Her Dark Secret

Williams’ POV

When I first caught sight of a large wolf, towering over the chaos with so much grace and power, I knew without question that she was the one.

But why is she back here? Could it be that she rejected her mate to be by my side? I wondered but even as the thoughts came to me, I laughed at the absurdity. Is that even possible?

The moment I spotted the vampires, my hopes came crashing. Why did it bother me so much that her mate is here to help? At least they will be doing me a favor. The battle was much more bigger than I thought. Dylan moved in with his men when he didn't receive any signal from Marcus.

They would all definitely pay for this, I swore to myself. Are they forgetting that I've been appointed as the Alpha over their packs? I guess they didn't think this through. Either that or they were so confident that they would win.

My attention was divided between fighting off this stupid rogue Alpha and stealing glances at Cleopatra. When our eyes met briefly, I could see the pain and concern in hers. At least she still cares. Alpha Kane must have spotted my distraction and charged in at that moment, landing a fatal injury on me.

I fought ferociously, regardless of the wounds and the loss of blood. None of them will make it out of here alive. I'd rather die with them. Just then, Cleopatra charged in front of me protectively, knocking Kyle off with a lethal force and sending him flying meters away from where we were.

“I think we both know how this ends, Cleopatra,” I heard Kane growl, his voice cold. He stood amidst the chaos, unbothered by the fact that they were losing. “You have fought well, but this isn't your war, is it?”

I watched Cleopatra freeze on the spot, her jaws tightening in anger and something else I couldn't decipher. She didn't say a word. She stood still in front of me, motionless like he had her right where she dreaded.

He's her Alpha after all. It's considered treason to fight against the pack you've sworn allegiance to but I'm not about to let her go with him for anything. If it means marking her right here as mine to save her from any consequence, I would do so willingly.

“Come with me, or I'll tell him,” Kane whispered, his voice carried by the wind. “I'll tell Williams who you really are, what you've done. Do you think Williams or anyone in the realm will look at you the same when they find out who you killed?”

Wait what? Who she killed? What's going on here? I felt the ground shift beneath me as his words took root. I looked over to Cleopatra for her to say something. Anything. But she remained still.

Kane's eyes gleamed with power, knowing he had cornered Cleopatra. “This can all end now. No more war. Just you and me. Or I can destroy you, Cleopatra.”

“And how do you intend on doing that?” I growled, pushing Cleopatra behind me and stepping forward. I don't care about his stupid threat. All I know is that I'm not about to let Cleopatra go with him. Whoever it was she killed…well, we could discuss that later…right?

He ignored me and continued threatening Cleopatra. “Would you rather come quietly or do I have to drag you across several dead bodies back to the pack?”

“Look around you, Kane,” I barked, towering over him now, despite the pain on my side, “you have already lost and guess what? It doesn't end here. I'm coming for you with all I got. You dared to mess with me?” I growled.

He scoffed as if he hadn't just been backed into a corner. His confidence oozed, even with his men and the rogues fleeing from the battle. “You really think you have control here, Williams? You're more foolish than I thought.”

My fist collided with his cheek before his words settled. The smug bastard. How could he stand there as if he hadn't already lost? Here he was, still playing a game only he seemed to understand.

Cleopatra shifted beside me, her body tense. Her silence was becoming unbearable. I needed answers. I needed her to deny whatever it was Kane was holding over her, but she wouldn't look at me.

“Kane,” I snarled, my voice low and dangerous while he rubbed his cheek, “I don't care what you think you know. Cleopatra stays with me. You want to threaten her? You're threatening me!”

“Oh, dear Alpha,” Kane's voice dropped to a whisper, but his words slithered through the chaos like venom, “if only you know how much I've despised you all these years. You are the genesis of my dilemma, Williams. You are the reason Cleopatra is who she is today.”

My gaze darted back to Cleopatra, whose eyes were fixed to the ground now. Her shoulders slumped as if the weight of the world had just been dropped onto them. Why isn't she refuting any of the statements he's making?

“What's he talking about? I demanded, stepping towards her, but she didn't move. “Cleopatra, what is he talking about?”

Kane's smirk widened. “Would you really tell him or come with me?” he said with his hand stretched out towards Cleopatra.

For a heartbeat, the sounds of battle seemed to fade, the chaos around us becoming a distant hum. All that existed was Cleopatra and whatever dark truth she was hiding.

“I…I…it was a mistake,” she finally muttered, her voice so soft I almost missed it. Her blue eyes, once filled with fire and confidence, now looked haunted. “It was…a long time ago. I don't know how it happened.”

“What are you talking about?” I asked, my voice gentler now, but the confusion only deepened. “What did you do?”

Cleopatra still wouldn't meet my eyes. She trembled slightly, though I could see her struggling to maintain her composure.

Kane took a slow, menacing step forward, his eyes glinting with cruel amusement. “My sweet Cleopatra. Are you sure that you want to take this path? Do you really enjoy his bed so much that you're willing to let it all go?”

I could see the conflict raging inside her, the battle between loyalty, fear, and survival. She was trapped.

I grabbed her arm, my grip tightening with every second that she left me clueless. “Tell me, Cleopatra Smith! What did you do?”

I froze, my breath stuck in my throat as the words left her mouth. “What?” I echoed, trying to wrap my head around what she just confessed to.

“I killed Alpha Kane's father,” she whispered, her voice cracking.
