Shadow of Deception

Cleopatra's POV

“Are you sure you don't need me to go with you? Theo offered for the one hundredth time. A small smile played on my lips. He has been nothing but helpful all the while but still, I couldn't shake off the suspicions.

Why didn't he ask me questions when my cuts closed up? Why wasn't he concerned about my healing process? Does he know about my kind? What did he really see when he was monitoring the Night Wolves? Something is not just adding up.

I waved him goodbye and crossed over to the other side of the road. One of our pack members was waiting for me with a motorcycle. I got in and he zoomed off.
The long drive back to our pack gave me enough time to think about my next move. But first, our Alpha has to tell me how the fuck I'm a Night Wolf. Why did they hide it from me?
We got to the pack and I stormed off towards the Alpha’s office and this time, no one stopped me. I gently tapped on the door once and opened it. Our Alpha stood by the window, his back turned towards me.

“Alpha…” but he cut me off immediately.
“This is not the right time for the fight you have raging in your heart,” he paused, and turned to face me.
His face was stern, his eyes focused on me in a commanding stare, “I will order Jack to invade them with some of our men. You don't have to tangle yourself further with that spiteful clan.”
What is he even saying? This is my fight? Why am I not a part of this mission?

“Alpha, this is my fight. I want to be the one leading the attack,” I retorted, my voice low and my eyes fixed to the floor.
“Look at me,” he commanded and I did, “Do you trust me?”
If he had asked me this a month ago I would have answered immediately but with all these looming questions, I hesitated. My lips quivered as I struggled to let the words roll out of my lips.

His face looked like he dared me to answer otherwise. “I.. I do trust you Alpha, but I have questions…sir. Am I really a member of this pack?”
I did not expect his outburst. He threw his head back, and laughed so hard that he clutched his stomach with both hands.
“I'm guessing they played their legendary deception on you. Did they call you shadow? That you are needed for cleansing their pack?” he asked amidst a fit of laughter.
“One thing you should know about the Night Wolves is that they are the most cunning and deceitful of all among our kind. Only the gullible fall for their petty tricks. You are a member of the Silverfang pack and that my dear weapon is final.”

How did he know about all these? Would he lie to me about this? What is he hiding? I was not satisfied with the response I got. I still needed answers.

“What about the mark on my back? Alpha Williams said…”
“Enough Cleopatra!” he roared, his voice on edge like he is about to lose his cool, “You will do as I say, no questions asked. Have I made myself clear?” he growled in his Alpha voice.
“Yes Alpha,” I answered defeatedly.
“You have to get back to your mission and get it done quickly. News of Alpha Williams's terror is growing at a fast pace. Don't forget the first thing I told you about him,” he said, causing the fury I have for Alpha Williams to be reignited.

“Remember Cleopatra, he killed my mate, our Luna!”
I've been soft on him for the longest time. Even felt sympathy for him. For the man who ripped our Luna from us. I loved her like she was my mother.
“I would like to stay back for a while,” I said to him, “I need to train more and restrategize.” I said with a determined look.
“Of course!” he replied almost immediately, “You are to stay back here until he comes.”

I looked at him, confusion written all over my face.
“Are we expecting anyone, sir?”

“There is a guest coming for a three day official meeting arranged by the Alphas. You are to accompany him to the Stone Heart Pack. Get back on track with the mission. I heard Alpha Williams's marriage got canceled? Don't miss this opportunity,” he ordered sternly.

Different thoughts spiraled in my head but I knew better not to disobey our Alpha.

“Did you hear me?” My Alpha’s hoarse voice pulled me back to reality, “I said leave my office.”
I bowed silently and left.

I needed to let my wolf out, it's been ages. I stumbled through the dense forest surrounding our pack. The need to let my wolf run free almost driving me mad.
Adrenaline coursed through me as a new resolve to destroy Alpha Williams built up. Soon enough, my wolf was out, we ran for miles until I couldn't feel my paws. I stopped, my breath coming out in ragged gasps.

A branch snapped behind me and I turned, alerted and ready to pounce on any threat. Beta Jack emerged from the trees, a different look than what I'm used to gleamed in his eyes. It was almost as if he felt pity for me.

But why? What is he hiding behind those eyes?
“I can see you're a little out of shape, Cleopatra,” he said, bypassing exchanging pleasantries with me.
“We'll resume training tonight, our former spot.” I nodded silently, observing him with keen eyes as he walked away, his hands folded behind his back.

I was landing meticulous and hard blows on the punching bag in my room when a rapt knock came in.
“Cleopatra? The Alpha wants you. The guests are here.”

I did not respond but continued my training. Few minutes later I was out of the shower and heading out of my room. I wore loose shorts with a big shirt and descended down the stairs.
Time to get the mission back on track. I walked down the hallway and into a corridor that led to the Alpha’s office. I knocked gently and opened the door.

“Come in dear! Our Alpha yelled excitedly, “This is Cleopatra, our beauty with the brawn,” he introduced with a sense of pride.
I turned to face the guest with my hands extended.

It couldn't be. The smile I had plastered on my face turned sour when I saw the guest.
He had this twisted smile on his face that told me he knew exactly who I was back then and he isn't surprised to see me here.

“I'm excited to meet you again Cleopatra,” Theo said, his voice a low rumble.
