A Beta's Oath
Jack's POV
I felt the tension in the air as I wandered deeper into the woods, the shadows cloaking me like a second skin. I could sense their eyes watching me as though I was their prey.
I stepped into a small clearing, casting a glance over my shoulder as I pulled down my pants and urinated against a tree. Enough is enough!
“Why the hell are you following me?” I yelled into the stillness of the woods, the sound echoing back at me like an accusation. “Show yourselves!”
The underbrush rustled as the two wolves emerged, their eyes glinting in the dim light. They shifted, revealing their hulking forms, muscles coiled beneath their thick fur. My heart raced as anger surged within me.
“Why are you stalking me?!” I shouted, my voice raw and demanding. “Is this how you treat your own Beta? Do you think I'm a traitor now?”
They both exchanged glances, and one stepped forward. “We were sent to keep an eye on you, Beta Jack. And besides, we don't answer to you, we answer to Alpha Kane alone.”
“Is this how it is? If the Alpha doesn't trust me, then he should send someone else instead of having his dogs trail me like some fucking rogue!”
The second man spoke, trying to placate me. “It's just a precaution. You know how he is after…”
“Enough!” I snapped. “I'm really done with this. If the Alpha thinks that I'm a liability, then he should deal with me himself. I refuse to be treated like a traitor after everything I've done for him and with him!”
I pulled out my phone, my fingers trembling slightly as I dialed Alpha Kane's number. When he answered, I feigned anger. I need to make him believe that I was still cluelessly following him without question and that I'm still loyal.
“Alpha Kane, you sent your special wolves to follow me? Why? Is this how you treat your own Beta after everything I've been through for you?”
“Jack, it's nothing personal. It's simply a precautionary measure. You know how many times I've been betrayed. I can't stand it anymore, you of all people should understand that,” he replied, his voice surprisingly smooth but laced with tension.
“Well I have a problem with how you included me into your list of possible traitors when all I've done is be by your side,” I shot back, my pulse racing. “I'd rather turn back right now with your men, than be treated with this much disrespect that I obviously do not deserve. I thought we were on the same side here, Alpha.”
There was a long pause on the other end, and I could practically feel the weight of his frustration. I need his total trust now. Last thing I needed was for him to start doubting me when I hadn't even started my mission to unmask him.
“Calm down, Jack. Like I said, it's just a precaution. I'll call them off. Continue with the mission and go to the Alpha king.”
“Fine,” I said, my tone begrudgingly shifting. “But I won't forget this day in a hurry.”
After ending the call, I took one last glance at the wolves’ retreating form and turned on my heels. I will have to keep meeting Cleopatra for another day. What if they still followed me secretly? I could end up exposing Cleopatra.
I mounted the motorcycle once more and zoomed off. The Alpha King's palace loomed ahead. I approached cautiously, steeling myself for what was to come. But now, I'm damn sure news has reached the Alpha, of how our pack attacked the Stone Heart Pack.
Why would he want to entertain the very man that waged war against his nephew? The only reason why we haven't received a punishment yet is because of Cleopatra.
The heavy doors swung open, revealing the majestic courtyard as I made my way inside. I was stopped by a guard and I stated my reason for seeking the Alpha King's presence.
I was instructed to wait while they inform him of my presence. After what seemed like several hours, the guard came back and handed me a letter. It was sealed with the Alpha King's signature so I dare not open it.
“Your pack had been instructed not to make another contact with the royal pack. You are to wait for further information,” he finished and guided me out of the courtyard.
As I sped out of the royal territory, unease settled in the pit of my stomach. I feared that the storm brewing might affect the other pack members, who have no idea what Alpha Kane has been up to.
What if the Alpha King decides to share the pack members among the other packs or worse still as slaves. I can't let that happen. I won't let that happen.
As the Beta, I promise to do everything in my power to save the pack, even if that would mean betraying Alpha Kane. After all, my allegiance is to the Silverfang Pack and not the Alpha.
I glanced up as the moon pierced through the trees, casting an eerie glow on the road ahead. Something was wrong. My instincts prickled–the air felt charged.
Immediately, I heard it—a rustling, low growl in the distance. Was I being followed again? But before I could even react, I felt a sharp pinch on my neck. My hands instinctively went up to my neck as I skidded to a stop. A tranquilizer?
As my vision blurred, I could make out two figures approaching me. I crashed to the ground, the figures looming over me now as darkness threatened to swallow me.
One of them knelt down, his voice cold and taunting.
“Sleep well, Beta. By the time you wake, the Alpha King won't be your only problem.”
And then darkness came.
