Twisted Loyalties

Author’s POV

Jack waited in the shadows, listening intently to the murmurs echoing through the narrow hallway. The voices drifted out from behind the thick walls of Alpha Kane's private quarters, a mix of dark promises and threats that tightened the coil of disgust in Jack's chest.

He’d seen how Kane’s ambitions twisted over time, transforming him into someone nearly unrecognizable. He no longer led for the good of the pack but for his own vendettas and selfish gains.

Alpha Kane had betrayed the very essence of what it meant to lead a pack. He had corrupted everything, leaving Jack questioning his own loyalty and morals. Every order, every whispered threat, every cold glance felt like a dagger to his pride as a beta.

How far Kane had fallen from the strong leader he once admired. Now, all Jack saw was a tyrant.

Behind closed doors, Jack had uncovered secrets—the list of those who had “disappeared” under Kane’s rule, those who’d questioned him or dared to voice disapproval. Worse still, he found evidence of a hidden cell just outside the borders of the pack, in a secluded area. Cleopatra had once asked about in hushed curiosity.

It turned his stomach to think of what might have happened there. He suspected it was more than just a cell; it was a symbol of Kane’s twisted control over anyone who dared oppose him, or worse.

And he found out that Kane kept a woman imprisoned in his private quarters, her presence known to no one outside Kane’s tight inner circle. It made Jack’s blood run cold. He couldn’t shake the image of that poor soul, alone and abandoned, as Kane's prisoner.

Jack had been secretly meeting with the exiled Beta, the one falsely accused and sentenced to die on Kane’s orders.

The alliance they’d formed was delicate yet essential. They shared the same purpose now: to end Kane’s reign of terror. While Kane had been leading his soldiers on a “test attack” on Cleopatra and Williams, Jack slipped away unnoticed, relaying every grim detail to the exiled Beta. They both knew the time was drawing near to act.

Now, Jack had to take the next step. He couldn’t do this alone, and if anyone could understand the depth of Kane’s cruelty, if anyone would want him gone for good, it was Cleopatra.

As he reached his quarters, Jack locked the door behind him and picked up his phone, calling Cleopatra. The line connected, and he could hear her steady breathing on the other end.

"Beta Jack?" Cleopatra’s voice was calm but laced with tension, as if she already sensed the weight of his news. “I’m so sorry that I didn’t return your last call, I was…”

"Cleopatra," Jack said, interrupting her and swallowing his own bitterness. “I need to tell you everything.”

He started from the beginning, recounting how he’d quietly observed Kane's schemes, piecing together the full extent of the Alpha’s alliances and his ruthless ambitions.

Jack’s voice was filled with barely concealed anger as he described Kane’s dealings—the alliances he’d forged with enemies, even strangers willing to sacrifice everything just to see Williams and Cleopatra fall.

Kane’s selfish desires, his bloodlust, and his vendetta against anyone who questioned him…it was as though the Kane he once knew had been consumed by something dark and insatiable.

Cleopatra listened in silence, only interjecting with a low hum or a sharp intake of breath as he unraveled the details of Kane's latest plans. When Jack finished, he braced himself, half-expecting a reaction of shock or outrage. But Cleopatra simply let out a weary sigh.

“I saw it, beta Jack,” she replied, her voice barely a whisper. “I had a vision of all this last night—the alliances, the attack, Kane’s betrayal. Williams and I have been working on a plan of our own.”

Jack felt a flicker of relief. Cleopatra’s calm in the face of such treachery steadied his resolve. After he discovered Cleopatra had powers, he pieced together the puzzle he had been trying to solve for years. The main reason Alpha Kane assigned the task to her.

“Then, if you’ve seen it…you know what this means,” he said calmly.

“Yes," she replied, a quiet intensity in her voice. "I want you to arrange a meeting with the exiled Beta you’ve been working with. Bring him to the palace. We’re going to need allies if we’re going to end this once and for all.”

Jack nodded, despite the fact she couldn’t see him. “We’ll be there. I’ll make sure of it.”

“Good,” Cleopatra said. “We’ll make preparations on our end, but Beta Jack…be careful. Alpha Kane has eyes and ears everywhere. If he suspects even a hint of betrayal…”

“I know,” Jack replied, the faintest edge of a smile pulling at his lips. “But Cleopatra, there’s something else. Kane…he’s holding someone in his quarters. A woman. I don’t know who she is yet, but I’m gathering all the evidence I can. If this ever reaches trial, he won’t just lose his title—he’ll lose everything. Though if I’m honest, I’d rather end him myself.”

Cleopatra’s silence was loaded with understanding. “He doesn't deserve a trial. I'll get justice for everyone he has hurt.”

Just then, a faint sound caught Jack's attention—a soft gasp from the other side of his door. He froze, his heart pounding as he quickly got up from his desk, his mind racing. Has someone overheard? He moved quietly, approaching the door, straining his ears to catch any further sounds.

The hall outside was eerily silent, but that gasp hadn’t been his imagination. He took a deep breath, his senses heightened.
“Beta Jack?” Cleopatra’s voice was tinged with concern, sensing my sudden silence.
“Hush,” he whispered, moving silently toward the door, the hairs on the back of his neck standing up. He wrapped his hand around the handle, bracing himself to confront whatever—or whoever—waited on the other side.
