Her perfect Alibi
Cleopatra's POV
I froze with the phone still in my ears.
My heart pounded like a war drum, echoing in my ears but I still managed to keep my gaze and composure defiant.
Renee stood there, looking at me suspiciously, her eyes seemed to bore holes into me, promising a storm.
“What do you think you’re doing?” She hissed, her voice low and dangerous.
I swallowed hard, my mind racing. This was not how I envisioned this ending. One wrong move and I could be exposed. I maintained my carefully constructed facade, looking at her squarely to respond.
“I was on a call with a friend,” I replied boldly.
Renee’s lips curled into a sneer. “Is that so?” Her voice dripped with sarcasm. “Or were you busy spilling our plans to your pack? I heard you on the phone.”
My blood ran cold. Did she hear my conversation or was this just a lucky guess?
“How dare you accuse me of such?!” I growled angrily, my voice steady despite the turmoil within.
Renee stepped closer, her breath warm on my face. “Don’t play dumb with me Cleopatra,” she growled. “Let me see your phone, if you feel you’re innocent,” she demanded.
I had to think fast. She would know I called Beta Jack and will find it extremely suspicious. I needed to buy time.
“You want me to give you my phone because of your delusions?” I yelled, my voice rising slightly.
Just then a familiar called out to me.
“Cleo!” I turned and saw Alex, waving his hands as he walked up to us.
“This wasn’t where you said you were a few minutes ago over the phone,” he whined, giving me a knowing smile.
“I said just around the corner to your left!” I said quickly, catching up to his cover.
Phew! That was a relief.
Renee stared at us, taking a step back, her eyes narrowed. “I’m sorry. I thought you were..”
“Thought I was what Renee?” I barked, cutting her off. “You thought I was snitching to my pack about your grand plans? Like I fucking care!”
I saw Willaims coming out and decided to add an extra flavor to kill the suspicion entirely.
“You know what? I’ll rather not be in a place where I’m constantly under a lens. You shouldn’t judge people that way and..,”
“What is going on here?” Alpha Willaims demanded, his voice cutting through the tension. I could see the look of exhaustion in his eyes, as he stood towering over us, his gaze flickering between Renee and me.
This wasn’t what he wanted to walk in on.
“Maybe you should start off by asking your Beta, because I’m tired of trying to prove myself. And if you think for one second that I would let you accuse me of being a spy, then think again!” I snapped and stormed out with Alex hot on my track.
That went well, I thought with a tiny smile.

Willaims’ POV
“What is going on here?” My voice cut through the tension, a demand for order.
Few minutes ago, I was absentmindedly tapping my feet eagerly for this meeting to be over. The promise in Cleopatra’s eyes when she left made me yearn for her the most.
I heard her yell outside and excused myself. Was someone harassing her? Just then I remembered I didn’t give her the key to my office.
What is going on? I wondered, seeing Cleopatra and Renee glare at each other with a dangerous intensity. I moved towards them, looming over their figures.
Cleopatra’s voice was filled with the type of anger I’ve only seen once. The day I asked her to leave my pack. I glanced at the man next to her and he offered a sheepish grin, which made me feel a surge of irritation.
Cleopatra stormed off with the man running after her. I raked a hand through my hair, frustrated. I turned to Renee and cut her off when she tried to explain, my voice low and cold.
“Enough with the accusations, Beta Renee. You’ve crossed the line. As much as I hate to admit, you do know I owe Cleopatra my life right?”
Renee looked taken aback, her defiance momentarily faltering. But she quickly recovered, her eyes narrowing. “I’m just being cautious, Alpha. We can’t afford to compromise this mission. I just can’t shake off the feeling that there is more to her than she lets on.”
“Caution is one thing, but paranoia is another,” I retorted. The look in her eyes made me swallow a deep breath. I know she’s just looking out for our pack and I respect that. “I won’t tolerate this behavior towards Cleopatra again. Have I made myself clear?”
Her response was a low whisper that I could barely hear but her bowed head told me she understood.
“Let’s get back to the meeting,” I ordered and turned away from her.
I have to calm down. My pack needs me to be focused now more than ever. With a deep breath, I returned to the meeting and took my seats but my thoughts were elsewhere. My gaze kept wandering, where did Cleopatra storm off to, with that horny human?
I tried to focus on the meeting, but my attention was divided. A growing unease settled in my gut. This doesn’t have anything to do with me being attracted to her, I said to myself. I’m just worried about someone I brought into the city with me.
I pulled out my phone, but her line was switched off. A song of worry shot through me. What if she had been kidnapped? What if that human works for Wolf hunters?
But Cleopatra can take care of herself. She’s a special breed.
As soon as the meeting was over, I stormed out, trying to get hold of Cleopatra. I pulled out my phone again, but still no luck.
“Alpha Williams?” Renee called. “The mayor is waiting in your office to sign the construction contract,” she said, not meeting my eyes.
I grunted and continued trying Cleopatra’s number.
As I turned towards the stair leading to my office, my heart skipped a beat. There, under the staircase, I heard their voices. Cleopatra and Alex. Their bodies were close, their postures intimate. A wave of disbelief washed over me.
Is this the kind of woman she is?
