The Silver Lining

Cleopatra’s POV

The world went dark and stiff. A deafening silence welcomed me. I could feel the warmth of my blood seeping out, a cold dread creeping into my heart unconsciously.

I could hear the voices and struggling footsteps echoing in the vast emptiness of the warehouse as they fought one another.

I forced my eyes open. The world was a blur of colors and shapes. A sharp pain gnawed in my stomach and I coughed out blood. I could feel the cold, hard concrete beneath me. I was conscious. Somehow, I was still moving on my own.

The realization hit me like a ton of bricks. I had taken a silver bullet. For our kind, that was a death sentence. But here I was, breathing and moving. My mind briefly went to the torture room and the rusted silvers. Did I do that?

“Fuck!” I cussed out loud. Why did I take a bullet for him? All I remember is that my wolf moved before I could think properly. Since I started training for this mission, my wolf has been dormant. Could it be the masking spray? The thought crossed my mind once again but I waved it off.

What matters now is that I can feel her again.

Maybe my wolf saving Alpha Williams is for the best. Maybe this time, he’ll have no choice but to trust me.

A surge of adrenaline coursed through me, pushing the pain to the background. I had to focus. I had to win his trust completely.

My wolf took over and I pulled up, clutching my stomach, my body trembling. I ignored the dizziness and continued moving forward. Where is Alpha Williams?

My knees buckled under and I fell. I crawled towards the figure of Renee and finally reached them. Alpha Williams was laying on his back while Renee barked out orders for them to get the car ready.

I scanned the warehouse but Rider was nowhere near. He must have fled after firing the shot. I took a mental note to pay him back.

Bullets for a bullet.

My wolf was relieved, seeing Alpha Williams breathing softly. I collapsed close to him, my vision blurring.
As my eyes began closing, I could
Make out Williams’ face, etched with fear and concern. Then darkness claimed me once more.

I jumped up from the bed, Startled. The sharp pain on the left side of my stomach reminded me of the fight at the warehouse.

My body aches, every movement sends a sharp pain to my bones. I looked around. The familiar room caused a small smile to play on my lips. The east wing. I was back at the Stone Heart pack.

I feel strange. Different. Stronger. Did the silver bullet do this to me? Can it even do something like this? I felt this darkness deep inside me, a growing hunger that terrified me. What is happening to me?

I felt an energy course through me. It was both exhilarating and terrifying.

Just then, Renee walked in, her face etched with worry and gratitude.
I smiled. Gotcha!

A flicker of relief flashed across her eyes when she saw me sitting up.

“You’re awake,” she whispered, her voice soft and calm.
I tried to speak, but my throat was dry. She reached for a glass of water on the vanity table and helped me drink.

I could get used to this, I thought dryly.

“How long was I out?” I managed to croak.
Renee hesitated. “A few days,” she replied softly. “And we’ve contacted your pack to let them know you’re here.”

Ok now it’s getting weird. This side of Renee kinda terrified me.

“Is Alpha Williams ok?” I asked, my voice stronger than before.

“He bounced back within a day. Out for a meeting with Mr Smith,” she replied patiently.

Mr Smith? I wondered. Could it be that he's revealing that I was one who attacked his family? If that’s the case then I just took a bullet for nothing.

“Have a seat, Alpha. Pacing around will do you no good at this point,” our pack doctor advised. I just came in from the city and went straight to see the pack doctor.

Mr Smith was alive all these while? His explanation about faking his death and that of his family made no sense but I let him be.

I made a quick stop at the hotel. I’ll be spending my time there more often. I’ve declared war already on all rogues and God help Rider. The day I set my eyes on him again is the day he breathes last.

He mocked my position as the Alpha by peeing all over me. Only my heart knows the kind of punishment awaits him whenever I run into him.

And there was Cleopatra! What was she thinking? I can’t seem to figure out what goes on in that pretty head of hers. How can she profess to be engaged to Dylan and still take a bullet for me?

“What else did you find?” I asked Eugene, the pack doctor. I stopped pacing around and sat on his desk.

“Well, silver alone is deadly to our kind. But that wasn’t just silver. It was coated with something far more lethal. Rider really wanted you dead,” he explained, pausing briefly to study my face.

“Can I see the bullet?” I asked.

“That’s another problem. You see, I wasn’t able to get it out. It is nestled inside a vital organ in her body, any puncture could kill her. I only recovered debris from it,” he replied, rubbing his forehead.

“What?” I asked, exhaustion and confusion drowning my strengths.

“My question is, how did Rider get his hands on that lethal substance? This cannot just fall into anyone's hands let alone the hands of a rogue! Only the Alpha king has access to this substance, so how did Rider get his hands on it?” He asked, his brows furrowed.

Could it be? No! The Alpha king cannot hand these over to some stupid rogue and besides, if there is anyone I trust with my life, it is the Alpha king!

I got up and paced around the office, running a hand through my hair. Different thoughts and emotions ran down my spine almost at once. I need to know exactly who I’m fighting against.

I’m beginning to get tired of all these shady attacks. I stopped, frozen on my tracks when the thought clicked in my head, causing a wave of nausea to wash over me.

“Hold on Eugene,” I ordered, “If that bullet is lethal and should kill at impact, why is Cleopatra still alive, even when it’s still buried inside her body?”

The look he gave me told me that he hadn't thought of it, causing a cold shiver to run down my spine.
