New Phase 12
At the Headquarters
Mr. Arthur Bailey was not in the mood for work that day for his attention was on getting to the bottom of his son’s issues. So, he had asked Denise to continue with his duties for that day.
(Ding)
While he was waiting for Dr. Quain’s arrival, he got a message alert on his phone. When he checked, he discovered that it was from his wife. He gave a dry smile as he punched on the message.
(Hello Hubby. How is your day going? Mine is going on fine. I wish to let you know that I am missing you. See after work.)
Now, it came to his mind that he would be with the doctors for his treat at lunch when he was supposed to pick her up, then, he quickly sent his message.
(I miss you too, love. I am proposing that we have lunch together today. How about that?)
Nichole smiled broadly and replied immediately.
(Wow! That is all right by me. Thank you, Hubby.)
(You are welcome. Dr. Harper and Dr. Quain will join us.)
(It is all right.)
The arrangement seemed good to him. It would make Dr. Steve Harper to believe that he arranged the lunch to officially introduce his wife to him. Then he called on Mrs. Felix.
“Hello, Mr. Bailey. How may I help you?”
“I am expecting Dr. Quain and I would like you to book a table for four in lunch in any good restaurant.”
“Consider it done, boss.”
When she ended the conversation with Mr. Bailey, she inquired from her staff members who were mostly the young and outgoing types of any good restaurant, and they gladly recommended Harriet’s restaurant. Then, she booked for a table for four guests as her boss directed and forwarded the details of her booking to him. While Mr. Arthur Bailey was going through the message, Dr. Kadon Quain walked in. He welcomed him warmly without the slightest idea that the news that the doctor would give to him would rob him of his appetite for the lunch.
“Good morning once again, Chairman.”
The chairman stood up from his swivel chair and gave him a handshake before he said.
“Good morning. Please, take your seat.”
“Thank you.”
“I hope your trip was not stressful?”
“Not at all, boss.”
“It is all right. Do you care for a cup of coffee or tea?”
Mr. Arthur Bailey asked as he attempted to get off his chair.
“Tea would be fine.”
He walked to the pantry, got two cups of tea and announced.
“You can come over to the couch, doctor.”
“It is all right.”
The doctor said as he stood up from the visitor’s seat and joined him. They chatted over other issues as they sip their tea and carefully avoided the dicey subject which had brought Dr. Kadon Quain to Dover. Then, to the doctor’s consternation, his Chairman looked into his eyes and broached the subject he thought that he had succeeded in covering up.
“Tell me Kadon, does my son’s case have any connection with the call you got at the registry that made your phone to fall off your hand?”
The befuddled Dr. Kadon Quain dropped the tea cup that he just lifted from the saucer back and looked at the Chairman with guilt written all over his face.
“Accept my apologies, boss. I never knew it would escalate to this point.”
Now, the doctor was relieved when Mr. Arthur Bailey smiled and continued.
“It is all right. I believed you did that in the best interest of all of us.”
“You are right, boss.”
“So, back to my question, do you know the girl? Can we initiate a reconciliation? I am quite certain that he had learned his lessons and would treat her with respect if she ever returns.”
The doctor looked into his eyes and repeated.
“If she ever returns.”
The Chairman, who was oblivious of the angle that Dr. Quain was coming from, fell in harmony with him and continued.
“Yes, do you know the girl? We can contact her and arrange for a reconciliatory meeting for the two of them.”
“Yes, I know the girl, but I am afraid that a reconciliation may never be possible.”
“You cannot conclude, doctor. My wife and I would wade in, and she may see reason with us.”
Now, the doctor was staring into blank space before Mr. Arthur Bailey called his attention.
“Kadon, are you hiding the girl’s identity from me?”
Meanwhile, Dr. Quain had reasoned that there was no point holding back, so he looked at the Chairman and nodded his head.
“No, Chairman. I am not hiding the girl’s identity, but I wonder how you would take the identity of the girl.”
Now, the Chairman, who was becoming impatient with the suspense, blurted.
“What about the identity of the girl? Is she mysterious?”
“Yes, boss. She is mysterious.”
The Chairman leaned back in his seat and gave him a hard look before he inquired.
“Mysterious? What do you mean?”
“She is mysterious because she is already your daughter-in-law.”
At that moment, the disoriented Mr. Arthur Bailey, who could not believe that the doctor was aware of what he was talking about, furrowed his brow and demanded.
“What do you mean by my daughter-in-law?”
Anyway, the doctor was aware that such moment would arise and that was why he initiated a one-on-one discussion so that he can monitor him. So, he continued.
“My phone fell off my hand on that wedding day when he gave me a call to inform me that the bride was the girlfriend we had been looking for.”
Now, the Chairman had dropped his cup of tea and was staring at the blank space, with his mind wandering over many things. Firstly, he felt Louis’s pain and irrecoverable lose and the disunity this may bring to his family. However, as a man, who had seen it all, he braced up by breathing in and out while the doctor observed him for a possible sign of an attack and asked.
“Did you say 'we had been looking for?' Were you aware of their relationship before the wedding?”
At this point, Dr. Kadon Quain gave him a rundown of all he knew about Mr. Louis Bailey’s relationship with Olivia, leaving out the aspect of pregnancy and abortion because he was afraid that it may be too much for the Chairman to bear at the moment. Now, the Chairman, who must face the problem, took it in his stride and spoke.
