cleopatra with her.

“This might sound crazy Alpha, but when I dropped Cleopatra off at her friend's place, I..”

“Wait, did you just say you dropped her off at her friend's place? The guy she was with earlier?” I asked, getting up from my chair.

“Alpha please can you listen for just one second without being this way about Cleopatra? What is she doing to you anyway?” She asked, running a finger through her hair.

You have no idea what she does to me, I thought to myself. I growled at her and she whimpered.
“Continue,” I said, controlling myself from reacting in that way again.

She sighed and continued. “When I was pulling away, I could swear I saw two wolves standing beside her. One on her left and the other on her right. But it was just momentarily, because when I looked again, I didn't see them,” she finished, looking more confused than she did when she walked into the office.

“Which was by the left and which was by the right between the silver and black wolves?” I asked her carefully, my gaze distant. If Renee caught a glimpse of both wolves it could only mean that our fears might not happen. Maybe her black wolf isn't dying after all.

“I never said they were silver and black,” she replied, looking at me curiously, “how come you know that, Alpha?” She asked.

I got up, eager to go back to the pack and confront Cleopatra. What does she think she's doing, parading herself in the city, knowing she could be kidnapped. Wait, am I genuinely concerned about her right now?

“We should head back now,” I whispered in a low tone.

“Alpha, how do you know about her wolves? Does it mean that I wasn't hallucinating earlier?” She asked, her gaze fixed on me.

“Renee, there are..things you shouldn't know for now. Maybe when the time is right, I'll tell you all about it. So for now, let's drive back to the pack. I have a question for Cleopatra,” I growled, my voice dropping low.

“You won't find her in the pack,” Renee stated, as soon as I started walking towards the door in hurried strides.

“What do you mean?”

“She's not coming back tonight,” she replied. I felt something I can't place my hands on surge within me.

“She went back to her pack?” I asked, already knowing the answer to that. But maybe I'm wrong, I thought.

“She's staying over with the human,” she replied, staring directly into my eyes.

She wouldn't dare. I only had one thought in my head right now.

And it's not a pretty one.
