An Unsettling Puzzle
Williams’ POV
This is already midnight and Cleopatra isn't back. Her phone is switched off so I can't even reach her.
Could she still be at her missing friend's place? Or has she gotten herself into trouble? I lay calmly in bed, trying to concentrate on other pressing matters. Cleopatra can take care of herself.
But a nagging doubt crept into my mind. What if she had gotten herself into a bigger mess while trying to find Alex?
I pushed the thoughts away, willing myself to sleep but my mind raced with images of Cleopatra.
I swung my legs over the bed and stood up, the floor feeling unusually cold against my bare feet. Since I can't sleep, maybe I should go and get busy with the paperworks I have been working on.
The air outside my room was tense in a way, like the peace before a storm.
I made it to my study in my desperate need to clear my head off Cleopatra. I decided to postpone calling her again until morning. For now, I had to focus on the impending meeting of the Alphas.
As I sat down at my desk, I began to lay out the documents I would need for the meeting. When the Alpha King informed me about the appointment, I wasn't overjoyed like he expected.
I knew I had enemies all around. This will only make my enemies unite against me. The thought of being a governor over several packs filled me with a sense of dread.
A lot of Alphas would kill for this position as it is one of power but it's also a dangerous one. Me and my pack would be a target for rival packs, and my loyalty to the Alpha King would be constantly tested.
I pushed the uncertainty and dread aside. It is an insult to reject an appointment from the Alpha King so I have no choice but to prepare. More importantly, I had to be prepared for whatever challenges the meeting would bring.
A map of my territory was spread out before me. Renee and I had already worked on the positioning of warriors during the meeting. We cannot afford to be compromised on that day.
It would be deadly if we don't plan ahead for surprise attacks.
But as I worked, my mind kept wandering back to Cleopatra. I couldn't shake the feeling that something was terribly wrong. Somehow, I just know it.
The weight of responsibility pressed down on me as I buried myself deep into the details of the upcoming meeting.
It is expected to be held in my pack so every decision lies on my shoulders. It wouldn't hurt to have Cleopatra in my arms tonight. Her smooth and silky skin against mine could ease the tension on my mind.
A knock at the door interrupted my thoughts and I groaned. “Come in,” I called out.
The door creaked open, revealing Renee. She had a laptop in her hands.
“Did you find anything on him?” I asked hopefully.
“Not directly. But I did find something.” She walked over to my desk and placed the system on it. “I called the mayor and told him that one of us had been kidnapped,” she paused and looked directly at me as if expecting a certain expression.
“He directed me to the police, so right now, I have access to the CCTV footage from outside the hospital to several locations he couldn't avoid in order to escape.”
“So did you find him?” I asked, confused as to where all her explanation is leading to.
“Sort of. But his face wasn't so clear. That doesn't mean we can't work with what we have at the moment. I have some of our men, looking through the footage so we can know his hideout,” she replied firmly.
“So we don't really have a lead?” I asked, suddenly disappointed.
“We already have an idea of what he looks like and then there is the symbol. We can easily find him now. But there is one thing I'm certain of Alpha,” she whispered with a determined look in her eyes, “He stays in the city.”
“OK. That is something we can work with,” I replied, a little relieved. At least we know he doesn't stay in this part of our world.
“One more thing Alpha Kane,” Renee said hesitantly, a look of uncertainty in her eyes.
“What is it?” I asked curiously.
“Maybe I should just show you,” she replied and proceeded to show me some footage.
“What is the meaning of this? How is this possible?” I asked all at once, confused at what I was seeing.
“And that's just some of it, there are about four of them and in each, he was secretly following Cleopatra,” she said, confirming my fears.
My eyes widened in shock but I tried to control my emotions. Does this mean Alex was kidnapped on purpose because of Cleopatra?
I already knew that this wasn't some random act of violence. But to find out that someone has been watching Cleopatra, tracking her every move. This can't be a simple case of kidnapping. It is far more sinister.
Who is behind this and why?
Where the hell is she right now anyway? A cold dread settled in my stomach. The sudden urge to protect her was consuming me and my wolf was getting very restless.
Somehow I feel responsible. What if I'm the target? This same tattoo was on the arms of the wolf that murdered my mate. What if they are after Cleopatra now, thinking she's my second chance mate? What if kidnapping Alex was just a ploy to get Cleopatra?
Hold on… No. No. It can't be.
“Renee,” I said, my voice cold and menacing, “we need to find her. Now.”
