Her Poisoned Wolf
Cleopatra's POV
The fork dropped out of my hand, the sound echoing throughout the dining hall.
How did he get to know about shadow and my mission? It can't be!
My heart pounded like a drum. I've been so careful not to mention anything about my mission or let anyone find out. Except for the maid who overheard my conversation with Alpha Kane. Could it be her?
I looked at him, my eyes wide with confusion. I had to think fast.
“Shadow? Mission?” I stammered, trying to sound confused. “I don't know what you're talking about, Alpha Williams.”
I tried to maintain a calm facade, but my hands were shaking slightly. What if he already found out and has been playing along all these while? I could feel the sweat starting to form on my forehead. He was staring at me intently, his eyes piercing through my soul.
“Don't play dumb with me, Cleopatra,” he said, his voice low and cold. “I heard you murmur those words while I was trying to wake you up earlier in the bathroom.”
My mind raced. He heard me say them? Why don't I remember? I had to come up with something quick that would not make him suspect me in any way.
“I must have been dreaming,” I replied defiantly. The fact that he doesn't really know what's going on but just heard those words made me more confident. “I don't remember saying anything like that.”
He leaned forward, his eyes never leaving mine. “Is that so?” he asked, his voice laced with doubt.
I nodded but then decided to make all his doubt go away. “But something has been bugging me lately, maybe that's why I muttered those words in my sleep,” I lied, the look on his face encouraging me to go on.
“What's that?” he asked, fully immersed in the conversation.
“Remember the night I was attacked by the Night Wolf Alpha?” I asked, pausing to see his reaction. “He called me Shadow! He said that is my name. So since then, I've been on this personal mission to understand why and how I'm shadow and not Cleopatra,” I said.
He looked at me and something I can't place my hands on crossed his features. Does he know about it already?
He didn't ask me anything further and he didn't look like he found what I said suspicious.
“Alright,” he said, leaning back in his chair. “I was wondering why you've not been curious about your ties with the Night wolves.”
He took a sip of his wine, a distant look plastered in his face. I think he knows something that I don't know.
“But there's something I have for you,” he said, catching my attention. “I think you're kind of in danger.”
My eyes widened in shock and confusion? What does he mean by that, I wondered as I pinched my brow in confusion.
“I don't understand, what do you mean by that?” I asked.
“You know how your wolf was unresponsive?” he asked, still staring into a vacant space. “I think it's because you're taking something that is…bad for her.”
“You mean that I'm intentionally harming my wolf?” I asked, sounding a little bit defensive.
“No-no, what I mean is..your wolf is in danger and it could be caused by something you're taking,” he stammered.
I looked at him like he had just gone crazy. Is this some sort of joke? How can I put myself in danger? How am I hurting my Wolf? More still, why does his theory make sense?
I picked up my fork and resumed eating. I need to at least eat so that my wolf will be strong. Maybe that was why she was weak. I didn't eat all day. That makes more sense right?
I didn't notice that I was stuffing food into my mouth until Alpha Williams yanked the fork out of my hands.
“What are you doing!” He growled.
I smiled up at him, my mouth full with pasta. I tried to swallow them all up so I could reply to him but then I started coughing profusely.
He rushed to my seat and gently patted my back. He gave me a glass of what and I took it, grateful for the gesture. Tears were streaming down my face uncontrollably because of the cough. I must look like a mess to him right now.
He handed me a handkerchief and I dabbed the tears off. “I'm sorry if I look a mess,” I said, trying to fix the scene. “I'm very hungry.”
“Hey hey, easy. It's all ok,” he cooed, patting me gently. “You think stuffing your belly with food will help your wolf?” He asked while chuckling lightly.
“Well that's all I can think of right now,” I replied, taking a sip from the glass.
He withdrew his hand from my back, and stepped away.
“I might have something that will help,” he said and his hands dropped into his pocket.
He brought out a bottle and passed it to me. “Eugene said you should take this, it will help take care of whatever you took that is hurting your wolf,” he said, sounding genuine.
I looked at the bottle dangling in his hands and then back at his face. This is it. This was what Alpha Kane warned me about. Could it be they are the ones poisoning me just like Alpha Kane suggested?
“And what is that?” I asked, my voice laced with sarcasm.
“An antidote. For the substance that is killing your wolf,” he said, sounding so sure of himself.
How could he possibly know that my wolf is being poisoned? Because I told him my wolf was dormant just this one time? And what if he does, how does he know what the poison is and how to get an antidote?
What a joke! My Alpha warned me beforehand so I'm not gonna fall for this cheap trick.
I snatched the bottle from his hand, my fingers gently brushing his in the process and he groaned. I unscrewed the cap and brought it to my nose. The scent was unfamiliar, but there was something strangely comforting about it.
I looked at Alpha Williams, my eyes filled with suspicion. “How can I be sure this isn't poison?” I asked, my voice barely a whisper.
He growled at me angrily, his voice causing shivers to run down my spine.
“And what would I benefit from poisoning you?” He asked, his voice dangerously low.
He was right. What would he gain from poisoning me? Not like he suspects that I'm a spy or anything. But Alpha Kane’s warning kept ringing in my ears.
Before I could respond, the lights flickered and died, plunging the room into darkness. A terrifying growl echoed through the pack house, followed by blood-curdling screams.
Isn't it too soon for the attack?
