The Secret 2

“Abandoned you?”
Max and Phil asked in unison.
“Yes. Don’t underestimate any woman and don’t take her love for granted because if you do, she may turn her back against you.”
“You are right, father. So, what did you do when she abandoned you?”
Max asked. Now, Mr. Arthur Bailey did not wish to remember that experience anymore, so he quickly responded.
“Lunch is ready. Let us move to the table.”
They laughed and chatted at the table while they ate. After the lunch, Mr. Bailey spoke.
“Phil. Max. Come with me to my study.”
“All right father.”
They looked at each other for a clue, but known of them had any, but they followed him to the study quietly. The last time Phil accompanied him to his study was on the wedding day, when they discovered that Louis was missing. Now, they got to the study and took their seats. Max and Phil looked at their father-in-law and noticed that there must be something bothering him.
“I am glad that you are in the country, Max. I sent for you, Phil because I needed to talk to the two of you.”
Now, he paused and looked at their faces and carried on. He narrated all he knew about his sons and Olivia and Phil, who witnessed what happened on the day of the marriage, exclaimed.
“Oh! My God. It must have been too tough for him to handle.”
“It is so sad. But Louis is not a careless person. How did his girlfriend end up as Denise wife?”
Max Winston asked. Then, Mr. Bailey informed.
“From what I heard from Denise today when I tried to poke him about his wife, Louis ill-treated her.”
“How?”
Max asked again.
“Denise said he met her half dead due to the ill-treatment her first lover gave to her.”
“This is serious. That means, Denise is bitter with her first lover.”
Phil pointed out.
“And he may deal ruthlessly with the person who hurt the woman he loved.”
Max ascertained. Then Mr. Bailey hinted them on Denise’s stand. How he said that the person was not worthy of his attention and that such people ought to be in the prison.
“I know that Denise would not allow that, even if the person is not related to him. Anyway, is mom aware of this?”
“Yes, Max. But we should not let her know more than she can contain. You got it?”
They nodded in the affirmative. Then Phil asked.
“What did Louis do to hurt an innocent girl like Angel?”
“It baffles me, too. My worries are the suicide thought and the memory erasure surgery.”
Mr. Bailey pointed out.
“Don’t let that trouble you. We will handle it. I will accompany Max to Sevenoaks tomorrow, and we will see Louis and Dr. Quain.”
Phil declared.
“Yes, Phil is right. Since Louis admitted that it was his fault, he had to take responsibilities.”
“Thank you for your inputs. I am counting on you.”
“You are welcome, father.”
They walked back to the sitting room and Phil announced his departure.
“I will be on my way, father.”
“It is all right, Phil. Thank you for your time.”
Mr. Arthur Bailey responded as he attempted to get up. Max got up too, and they began to walk with him to the door. They stopped at the verandah while Phil walked to his car.
“Don’t mention, father. I will pick you in the morning, Max.”
“I got it. See you then.”
They watched him drive off, and they returned to the sitting room.
At the Government Hospital
Now, the committee could not conclude their sitting, but they have heard enough from the complainant and the accused to move further in their investigation. Then, the leader spoke.
“We will have to adjourn this meeting for now. We will get back to you soon.”
Mrs. Nichole Bailey thanked the members of the committee and left with her shoulders raised high, but Lorene Walker who stayed back gave her an angry look before she exited the Board Room. To Lorene’s ignorance, the committee members saw the angry look and made their conclusions. Then, they turned to Lorene Walker and gave her a questioning look, then she smiled and spoke.
“Thank you all for a good job. You see, Mrs. Nichole Bailey is frustrated because she got married to an ugly duckling after the man she loved used her and jilted her. If you don’t dismiss her from the hospital, she will keep venting her disappointment on other members of staff. As you can see, she is frustrated and none of us is safe.”
To her surprise, no member of the committee refuted her claim, and she concluded that she had made a good point.
“I will take my leave.”
She announced cheerfully before she walked out. Now, the members of the committee reasoned together.
“What do you think we should do?”
The leader demanded.
“I think we should meet with Dr. Caesar and brief him on the state of things.”
“You are right. Presently, the two parties’ claims are confusing. How can someone in Cairo on Tuesday attack a staff in Dover?”
“The complainant is not blind that she could not identify her assailant.”
“You are right. We will get to the root of this. Let us meet with Dr. Caesar.”
Nevertheless, Mrs. Nichole Bailey returned to her office and continued with her work, while Lorene Walker checked Evelyn Whyte’s office for the umpteenth time. That critical moment was the time she needed her most, but to her surprise, she was not there. Then she returned to her office and continued with her work.
“Hello, Nichole. Good to see you.”
Nichole looked up to see who could barge into her office without knocking.
“Wow! Zoey. Good to see you. How was your day?”
“My day was good, and yours?”
“Fine. Please, take your seat.”
“Take my seat? Did you check the time?”
“Oh! It is time. I will be on my way.”
She gathered her stuff and walked to the car park with Zoey.
“I checked on you and Rachael said you were at the Board Room.”
“Yes. Lorene reported me to the management. She said I beat her up.”
“What? Is she that insensible?”
