The girl with Two Wolves

Cleopatra's POV

Is this a dream? Where am I?

I stared up ahead and took in the picture. It was like a scene that was torn out of a fantasy book. Could this be real?

I know I’ve never been here, so why does everything and everyone here feel so familiar? Somehow. It felt like a place I knew like the back of my hand.

I saw a woman with eyes as green as emeralds, her gaze filled with love and a power that gave me comfort. She called out to me. It came out as a soft and sweet echo.

“Shadow.”

Somehow I felt safe and at peace as I let her grab my arms. The grass felt soft and cool against my feet and the air felt warm.

All of a sudden the air crackled with tension and the trees seemed to close in on us.

There were shrill outcries as people ran. The fantasy world was soon thrown into chaos. Figures emerged from the shadows, taller than any human. Their eyes glow an eerie red, and their form inhuman, like creatures of myth, a nightmare given flesh.

The loud outcries shook me to my bones. Some of the people fought back but it was pointless, they were being subdued.

I saw the woman with emerald green eyes turn to look at me. There was no warmth in her gaze anymore but pure fear.

“Run Shadow. And don’t look back,” she whispered in a terrified voice. “Run!” She yelled at me. I couldn’t get my feet to move. It felt like they were rooted to the ground.

One of the creatures caught up to her as she pushed me down into a corner. It tore her up in the most gruesome way. Her lifeless eyes stared up at me and I jumped out.

“Momma!!” I screamed. Why did it feel so natural calling her mother? She didn’t look anything like my mother.

I lunged at the creature that devoured her. The battle was a blur of teeth and claws, of grunts and snarls. When it was over, I stood there, panting furiously. The creature lay still.

“Cleopatra!!” A voice broke out in shock. I whipped my head around. Renee? What is she doing here?

“What have you done!” She yelled.
I looked around and I was back at the Stone Heart Pack. I stood still, trembling, looking down at my bloodied hands.

A cold fear crept into me. What have I done? And who’s blood is this?

The metallic scent of blood filled the air as I stared up at Renee’s terrified face and down at my hands, my heart pounding in my chest. The blood wasn’t from fighting some creature, but from my own body.

My legs buckled beneath me and I crumpled to the ground, a horrifying realization dawning on me. Did I just cut myself? I looked down at my thighs, at the claw marks. Why did I do this to myself?

Panic surged through me. What was happening to me? What is this power I feel awakening within?

A loud bang echoed through the room, jolting me back to reality. The door burst open, and Alpha Williams rushed in, his face etched with concern and dread. Behind him, the pack doctor, followed closely.

“Cleopatra!!” Williams exclaimed, rushing to my side. He knelt beside me, his eyes filled with confusion and worry. “What is going on?” He asked.

Renee stumbled back, her eyes wide with shock. “I-I don’t know. I just left for a few minutes when she fell asleep. Came back in to check on her and met her like this!” She narrated.

“Why did you do this to yourself?!” Williams demanded, his voice hoarse.

I tried to speak, but my throat felt dry and constructed. The room began to spin, the metallic scent of blood filling my senses , making me dizzy.

“Eugene!” Williams called out, his voice laced with urgency.

The pack doctor hurried over, his brow furrowed as he examined me. Before he could speak, the darkness closed in, and I succumbed to unconsciousness.

Williams’ POV

My heart was pounding in my chest when I bursted into the room. The sight that greeted me was a nightmare. Cleopatra sat on the floor, blood was smeared across her hands and thighs, and Renee stood frozen in terror.

My mind raced. Why did she do this to herself? Could it be? I exchanged glances with Eugene as he examined her. His brow furrowed in confusion but there was a glint of realization.

“I’ve never seen anything like this,” he muttered, his voice barely audible.

I looked at Cleopatra’s unconscious face and a cold dread settled in my stomach. What was happening to her?

Eugene got up and turned to me.
“It’s happening,” he whispered, “the awakening.”

“I thought you said it won’t happen till triggered,” I asked quietly, looking down at Cleopatra.

“Maybe the silver bullet triggered it? I’m really not sure but all I can say for sure is that she's awakening.”

“She’s probably more confused than we are. We need to tell her the truth.” Eugene said and moved to check Cleopatra’s pulse.

“Awakening from what?” Renee asked, confusion etched in her gaze.

I gave a heavy sigh. “It’s a long, confusing story. Get some maids ready to clean her up,” I ordered, leaving no room for more explanation.

As soon as the door closed behind Renee, I turned to Eugene. “What can we do? Doesn’t she need help?”

He looked at me like I’m spewing nonsense and chuckled. “This is a battle within. We can’t do much for her at this point. There is a high chance she won’t even remember when she wakes up,” he stated.

“She won’t remember?” I probed further. “Is that even possible?”

“The chances are high. She’s battling within herself. She keeps pushing it back to the background of her mind. It’s slowing down the process. So when she wakes up, it will appear to her like she had a nightmare.”

“Okay, so we should tell her then!” I replied.

“We can’t do that. She has to find it out herself.”

“It’s really complicated,” Eugene continued, “You know the pain of our first transformation when we get our wolves? It’s as if she’s experiencing this all over again but this time, with two wolves.”

I froze. Two wolves?

“What do you mean?” I asked, confused.

“Wondering how she made it? Why she is still alive despite the lethal silver?” He paused to look up at my face. “She has the white wolf. That’s the only explanation. And it’s the white wolf that is awakening.”

I stared at him like he just lost his mind.

“I thought you said she’s from the extinct bloodline of the Night Wolves previous Alpha?” I asked, utterly confused. “You know who the sworn enemies of the Night Wolves are? The White Wolves! And they are extinct! Cleared by the Night Wolves!” I barked angrily, frustrated at how the events were unfolding.

The fact that I don’t have control over the situation is making me more angry.

“Oh yes I said so,” Eugene replied, A little absentmindedly, “That can only mean one thing. Her mother was a White Wolf,” he stated and threw his hands up.

“What? Is that even possible?” I asked, trying to make sense of the confusing events that keep happening around Cleopatra.

Just then, the door bursts open and reveals a very angry Alpha Kane, with Renee gasping for air behind him. Does he know about this? Is he hiding it from Cleopatra?

“Get your hands off her,” he growled.
