Shadow’s Secret
Cleopatra’s POV
If I could count how many times I’ve passed out, I think I would break a world record. I tried to stretch but couldn’t.
A sense of panic welled up but was soon replaced by anger when I discovered that I was chained. I remembered what happened before I passed out. The bite and the smile on Lucien’s face.
They think these chains could hold me down? I pulled at them with all my strength but they wouldn't budge. Is this another joke or test?
The door opened and Lucien lazily strolled in, his eyes glowing bright red.
“What is going on?” I growled angrily at him. “Is this another stunt?”
He floated towards me. Like literally floated! What the hell is going on? The evil grin on his face grew wider as he came face to face with me.
“You are by far the most gullible food I’ve ever prepared,” he snarled, running his long fingers across my cheek. “It was so easy to convince you that I am not a threat.”
Is this really happening? No it can’t be! There is no way he made up all those stories about my parents, about my powers…what about Rob?
“There is one thing you should really know about vampires. We love to play with our food,” he hissed and slashed my arm with his finger.
I growled angrily and tried getting out of the chain but I couldn’t. Why is that? The more I struggled to break free, the more he laughed and that made me so furious. How did I let my guard down?
He sniffed the blood that tickled out of my wrist and a satisfied smile spread across his lips. “I can’t wait to suck you dry,” he whispered and stepped back towards the door.
As Lucien turned to leave, I fought the rising tide of panic. His taunts echoed in mind, moving with the pain radiating from the chains. Somehow it feels like they were enchanted.
I caught a glimpse of concern in his eyes as he watched me closely from the door. Then I remembered his words that he could never hurt me and somehow I left at ease.
Could this be part of the healing process he talked about?
“Is this really necessary?” I shouted at him, my voice hoarse but defiant. “Can’t you heal me without going through all this trouble?”
He face-palmed himself and shook his head in disbelief. “It is necessary so that your wolves will feel threatened but you just had to ruin it,” he scowled and I bursted out in laughter.
Okay that was intense.
“So now what?” I asked and he opened the door to leave. “I’ve already removed the bad blood caused by the substance you’ve been drinking when I punctured your neck. So for now, you remain tied up until your wolves break and take over,” he whispered calmly and left before I could add something else.
The days that followed were unbearable but on the fifth day, I felt a strong energy like never before. I’ve felt this way before back at the Stone Heart pack but not to this point.
It was as if my wolves were calling out to me, their presence no longer fading but surging. I could feel them both at the same time and I could hear their voices in my mind.
It felt like they had become stronger, intertwining, their forces merging as one. It was raw. It was powerful. It was mine.
Just then, realization struck me. This was not just a healing process. This was an awakening.
Suddenly, the chains that held me felt weaker. I pulled at them slightly and they snapped. I stood, my body trembling with newfound power. I took a deep breath, and the room seemed to pulse around me.
As if something beckoned to me, I walked over to the mirror and froze at the sight in front of me. I have become like the younger version of me!
My eyes glowed an intense blue and my hair had turned white. I reached out and pulled at my hair, just to be certain that I wasn’t hallucinating and it was real!
A woman’s figure briefly appeared behind me as I stared into the mirror. It was the beautiful woman with green eyes, smiling at me and just as quickly as she appeared, she was gone.
My mother. Amelia.
I headed for the door and unlocked it with ease. I had only taken three steps when I saw Rob rushing towards me.
“You’ve awakened.” Was all he said and pulled me in for a hug. “I’m so sorry I couldn’t come to see you. Lucien forbade me. He said it could delay the process.
“Can I have-have something to eat?” I croaked, my voice coming out deep as I haven’t spoken in almost a week. He nodded and lifted me up.
“I’ll go and get Lucien but first, you need a shower,” he said and carried me to the room I was given.
He left after saying he would come and get me in a few minutes. As the cold water trickled down my body, I had one huge craving. Ice cream.
I quickly got out and dressed. Maybe I could head into the city to get some after eating. As soon as I opened the door, Lucien and Rob were standing right outside.
Lucien reached forward and hugged me tightly. “I’m so proud of you, Shadow and I know that your mother is proud too,” he whispered and kissed my forehead.
“I know she is,” I replied. Somehow I felt a certain type of peace I’ve never felt in a while. This whole place didn’t feel strange anymore. I feel connected to the very walks of this place.
“I told the kitchen ladies to prepare something delicious for you,” Rob said in a soothing voice as we started walking towards the kitchen.
“Cleopatra?” Lucien called and I stopped. He had never called me Cleopatra since I got here. It’s always Shadow.
“Yes?” I answered, meeting his eyes. His expressions darkened, as if he was weighing something in his mind. When he spoke, his voice was low, almost hesitant.
“There’s something I need to warn you about,” he said. His eyes flickering with a strange intensity.
I crossed my arms, feeling a twinge of apprehension. “What now?”
He took a step closer, his voice barely a whisper. “This power you’ve awakened is far more dangerous than you realize. You must learn to control it at all times,” he said.
Is that it? I thought there was something more serious.
“One more thing. Never let anyone outside of these walls see your hair, especially the Night Wolf Alpha,” he said and started walking away.
“Why?” I asked after his retreating form. “And, you don’t have to be worried about the monster who killed my father. He’s dead.”
He stopped walking but his back was still turned. “Because if they see it, Shadow… they’ll know that your mother’s death was just the beginning. And the Night Wolf Alpha is not dead.”
My brow furrowed in confusion. “What are you talking about?”
But he just disappeared into the shadows, leaving my questions unanswered.
The beginning of what?
