Echoes of Deceit

Williams’ POV

The room remained eerily silent, the council members frozen in a collective gasp as Marcus’s laughter echoed around them. It was a chilling sound, devoid of the relief or remorse one might expect. His expression was a mask of cold amusement, as if he relished the turmoil he had created.

I locked eyes with him, my pulse quickening. “Why are you laughing?” I demanded, my voice strained with controlled fury.

Marcus wiped a smirk from his lips, his gaze unwavering. “Oh, Alpha,” he said, his tone dripping with mock pity. “You’ve been so desperate to find a scapegoat, haven’t you?”

The room shifted uneasily, the council members casting furtive glances at one another. Marcus’s calm demeanor only deepened the suspicion hanging in the air.

“Enough games,” I snapped, stepping closer. “Tell me what you’re hiding or face the consequences.”

His eyes glittered with something dangerous, a spark that made my blood boil with renewed fury. “Do you really think you’re ready for the truth?” he taunted. “The truth about your precious pack, about everything you thought you knew?”

Renee suddenly bursted through the door and surveyed the scene. Her hand subtly moved towards her bow, her eyes never leaving Marcus.

I could sense her readiness, her anger simmering beneath the surface. She was waiting for a signal, for the moment when she could make her move if necessary.

Marcus continued, his voice lowering to a menacing whisper. “You think you know betrayal, but you haven’t seen anything yet. Next time you want to learn about betrayal, you come and ask me! My father was betrayed by the elders of this pack a long time ago. My family should have been next in line but your dear father bought them off!”

“What do you mean by that? Where is this nonsense coming from?” I asked, feeling the heat rising. His family as long as I know are not from the Alpha bloodline. What nonsense is he spewing right now?

“Spare me the look Williams, you deserve my betrayal for all your family did to mine. And to think you would be the next Alpha king? I would rather die than watch that happen,” he growled, his voice cold and spiteful.

Marcus?

I was still battling with denial. Who fed him all this nonsense and why?

“You are being unreasonable Marcus,” one of the council members growled at him from his seat. Your family has never been of the Alpha bloodline but falls under Omegas. what is the meaning of this nonsense?”

“I know that you all were in on this. To rip me and my family off our birthright but not while I'm still breathing,” he sneered angrily like he had lost his mind.

“Is that why you sold information to our enemy?” Renee growled, making her way slowly towards him.

“I can't stoop to that level, beta. I am the rightful heir, the rightful Alpha of the Stone Heart Pack and I do not have to be a rat to take back what rightfully belongs to me. I would take it back on my own terms and trust me, you all are not prepared for it!”

Before I could respond, Marcus’s hand shot to the pocket of his shorts, pulling out a small, silver device. He pressed a button, and the lights in the room flickered and went out, plunging us into darkness.

A murmur of panic erupted among the council members. I instinctively reached for my phone, using its flashlight to cut through the gloom. When the lights came back on, Marcus was gone.

“Search the pack house!” I barked, my voice cutting through the chaos. “Lock it down. He couldn't have gone far.”

The council members scrambled into action, their faces masks of confusion and agitation. Renee stayed close, her gaze scanning the room with sharp intensity.

“Alpha, we need to consider the possibility that he might have had help,” Renee said, her voice steady despite the chaos. “This could be part of a larger plan.”

“Aren't you forgetting something? Marcus is not behind the ambush which means that we haven't caught the rat yet,” I muttered

Marcus’s disappearance wasn’t just about him fleeing, it was a deliberate act meant to throw us off balance. His words, his actions—they all pointed to a deeper conspiracy.

“Set up a perimeter,” I ordered. “We need to find him and uncover the truth before this gets any worse.”

As the search began, I couldn’t shake the feeling of dread that settled over me. Marcus’s laughter and cryptic words had thrown everything into disarray. If he was part of something bigger, then the threat to the pack was far greater than I’d imagined.

I paced the room, my thoughts a whirlwind. Who else might be involved? What had Marcus meant by “we are not prepared”? And what has he been up to? More importantly, who is feeding him all these lies?

The sound of footsteps approaching made me turn. A young guard entered, breathless and wide-eyed. “Alpha, we found something.”

I followed him to a small, cluttered room at the end of the left hallway. The room was in disarray, papers scattered on the floor. In the center of the mess was a single item: a leather-bound notebook with a strange emblem embossed on the cover.

I picked up the notebook, my fingers tracing the emblem—a serpent coiled around a dagger. It was a symbol I didn’t recognize, but it felt ominous. As I opened the cover, a folded piece of paper fell out.

Renee picked it up and unfolded it. The message inside was brief, scrawled in hurried handwriting:

"The game is far from over. Trust no one. The true enemy is closer than you think.”

I looked up, my resolve hardening. Marcus’s departure was just the beginning. What game? The one he's plotting or an entirely different one? What does he mean by my true enemy? Didn't he just announce that he is my enemy?

I turned to Renee, my expression grim. “Prepare for anything. We need to be ready for whatever comes next. This is only the beginning.”

Renee nodded, determination in her eyes. “I’ll get the team ready. We’ll find him.”

As I left the office, the weight of the situation pressed heavily on me. The pack’s future was uncertain, and the true scale of the betrayal was still unknown. I could only hope that we would uncover the truth before it was too late.

The hunt for Marcus and the elusive enemy had begun, and with it, the fight for the pack’s survival. And mine.
