Thread of Fate

Williams’ POV

I watched Cleopatra as she trashed around in the late hours of the morning. The scene caused a mixture of emotions to rouse up within me but it was mostly fear.

Fear for Cleopatra.

As she twisted and turned, I tried to wake her up but she wouldn't budge. I watched her hair shift colors like someone was messing with a switch that controls the color that should be on her hair.

It was unsettling, watching the colors ripple in response to something happening deep in her sleep.

What could she be dreaming about? I grabbed a towel and dabbed the sweat off her face and neck but it was no use. My hand brushed her trembling skin, but it was like trying to calm a storm with a whisper. My efforts made no difference.

I just sat by her side, feeling helpless as I watched her groan in her sleep, my wolf stirred within me, whimpering at the sight. We could sense her fear, confusion, but there was nothing we could do to fight it from the outside.

Helplessness was a feeling I could never get used to.

I held her hand tighter and felt her jerking nonstop. I willed myself and pulled her up sharply, hoping that the force would snap her out of whatever dream or nightmare she was deep into.

She woke up with a start, eyes wide with confusion.

I couldn't stand the accusations behind her eyes when she asked about Renee so I gave in and let her come with me to the chase. We got into the car and drove off to the address where the signal went off.

I just hope Renee hasn't gotten herself into something more than she can handle. She seemed so sure of this mission like she would break down if I didn't let her handle it.

Some of my men were already waiting outside when we rushed out and got into the car, the air thick with unspoken tension. Cleopatra's presence beside me felt heavier than ever, and yet I couldn't get her out of my sight.

In due time, I will have her open up to me about all the visions and changes that had occurred. Why couldn't she trust me yet to tell me about them anyway?

As we drove towards the last location where Renee's signal had gone off, my mind raced. Renee had seemed so sure of herself, her determination unshakable. I know she is smart and strong, but I can't help the unease that tugged at my heart.

I glanced at Cleopatra, her eyes stayed focused ahead, her jaw tight with anxiety. I urged the driver to go faster and he pressed his foot harder on the gas.

We got to what looked like an abandoned apartment complex with dilapidated structures all over and my nose caught a faint scent of Renee.

“Search everywhere. Look for anything that could point us towards the direction they went,” I ordered my men and the search began.

I watched Cleopatra from the corner of my eyes, sniffing like she was onto something. I followed her into one of the buildings and sure enough, we found the tracker crushed on the floor.

“I can still feel their presence,” she whispered more to herself than me. “They've not been gone too long, we can still track them down.”

“Can you track them down with the scent you caught here?” I asked and she nodded.

“We go east.”

Seeing her confidence and new ability made me proud, but the thought that she isn't mine swapped the excitement away.

“Let's move,” I said, signaling to the rest of my men. We got into the car and drove off towards the east. Cleopatra was focused, her eyes narrowing as she sniffed the air, her head turning eastward as if some invisible string was pulling her in that direction.

“Stop,” she said.

We pulled up at a clearing, the trees parting to reveal an old, rundown factory that looked like an abandoned pack house. Her steps were quick but calculated, and I followed without hesitation.

She abruptly stopped in front of the building and I signaled to the others to halt.

“They’re inside,” she whispered, her voice low but filled with certainty.

“Are you sure?” I asked quietly, my voice steady and she nodded. Just then, a beep alert popped up and I stared at the tracker in shock. We were at the right location!

“How do I know how many of them are here and how we can attack?” I muttered to myself quietly.

Cleopatra closed her eyes for a moment, then opened them slowly, her irises glowing faintly. “Six…no, five now,” she murmured and my head shot up in surprise.

Is this part of her new ability?

“Alright,” I said, glancing at the men around us. “We move in quietly. I want as many casualties as possible.”

Cleopatra glanced at me, her gaze unreadable. She made to move in with the team but I pulled her back. “We stay here, just in case any reinforcements show up.”

Her expression was conflicted but she released a resigned sigh and stood by my side, scanning the area with graceful predatory eyes. I couldn't help feeling aroused looking at her.

God she is so beautiful. Everything she does intrigues me, pokes at my senses and makes me giddy on the inside. And yet the moon goddess is unfair by not making her my second chance mate.

Before long, we heard screams and sounds of struggle inside the building. My instincts flared, my wolf pacing anxiously within me. Cleopatra stood at my side, her body tense, her eyes sharp and focused as though she could see through the walls.

The sounds slowly faded, replaced by muffled groans and heavy footsteps. My men were efficient, and I knew they would be out soon.

I exhaled a breath I didn't realize I'd been holding when the door to the building creaked open revealing six of my men with Renee right beside them, her eyes blazing with a defiance I've never seen in them before.

I felt a flood of relief and pride. She is strong, determined, and more capable than I sometimes gave her credit for. But my relief was short-lived as I noticed something odd in the scene unfolding before me.

Renee wasn't just walking out of that factory. She was walking protectively in front of someone. A growl escaped my mouth and my fists clenched when I saw the tattoo on his arm.

It can't be.
