The Unseen Friend or Foe
Kane’s POV (cont.)
“How long have you been standing there?” I growled and Beta Jack emerged from behind the door, his face grim.
“I Just came by not quite long, Alpha,” Jack replied with a blank expression on his face.
“Why are you here?” I asked, looking him over suspiciously, wondering if he overheard or just pretending he didn’t hear anything.
I know Jack is loyal to me and would never betray me but there is also one thing I’m certain of. Jack would do anything to protect this pack and everyone in it. That’s why I don’t include him in most of my plans.
Jack hesitated for a moment, his eyes darting around the office. “I came to tell you that Cleopatra called. She won’t be able to make it back tonight,” he replied, and took a step back, away from me.
Instead of the outburst Jack was expecting, I broke out in laughter, clutching my stomach like I was in pain. Is this her way of cutting me off? Is she finally on Williams’ side? I will make her regret this!
I stopped laughing and my face turned deadly cold.
“Did she say why?” I asked.
“She..um..she said that she was attacked and admitted in the hospital,” he stammered. He knew that would piss me off and it did. She was obviously lying. We all know that our kind heals faster than humans.
What could she be hiding?
“What hospital is it?” I growled, my voice dangerously low.
“She didn’t say, Alpha.”
I was beyond furious. She dared disobey my order and betray me? She ruined my plans!
“Did she tell you about the attack? How she went solo and killed all the men I sent?” I demanded angrily.
“Yes she did. That is the next thing I wanted to report to you. She told me that she wasn’t in control, her wolf was and she couldn’t stop her.”
Could it be her other wolf? I thought silently.
Change of plans. I will have to call Rider back to drop the attack.
I will have to tame her myself.

Cleopatra’s POV
I pinched my eyebrow in frustration. I just can’t leave Alex here. Beta Jack called earlier, yelling and demanding that I come back, even my alpha called as well. I have never disobeyed them but not today.
I quickly filled beta Jack in on the attack and the role I played in it. I just had to get it off my chest once and for all. I purposely left out the part that had to do with Alpha Williams finding out about the spies and his plan to use them against my Alpha.
That would be my ticket back because I’m damn sure Alpha Kane is furious right now.
Alex needs me here. I can’t leave him. Not after the shocking news he gave me. Who called him and why? It was obviously a trap to lure him out.
Why would anybody want to hurt him?
The only people that knew about Alex are Alpha Williams and Renee. Could it be that he got so angry when I said I was going to see Alex last night that he arranged for him to be abducted or killed?
No it can’t be Alpha Williams. He had his own share of chaos this morning. Alex would be the least of his worries.
Could it be the same person that dropped me that note?
I turned my phone back on and just then, Alpha Williams’ call came in. How convenient.
“Where are you?” He growled as soon as I picked the call.
“You don’t own me,” I said, my voice calm and defiant. Something about the way he sounded ticked me off. I refuse to let him control me.
I am Cleopatra. Strong, beautiful, willed Cleopatra. Willaims DeLuca doesn’t own me.
He sighed loudly. I can practically imagine him, running his fingers through his disheveled hair angrily. I bit down on my lips as I remembered last night and how tangled my fingers were in his hair, pulling it softly while I moaned.
Stop it Cleopatra, I cautioned myself sternly.
“I don’t own you but you’re a guest in my pack, so forgive me if I’m being unreasonable right now asking you where you are. This is already past midnight Cleopatra,” he said in a soft controlled tone.
That did the trick.
I found myself telling him about Alex and how I’m in the hospital, the events of earlier threatening to crush my perfectly controlled emotions.
“Do you need me to come over?” He asked, catching me off guard. Would he really do that? Or is he just bluffing because he suspects I would decline?
I can’t seem to figure him out.
“Cleopatra? Did you hear me?” He asked, when I didn’t respond to his question.
“Yes..I mean no. Don’t worry, I’ve got this under control,” I reassured him.
“Are you planning on sleeping in the hospital tonight?” He asked curiously.
“Um, yeah. I don’t really have a choice,” I replied sadly. I could really use a warm bath and a soft bed right now, my whole body ached. To make matters worse, my stomach grumbled, reminding me that I needed to eat.
I think he heard the noise my stomach made.
“I’ve sent a message across. Go to the hotel, you’ll be taken care of. I’ll meet you there in the morning,” he said and hung up before I could object.
Hate to admit but Alpha Williams knows how to treat a lady right. Too bad he’s a tyrant right?
Alex was fast asleep. I didn’t want to wake him up. I gently dropped a kiss on his forehead and left the room. I made sure to tell the nurse that I’ll be back in the morning before exiting the hospital.
The walk to where I parked my bike was a quiet one with different thoughts running through my mind all at once.
“Shit! Where’s the key?” I muttered to myself as I searched my pockets for the key to the bike. Where could it be?
I thought about going inside to search for it but decided against it. The sharp scent of isopropyl alcohol and other cleaning agents that is used in the hospital was making me nauseous already.
I dipped my hands into my pocket and decided to walk. The hotel shouldn’t be that far from here.
Suddenly, a hand clamped over my mouth with a handkerchief and before I could resist, I found myself weak. I couldn’t move a muscle.
Is this the same person that left me a note? Why are they striking now and not while I was unconscious on the road?
A gut-wrenching feeling washed over me as I faded into unconsciousness, the last thing I saw being a pair of cold gray, menacing eyes.
