At The Clinic
Mr. Louis Bailey, who knew that his solution was not the best but had to no choice, was already in tears before he revealed his idea to the doctor.
“I wish to go for a memory erasure surgery. I believe it will go a long way.”
Dr. Kadon Quain, who knew that he had not moved pass his loss, smiled broadly and encouraged him with a glib response.
“That is good. As a matter of fact, your solution is the best. But which segment of your memory do you wish to erase? Your family, job or me?”
Now, Louis became speechless. The doctor, who had expected such a dangerous trick from him long ago and decided to get close to him, took advantage of the moment.
“It is not a big deal. When are you ready for the surgery?”
“Two weeks from now.”
“That is good. It will give me enough time to get professionals ready.”
“Okay, doctor. I will be on my way.”
Mr. Louis Bailey said, as he stood up to leave, but the doctor stopped him.
“I thought we had a deal?”
The startled Mr. Louis Bailey sat back innocently on his seat and inquired.
“I can’t remember, please remind me.”
“You can’t leave like this because you are going to embarrass yourself before your staff again.”
“Oh!”
He exclaimed and rested his head on the visitor’s seat and allowed his tears to flow freely. The doctor pulled out one serviette from the pack on his desk and handed it over to him. He looked at him as he cleaned his face. Then he asked.
“May I advise that you close for the day, Mr. Bailey? You can work from home.”
He looked at the doctor with the longing of a lost child who craves his mother’s affection. He fixed his gaze at him and watched him resume another round of cry. Then he inquired.
“Who will I meet at home other than a lonely house void of Olivia?”
“Yes, but it is better than your office. Remember, by two weeks, everything will be over.”
Dr. Kadon Quain’s words gave him some hope and his face brightened.
“It is okay by me, doctor. I will close for the day.”
He accepted and tried to get up from his seat. The doctor stood up too, picked his car keys and announced.
“I am coming with you. I will drive you home.”
Even at a moment like this, the fastidious Louis was able to gather his senses together and inquired.
“What about my car? How will I come to work tomorrow?”
The doctor ignored him and headed for the door, and he followed. Soon, they were at the car port. Mr. Louis Bailey who was talented in doing only what he wished to do ignored the doctor too. He walked to his car, opened the door and got in. Dr. Kadon Quain had no choice but to walk to his car and joined him, and he drove off. The doctor looked at him as they drove silently and mumbled.
“Last born, you can’t be angry with them for too long.”
Incidentally, Mr. Louis Bailey heard him and laughed heartily. The doctor laughed too as they moved on. Now, they were at the house.
“Welcome, back, boss.”
“Thank you, Fred. Please make lunch ready as quickly as possible.”
“All right boss.”
The doctor settled down on the couch, as well as Louis, who sat opposite him in the sitting room and became busy with his phone. He gave Mr. Louis Bailey the impression that he was attempting to contact the surgeons. He looked away from his phone and looked at Louis and asked
“Mr. Bailey, did you say two weeks from today?”
With a gleam in his eyes, he nodded in agreement. The doctor concentrated on his phone once again. Then, Mr. Louis Bailey’s phone rang. He looked at his phone which he had dropped on the armrest of the chair and his face beamed. He picked the call and cast a glance at the doctor, who steadied his gaze at him before he spoke.
“Hello, father. Good to hear from you.”
The doctor shifted his gaze away from him and concentrated on his phone.
“Hello son. You are livelier today.”
“Really?”
“Yes. Are you in the office or out for lunch?”
“No. Father. I am not in the office. I am having lunch at home with Dr. Quain.”
“At home? By this time of the day? Hurry and return to work. Your presence matters a lot there.”
“All right father. How is mom?”
“Your mom is fine. I am calling on her behalf. She had been worried about you, as though you are a little child who was about to walk into danger. Speak with her.”
However, Mr. Arthur Bailey’s statement touched the bones of Mr. Louis Bailey who showed worry and the doctor noticed it. Now, he heard his mother’s voice.
“Hello, mom. Good to hear from you.”
“Louis, how are you?”
“I’m fine, mom and you?”
“I am fine. How is your work going?”
“My work is going on well, mom.”
“It is all right. I can’t wait to see you when we return.”
“Oh! Mom. I can’t wait to see you, too.”
“Okay, speak with your father.”
“Okay, son. Your mom and I will be glad if you pick us from the airport on Sunday.”
“All right father. I will do that.”
“That is good. See you later.”
(Cut)
Mr. Louis Bailey looked at his phone and looked at the doctor, who was sitting calmly on the chair. Then the chef announced.
“The lunch is ready, boss.”
“It is all right.”
The dispirited Louis responded before he called the doctor’s attention to the meal with an emotional voice.
“Doctor, can we move over to the dining table?”
“Thank you.”
Dr. Kadon Quain said as he stood up at once and began to walk to the dining table while Mr. Louis Bailey observed him.
‘Did he inform my parents of our discussion? I just informed him of our discussion and we hadbeen together since then. He had not made any call since then.’
He mulled over. Now, the doctor was already seated on the dining chair and patiently waiting for him. When he delayed, he broke his reverie by drawing his attention.
“I am waiting, Mr. Bailey.”
Louis jolted from his engrossment and stood up.
“Thank you for your understanding, doctor.”
“It is all right.”
Now, they were seated at the dining table and began to eat silently. The doctor, who noticed his crankiness, broke the silence.
“I want to call my driver to come and pick me.”
“There won’t be any need for that.”
He responded without looking up from his meal. Dr. Kadon Quain gave him a surprised look and asked.
“Why do you say so?”
“We are returning to the after the meal.”
The doctor did not bother to ask for his reasons, he simply accepted.
“It is all right.”
“I will be fine. Thank you for your company.”
Soon they were through with their meal, and they left for the office. Now, Louis, who had cheered up and lively, was controlling the situation. He parked at the hospital vestibule and gave the doctor a hearty smile and assured.
“Cross my heart, I will not embarrass myself.”
The doctor returned the smile and responded before he alighted from the car.
“I believed you. See you later.”
He got off the car and Louis drove to his office.
“Welcome back, doctor.”
His secretary greeted.
“Thank you. Any message for me?”
“No. Doctor.”
“Thank you.”
He walked to his office and took his seat. He ran his hand on his head before he rested on the headrest of his seat.
“This is serious! The chairman had to be aware of this.”
Dr. Kadon Quain, who had no option, concluded. He sent a message to the chairman at once.
(Hello, boss. I am not trying to interrupt your honeymoon, but we need to talk, and it is urgent. It is for your ears only. Dr. Quain.)
At Cairo – Egypt
After they got off call with Louis, they settled down and began to watch the television. They had made the couch where Louis sat on the day he was crying their resting couch. Nichole, who was resting on his laps, slept off after a few minutes. Then, his phone beeped.
(Ding)
He glanced at his phone which was on the armrest of the couch and saw a message. He picked it and punched on the message and read through. Then, he became distraught at once because he could not place his thought on anything that could be urgent that the doctor would wish to discuss with him apart from someone’s health. He replied forthwith.
(Give me a moment.)
Then, he looked at his wife who was sleeping on his laps and looked back at the message. He thought for a while and decided to take her to the bedroom. He tapped her and watched her open her eyes, then he instructed.
