The Bite
Cleopatra’s POV
Lucien stood up swiftly, his gaze sharp as he locked eyes with Rob. “What is it?”
Rob stepped aside, catching his breath. “You need to come and see for yourself. Something…unexpected right outside the walls.”
I felt a shiver run down my spine. What could possibly be happening now? What if they are under attack because of the stretch I caused on the barrier?
Without another word, Lucien marched out of the room, and I followed closely behind him, my heart racing. Rob stayed at my side, his face tense with worry.
I could feel the weight of something heavy in the air as we descended the stairs and went outside. I briefly looked over at the hallway where I had seen the door and to my greatest shock, there was no door!
When we stepped outside and got closer to the wall, I froze in my tracks.
Just right outside, there was a familiar face, one that had hunted me since I came here. One that I have a grudge against. Alpha Williams.
Surrounding him were a dozen wolves. Fiercely looking warriors. They just stood right outside, staring directly at us but they couldn’t see us.
“What are they doing?” Rob asked no one in particular.
“He is searching for me,” I replied. “He is a tyrant and I have a mission to kill him,” I said, my voice low and menacing.
“Those aren’t the eyes of a tyrant,” Lucien said carefully.
“You don’t know him as much as I do. He killed my friend,” I growled.
“The problem is that they are close to the wall. No one has even been this close to the wall. Could it be because of the stretch?” Rob asked worriedly and Lucien shook his head.
“No. Something pulled him here,” he said and looked at me.
“You think I would do that?” I said, raising an eyebrow.
“I didn’t say that. Maybe his wolf can feel you here,” he replied cryptically and turned around to leave. “Let’s get back to the house, they can’t get in or even see us anyway,” he said and Rob turned to follow him.
I stood longer, staring into Alpha Williams' eyes as he desperately surveyed the area. Why is he looking for me?
“Search every corner!” he ordered, his voice carrying authority. His eyes landed on me briefly and my heart nearly stopped.
I wanted nothing more than to run into his arms and wrap my hands around his neck and kiss…no, twist it.
“Are you coming?” I heard Rob saying to me and turned to follow him but not before stealing more glances at Alpha Williams. Am I being crazy for wanting his lips on mine amidst all these?
We got back into the house and Lucien looked at me, his expression stern. “You have to be careful who you trust, child. That man right there is not your enemy,” he said and started going upstairs.
I know Alpha Williams more than he does. Hasn’t he been literally living under a rock all this time? What does he know about people and trust?
I followed him immediately, leaving Rob behind. He still had a lot to tell me.
“When can I go home?” I asked as soon as I caught up with him.
“What do you mean? You are home!” he replied, raising his voice slightly.
“You know what I mean. I can’t stay here forever.”
“Who says you can’t?” he asked and stopped walking.
“I have a mission, Lucien and I can’t leave without completing it.” I said, staring back at him.
“And does this mission have anything to do with the man outside our walls?” he demanded.
“It’s more complicated than that but I promise to return as soon as my mission is complete,” I replied firmly.
He studied me carefully and then shook his head lightly. “Very well then. If that’s what you want. But you must stay until your wolves are fully healed,” he said and resumed walking.
“Healed? How do I even have two wolves?” I asked curiously.
“Yes, your wolves are dying. You couldn’t change earlier. They are being poisoned and yes you have two wolves because your parents are both Alphas. Their union was unlikely, it had never happened before,” he replied.
“What kind of poison?” I asked. I need to know so I would be careful and learn what to look out for.
“All I can say is that it’s a substance. You shouldn’t be taking any vial from anyone, no matter who it is,” he cautioned and I nodded.
As Lucien’s words sank in, a cold dread settled in my chest. The warning from Alpha Kane replayed in my mind, now clearer than ever. Alpha Williams had offered me something after I was warned. Could it be?
I followed Lucien silently, my thoughts spinning in every direction. Two wolves—one from each of my parents, both powerful Alphas.
We reached the top of the stairs, and Lucien walked towards a door I hadn’t noticed before. He hesitated for a moment before pushing it open, revealing a room with just a single bed and a mirror in the center. There were no windows.
“This is where you’ll be staying for the healing process,” he said and ushered me in. I was drawn to my reflection in the mirror and moved closer to it.
“Your wolves…their dual nature is both a blessing and a curse to everyone around. If one dominates the other, there could be problems.” He went ahead to explain everything to me and I stood in front of the mirror, processing his words.
The feeling was overwhelming. “Is that why I could resist silver?” I asked curiously and he turned to look at me, his eyes dark and serious.
“Silver?” he asked and I nodded, detailing the incident when I was locked in the silver room and even when I took a silver bullet for Alpha Willaims.
“We must begin the healing as soon as possible before it’s too late,” he whispered in a serious tone.
“Alright,” I replied, turning away from the mirror, “I’m ready.”
My eyes widened in shock when I felt a strange piercing pain on my neck and I turned to see Lucien’s mouth covered in blood. Is that my blood? I thought as I clutched my neck and a sense of dizziness washed over me and darkness threatened to take over.
“I said I was ready to be healed, not get bitten.” I muttered as I fell to the ground. As my eyes closed, I looked up at him but his eyes held a malicious glint.
Why?
