Twisted Past

Williams’ POV

Renee and I exchanged a worried glance. We knew something must be wrong. Why would Cleopatra run away from me?

My wolf howled in pain and rejection. Why does it affect me so much anyway? I couldn’t just leave her out there alone. I have to do something.

“We need to find her,” I said, my voice barely above a whisper.

Renee nodded. “I know. But where do we start? It’s just the two of us. I’ll suggest we go back for now, at least we know she’s alive and well,” she replied.

I hesitated, running a hand through my hair in frustration while pacing around. I still couldn’t come to terms with the fact that she ran away from me. What have they done to her? Her eyes were filled with such cold intensity that sent chills down my spine.

But somehow, I felt a sense of relief. She was safe and alive, at least for now. But I wanted her close. I want her in my arms.

“Let’s go, Alpha. It’s getting late,” Renee said softly and we moved out of the forest.

We got to Alex’s driveway and got into the car. The hotel staff must have left after waiting for a while. Good for him.

The drive back to the pack was filled with a mix of relief and unease. Cleopatra appeared safe, but the mystery surrounding her behavior remained unsolved.

As we pulled into the pack’s territory, I couldn’t help but think about all that happened today. Had Cleopatra really chosen to run away from me? Or someone manipulated her to do so? Or has something else happened?

I sighed deeply because I knew there would be no rest for me until I had answers. I got down and ordered for Eugene to come to my office. He might have some answers to the lingering questions in my head.

The soft knock on the door had me jerking up. I didn’t know I slept off while waiting for the pack doctor in my office.

“Come in,” I said, my voice husky.

“You asked for me to come see you?” He said as soon as he walked in.

“Yes Eugene, please sit,” I said, gesturing to the chair opposite mine.

I took a deep breath and clasped my hands tighter. “You know how Cleopatra has been missing for more than a week now?”

“Yes. Did you find her?” He asked.

“Well, not exactly. I did see her but she seemed…different,” I said, struggling to put the feeling I got off her in words.

“What do you mean by different?” He asked curiously, sitting upright.

“Well, for one her eyes seemed cold and she ran away from me. I just don’t understand, if the vampires kidnapped her why is she walking freely? Why isn’t she back? Do you think she was hypnotized?” I demanded all at once, my knuckles white from clenching my fists too tight.

“Slow down, Williams,” he said, calling me by my name for the first time in a long while. Eugene has been the pack doctor for as long as I can remember, even during my father’s time although he was younger back then.

He’s well above 65 by now and knows a lot of things that I don’t know. I took a deep breath and stared directly at him, like a child waiting for candies.

“They can’t harm her or hypnotize her,” he said plainly and I furrowed my brows in confusion. What does he mean by that?

“Why?” I asked.

“It’s a long story. Cleopatra’s mother was the Alpha of the White wolves, the most sacred of all the clans. Guess who her allies were?” He asked, pausing to study my expression.

“The vampires?” I said, unsure of the answer and he nodded.

“You see, the leader of the vampires, Lucien, was her best friend. They were so close that vampires started living in their pack. Some of them even found out that their mates were vampires. Of course when the Alpha king found out, he wasn’t pleased. Rumor had it back then that they wanted to join forces and destroy the realm,” he stopped talking once again and asked me for a glass of water which I poured for him.

After a while, he cleared his throat and continued talking. “It got worse when Cleopatra’s mother found out that her mate was the Night wolf alpha. I don’t really know the rest of the story but the Great War broke out when Cleopatra’s mother found out that her mate had been killed and her clan, together with those of the vampires were under attack. She sacrificed herself and locked them up in her territory. Till date, no one can find the entrance.”

“I thought all the great Alphas came together, locked and killed all the vampires then put the rest to everlasting sleep,” I said, questioning everything I was told while I was younger.

“Oh no. You think they could have succeeded?” He said with a wide chuckle. “The white wolves are formidable and joint with the vampires? Half of the Alphas would have been toast if they tried.”

“Then why haven't the vampires appeared all these while?” I asked, intrigued by the new discovery.

“Because they couldn’t. Only the Alpha or one with the Alpha blood can break the wall. My suspicion? Cleopatra must have done that unconsciously,” he said, confirming my initial suspicion, although I didn’t know all of this back then.

“Woah. This is a lot to take in. Why did Cleopatra seem different? Why did she run away from me? Why can’t she come back?” I asked, fully immersed in the conversation.

Eugene paused, his eyes filled with thought. “I’m not very sure what the reason could be but there’s something else that might explain her behavior.”

I leaned forward, my attention fully focused on him. “What is it?”

“You know how we discovered that the white wolf is overpowering the other? And that the balance is unstable?” He asked and I nodded.

“Perhaps they’re healing her. That could explain why she decided to stay back.”

“But why would she run away from me?” I pressed. “I’m not her enemy.”

“Maybe she discovered that she’s been poisoned all these while like we thought back then and can’t trust anyone for now. She would be very powerful and viscous if the healing is still in process so maybe she was also trying to protect you. From herself,” Eugene explained with a distant look in his eyes.

“We need to find her,” I said, my voice filled with a certain determination. “At all costs.”

“You’re wrong Alpha. You can’t find her, she will come back when she’s ready and let’s pray that she doesn’t have any grudge against you,” he added, his face a mix of fear.

“What do you mean?” I asked. “Why would she have a grudge against me?”

He stared at me with a blank expression in his eyes. “Let’s just hope for the sake of our pack that she doesn’t.”

The way he said it chilled me to the bones. Will she become that dangerous?
